TW: Poodle Strokes

Hey all, I have a 3 year old poodle that gets seizures from time to time. I’m a first time poodle owner and after every episode I take him to the vet; the doctor says it’s normal for that breed. He’s a happy boy and there’s nothing weird in his behavior before he has them. Is it normal for the breed? Should I change vets?

Ps. Im sorry if this is a dumb post, im just very scared and I dont know anyone else that has poodles.

A recent community post was talking about this highly recommended veterinarian practice and so many people were commenting about how the practice isn't accepting new patients.

I am welcoming a 9 week spoo next week and need to find a veterinary and figure eh, why not call to confirm. This was our conversation:

"I heard you guys are not accepting anyone new but I figured I would call to establish care for a new dog I'm getting next week."

"...."Well...that depends. What dog do you have?"

"She's a standard poodle."

"Oh, we love poodles here. Happy to have establish care with you. The owner herself has several standard poodles. Let me get some dates for you."

This cracked me up. Do some vets turn people away based on the dogs they have? Felt like I was trying to get a doctor appointment and told them I had a gold PPO 🤣

The purpose of this post is to rant /gather some tips.
I have a five month old poodle I got four weeks ago and so far it’s been tiring and chaotic.
My wife has a huge phobia from dogs and I was quite surprised when she was the one that suggested we get a dog after several failed attempts of getting a Cat. I agreed immediately and I watched her go through the process of getting this poodle without putting any type of input, scared she might change your mind at any second. At first the poodle was very quiet didn’t do much. I was always sleeping, but that changed quickly and now it’s very demanding it doesn’t listen, it’s untrainable, It takes a very long time to learn easy commands and through all of this my wife is still dealing with her phobia and is not able to help much with the training and the potty cleaning and the walking efforts.
I work two jobs and coming home to this feels like a third. It’s just too much sometimes and I don’t feel like I like it or I love it even though I’m a huge dog fan and I used to have three dogs in the past of which was a golden retriever that was way easier than this poodle to handle but I really want to make this happen I I just don’t know how and I know some people don’t love their dogs during the first couple of months as they are taken back by all the responsibility and the effort so I just want some type of reassurance that this phase will pass too and I will start loving it more and more because God knows I’m trying so hard, but it’s just too much.

Edit: Getting on* my nerves.

Lost my boy of thirteen years yesterday

I lost my boy of thirteen years yesterday and it hurts so badly. I got up this morning just wanting to see him and realizing his crate is now empty. He was my only constant for thirteen years and there when my bichon died. I don't have any now and for the first time in twenty years I really do feel alone.

Struggling

Hello everyone I feel like I’m constantly posting in here but I’m in the struggle bus with my 17 week old pup. 😅
He’s honestly been very trying and I have a trainer coming over on Monday.
He has been barking/ lunging at every single person he sees while on walks/ going potty. It has been insane and to the point where he gets so overstimulated he jumps up and just starts biting me, ripping my clothes etc. if they come way too close he tries to run away with his tail tucked. When we are out and about he doesn’t seem to mind people. I feel like I tried socializing correctly since we got him asap and he still is ending up fearful?
I live in a townhouse and there’s people constantly walking past us on walks so I don’t know how to prevent him from seeing someone. He’s 28 lbs so everyone sees him as this big dog & asks me if he’s going to bite them. It’s tiring to explain that he’s just scared and if they can back up.

Hairstyle Suggestions?

Hi spoodle friends! Growing my girl's topknot out and I'm looking for cute reccommendations for how to style it at this length to keep it out of her eyes. I have 2 little clips in above her eyes but the side floof is still encroaching into her eye area.

I have mini claw clips, 90s style butterfly clips, and oodles of colorful mini rubber bands. She tolerates things in her hair pretty well.

Any recommendations that look cute and help her to see clearly?

Eleanor and I thank you! 🥰

I’m getting an AKC Standard Poodle on Monday. He’s a cream boy named Todd.

I’m considering Pets Best insurance for $29 a month with a $1000 deductible and 90% coverage to start.

My question, since I’ve never had pet insurance is…. Is it really worth it? They’ll cover chronic issues, but they increase premiums annually. So if he comes down with a chronic issue they could just increase my premium to cover that amount?

Let me know if that’s not how it works, because then I think it would be worth getting maybe.

The reason I’m considering it:

We lost our German Sheperd in April of last year after a major scare at 6 years old. He had a tumor the size of a softball on the outside of his rib, and it was double the size on the inside per our vet. He said he couldn’t operate and instead we gave him pain meds…. He had a miraculous recovery, did a complete 180, the mass went away? He was normal overnight. Then a couple years later had a seizure on a Saturday, another seizure the night so we brought him in for the cluster. Then within a month the medicine couldn’t stop it. He ended up passing at 8 after seizures from a brain tumor. My regret is, would money have mattered if he had pet insurance or could I have gone to specialists and paid $20,000 for a surgery I’d only pay $2,000 of?

