I am currently looking at buying a yarn advent calendar from an indie dyer, and one of the bases they are offering is 50% Baby Alpage 25%Linen 25% Silk. Has any one worked with that composition ? What do you think of it ? Is it warm or cool ?
The dyer in "The Camel's yarn" from the UK - by the way. I have never buy anything from her, so if you have feedback, it would be appreciated too
looking for prefererably off the shelf or easy to order yarn color suggestions to crochet a blanket. Thanks!
I saw this knit Samantha Pleet Maille dress on Pinterest and wanted to try my hand at reconstructing it. The shape and stitch pattern seem simple enough (just a bell sleeve dress with alternating sections of stockinette and garter), but I’m a bit stuck on yarn choice.
The product page describes the yarn used as “teal color woven with metallic lurex strands with a luxurious and soft yarn made from viscose and silk”. I’m much more concerned about weight and color than I am about material. The closest I’ve found to the blue toned silver is hobbii’s metallico fine but sport weight seems like it might be a bit too heavy (not to mention being discontinued). If anyone has experience with knitting with metallic or shiny yarns, I’d love their input.
I’m wanting to make a sweater that calls for a dk weight yarn. DROPS karisma is so cheap but is it itchy? Should I go DROPS Lima instead? Is there another you like more than either of those?
then on the same topic how should I group them together should I put them together based on material, colour, texture, ply or something else
Crocheted a beautiful simple lemon peel stitch blanket and blocked by washing and spinning delicately in front loader. Then laid out to dry. As expected with super wash the row depth increased about 25% and the stitch width only about 5%. This was quite helpful as I felt the blanket was getting a bit heavy. (Used 4 skeins total) First time using non acrylic fora baby blanket. Now my question is- will the blanket continue to grow for the end user as they wash and dry it? And has anyone ever embellished a blanket such as this with some type of surface embroider or patch? Previously I’ve added a crocheted animal to my acrylic blankets but fear it may not work with this SW type yarn.
So, recently I was given some yarn from a friend whose grandmother passed away (RIP). I got three huge trash bags worth, and I was so absolutely hyped about it! One downside was that the yarn was older and had a weird smell (due to storage and what not). I read online that you could use delicates bags (lingerie bags) or nylons to wash and dry your yarn to prevent tangling. Sounds easy enough. Sent it through the wash and they came out fine, but when I opened my dryer I was welcomed to this monstrosity… never in my life have I felt so lied to and betrayed. On the bright side, the yarn smells great now.
I asked for advice and the general consensus is, everyone loves the hell out of Stanwood! I'm probably gonna buy the large (yes, I sometimes deal with hanks that weigh more than 4oz). So, that means buying their large winder which is pretty pricey. I plan to shell out lots of money for a swift and winder because I only want to have to buy once. So, items being expensive isn't going to hinder me. I want to know if anyone has used their large winder. If I'm going to spend lots of money, I want to make sure it's good before doing so.
Hello. I started knitting about eight years ago, after I had a child. It's just a hobby. But everything I've knitted was created for sale. I've been selling my items for about five or six years now through various sources, but only a few of the large selection have sold. I also displayed my pieces on various art shelves in my city. The result was zero. The prices on all my items are reasonable. I didn't set exorbitant prices.
Now I realize that all these items take up quite a bit of space. And I need to put them somewhere. Giving them away would be a shame, too. I spent time and money on yarn on them. Maybe I'm selling them on the wrong sites? For example, on Avito, no one has ever shown interest. And in my city, handcrafted items are not valued...
And what do you do with your knitted items that you haven't been able to sell for years?
We’re heading to Napa this week. I know I can Google it but wondering if there are yarn stores you guys love and recommend.
I run a small yarn shop and ended up leaning pretty heavily into consignment, but not really for the usual reason.
What I was actually looking for was some kind of proper space for yarn resale. There’s a lot of good yarn just sitting in people’s stashes or getting passed around in random destash groups, and it always felt a bit scattered.
So I started bringing that into the shop alongside regular inventory.
In theory it made sense to me: less waste, access to yarn you can’t always find anymore, more of a range in price.
In reality… I’m not totally sure how it comes across. Some of it moves, some of it really doesn’t, and I can’t tell if it feels curated or just kind of all over the place.
I’ve also been using “heirloom” as a general direction, but I’m starting to question if that even lands when things are coming from a mix of sources.
Curious how this reads from the outside:
\- does a resale/consignment setup feel interesting at all, or just messy?
\- would you ever buy destash yarn from a shop vs directly from someone?
\- what would make you trust it?
Trying to figure out if this is something worth refining or if I’m just overcomplicating things.
Just came to say that Purl Soho has again exceeded my expectations not only in their service and quality of their yarns but I love the little mini yarn skeins they include with their orders. The pouf yarn is a dream and when I needed to order more in the same lot they went out of their way to get it to me. Their communication is great as well. This is truly a case of premium yarns with premium service. Disappointed there is not a store front that I can visit to see and feel yarns and colors and staff in one place. 🙂
I am about to start making an overlay mosaic baby blanket for a newborn and t's important to me that it meets certain requirements like Okeo-Tex certification, washable and dryable, soft, etc. I have zeroed in on two particular brands, Stylecraft Special DK and Paintbox DX but neither is sold in any retail stores in the US, at least as far as I can tell. Before I order online, I'm wondering if any fellow crocheters have any experience with these yarns and their quality and what your opinions are?
Just bought some yarn from Hobbii and after seems like forever got the package into the mail. Can’t wait to try crocheting some shawls with these beautiful colors 😍
I bought 4 different colors of this yarn to make a scarf for a friend going to college in England at the end of summer. never bought yarn online aside from Michael's and I've also never bought from hobbii before. I didn't know it would be this small. I spent 30$ on 4 of these.
I'm wanting to make those sailor slippers I've seen going around, but am not sure if I have the right kind of yarn. The pattern says "yarn suitable for felting", but I have zero idea what that means. I've only ever worked with synthetic yarns and some cotton. Never wool.
Must have: Time for this one-time venture, a large vehicle, good reputation, willingness to cooperatively collaborate
Details:
If you are willing to be boots on the ground for me, I am willing to share info with you the so we can both benefit and split the reaped rewards of collaboration.
I've got information on a fantastic, seldom occuring - possibly once in a lifetime, opportunity to grab a substantial trove of new yarns. The catch is someone has to be there in person, and due to disabilities I won't be able to make it in time for the event.
If you are in the area, or can be tomorrow, active in and known within the reddit fiber arts or wider communities to have good reputation, and have access to a *large capacity* vehicle (SUV, van, truck, trailer) and please message to discuss.
Timing is important so I'm trying to find someone today.