Explanation please

I was hoping to attach a video, but I can’t.
I have a 5 year old male partí and my mom has a 6 year old male partí.

My mom’s dog AGGRESSIVELY humps my dog and he has been doing it for years. Dog junk out and everything.
I have video of my dog getting out of the hold and my mom’s dog continues to air hump. My dog never returns the behavior, but he also doesn’t act like it annoys him. My dog just has bad hips and I think another 65lb animal gripping his hips and thrusting into them as well as pushing them down is an issue.

Any way I can stop the behavior? It’s super weird and I have never seen any other dog do this. Also, my mom’s dog only does it to my dog, nobody else. He does do this to his goat toy.
Could this be a response to overstimulation? Prolonged play? Even as I write this my mom’s dog is trying to get at his butt and my Poo is hiding and resting under a table.

My sweet boy is 12 weeks old. And he absolutely refuses to be potty trained. I give him treats every time he goes outside, we get lots of play of course. And he still goes inside of the house. I don’t know what to do. This is week 2 of potty training him and still he’s not getting it. Please help me!

I heard some people say to get a bell so I’m trying that next!

My sister got a Spoo but very obviously didn’t think it through. They basically have no time for him due to work (only spend 2-3 days at home) and have tried having him at daycare the other days but obviously it’s getting expensive and they feel bad for the poor guy. Top it off they have a toddler and pup has knocked him over a few times. They’ve admitted they made a mistake and are now looking to re-home. Pup is currently ~9 months old.

We’ve had him for the last few days at our place and are thinking we might want to adopt him. He’s so adorable and such a good boy with a bit of TLC he’s already picking up some commands. I’ve grown up with dogs my whole life and he seems to be attaching to us well. We also have a toddler.

We currently live with a small yard (4x6m) in an area where parks and walking isn’t the best. We’re moving to our place at the end of the year and the yard is a bit bigger (4x8 maybe) and there’s a lot better walking / park life there. I am thinking he’d be an outside dog but am open to an indoor.

Edit: after the initial feedback if we do adopt we’ll be keeping him indoors. We were just doing what they’ve been doing for now - I’m only just starting my research into what a Spoo would be like so apologies for the ignorance.

With a toddler I’m already seeing some of the issues like not being able to let her go roam free in the yard to play unless we lock the dog up, the yard being dirty (I’d have to do clean up probably morning and night). As my little one gets older she’ll also be able to keep him busy I’m just concerned for the next year or so because he’s already quite tall and she’s only 1.5yrs.

Someone is always home at our place so he should be fine on the anxiety side. He’s been chilling the last few days just watching us and having a good play every few hours with a walk each afternoon.

Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Anything we should know or consider?

Hi All - posting on behalf of a standard poodle currently in my care. I kindly ask that comments remain respectful and constructive.

He’s unfortunately lost his home due to his strong prey drive. He is a beautiful silver beige and would be a great fit in the right environment.

If you or someone you know might be a good fit, feel free to message me. Thank you for keeping this a supportive space. I’ve already contacted Picket Fence Poodles as well.

Any Red flags I should look out for when visiting a spoo for adoption?

Hello everyone! I will be visiting a breeder that has decided to rehome her b/w parti spoo. It’s seems the dog has been bred already but is now fixed. I have owned poodles in the past growing up and am very familiar with their maintenance and breed characteristics. However I would like some consultation from the poodle experts!

I am a little bit hesitant about the dog (despite being in love with it) because it was used for breeding. The breeder says the dog is AKC registered but it appears to be a breeding program she is running out of her home. A very small scale operation. Plus the dog is a parti which I personally don’t mind, but I’ve heard negative comments from others that parti poodles are poorly bred / backyard bred more frequently.

As far as being a b/w parti is there any genetic concerns I should be aware of that I might need to address/ start preventative measures for such that I do adopt her?

Also when I visit this dog, does anyone have any red flags I should look out for physically as far as health and genetic indicators?

I am already aware of swaying hips and funky sitting posture as a hip displays indicator.

Also is there any red flags / risks I should be aware of regarding it being previously bred.

Thank you in advance!

How long do blades last? Or what am I doing wrong?

UPDATE: Thanks for helping a newbie out!

What destroys blades?

We have our first poodle (11 months) and are trying to groom at home. For his body, we are using Andis ultraEdge 7FC. A new blade works so well, but by the second clip it is useless.
How long should it last?

New Poodle Owner Help

I’m a new dog owner and really want to make sure I’m setting my puppy up for success, so I’d love some advice from more experienced people.

We recently brought home a 5-month-old standard poodle a week ago, and I already care about him a lot and want to be a great dog mom. I just want to make sure I’m reading him correctly and not missing anything important.

A little about our situation:

- I work 7–4 (I’ve been doing a midday check-in)

- I have two young kids (1 and 5), so I’m trying to balance calm structure for him with family life

So far:

- He’s pretty quiet and observant, and spend 80% of his out of crate time in the doorway/entryway of the home

- He doesn’t seek out any interaction with us. He's okay if we approach him but he's not coming to us.

- Not playful, but seems to be slowly getting more comfortable

- Some whining when left alone, but it’s already improving a bit

- Had a few accidents after not going outside seems to be holding it

- Gave a low growl once or twice (like at the vet window) and when approached early one morning, but didn’t escalate

-Breeders said he knew basic commands but he literally runs in his crate as soon as I say sit and not like he's confused sit and crate. Just like no I don't wanna do that.

What I’d love guidance on:

- Does this sound like a normal adjustment/decompression period for a puppy this age?

- For more cautious/observant dogs, when did you start to see more bonding and playfulness?

- Any tips for building confidence without overwhelming him?

I really want to give him a stable, happy home and help him grow into a confident family dog, so I appreciate any advice or experiences you can share!

Today, my girl and I were traumatized by the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard in my life. I grew up in the south, so I thought I’d heard the worst….but this was off the charts loud. And because it really wasn’t that cloudy and rain was not even in the forecast..plus it rarely even happens in my part of the country, it made it even more unexpected and everyone in the park was completely shocked and rattled. For a split second I thought we were being bombed.

We immediately left because it happened a few more times and then we were seeing lightning. Besides the fact that she wasn’t gonna want to stay in that park any longer anyway, even if it stopped.

She settled on the drive home…but later I was telling the story to a family member and every time I said the word “scary”, she would look around and put her tail between her legs like she was expecting something bad to happen. I don’t even think she’s ever heard that word that many times either and I certainly didn’t think she understood what it meant. But clearly, she was able to put that together based on what happened and a couple of conversations I had about it within that same hour.

Having a dog, this intelligent can be a double-edged sword! This is now a word I’ll need to carefully use around her or perhaps avoid.😅

My wife and I don't know what to do. Our 15-year-old chocolate girl, Coco, is becoming incontinent. She is fine through the day, but it has become routine to find messes (urine and/or feces) in the morning when we wake up.

She is a good girl, but is it time?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice from other Standard Poodle owners who may have dealt with a very strong prey drive.

I rescued my girl about 4 months ago. I found her on the streets — she was extremely skinny, matted, and sick. Since then she has recovered beautifully and at home she is an absolute sweetheart: gentle, affectionate, calm, and very bonded to me.

My plan was to bring her to good health and find a good home for her, but now I am having second thoughts..

However, outside on walks (especially at night), it’s a completely different story.

She has an intense reaction to cats and hedgehogs. If she sees a cat or even senses a hedgehog nearby, she completely loses focus, starts pulling very hard, and I can’t get her attention back. Before I understood how serious this was, she managed to kill 5 hedgehogs within seconds. Since then, I only walk her on a strict leash at night and I’m constantly on alert.

She also digs a lot, which I think is related to the same hunting instinct.

I want to be a responsible owner and help her manage this behavior, but I honestly don’t know where to start. I don’t want to punish her for instincts she probably developed while surviving on the streets, but I need to be able to control her and keep other animals safe.

She is around 4 years old.

Has anyone dealt with this in a Standard Poodle?

How did you train impulse control and reduce prey drive reactions?

Is this something that can realistically be improved with training?

Any advice, training methods, or personal experiences would mean a lot.

Thank you!

Hey everyone. I have a 9 month of standard poodle puppy. His breath is pretty smelly and almost has a fishy smell. I’m doing everything right for oral hygiene as far as I can tell. I brush his teeth nightly with enzyme toothpaste, use plaque off food topper, water additives, and give him purina dental chews and bully sticks. His vet looked at his teeth about a month ago and lectured me about needing to brush his teeth bc they’re already quite stained… but I hadn’t told them I already do that and then some. It looks like his teeth are quite crowded when I compare to our other large breed mixed dog who’s never had her teeth brushed and only uses chews and has perfect teeth, confirmed by the vet! So I’m a bit lost and not sure what else I can do. Any suggestions??
