Finally went to Mental Health after years of avoiding it

I’ve debated posting this for a while, but I know there are probably other people sitting on the fence about going to mental health because they’re worried about their career, clearance, reputation, etc.

I’m still active duty, and after years of keeping things bottled up, I finally went and got evaluated. A lot of what I was dealing with came from some experiences during my military career involving death, high stress operational situations, and events that stuck with me a lot longer than I ever admitted to myself.

For years I just convinced myself I was fine and kept moving. Meanwhile I was dealing with nightmares, hypervigilance in public, emotional numbness, constantly being on alert, being extremely jumpy/startled, poor sleep, and just generally never being able to fully relax.

I was honest during the evaluation. I even disclosed past suicidal ideation from years ago that I had literally never told another person about. That was honestly one of the hardest parts.

End result?

I got connected with a therapist, got evaluated for PTSD, started treatment, and got put on medication that has already started helping with some of the symptoms. Most importantly, I finally feel like I’m actually addressing things instead of just suppressing them and pretending I’m good.

Career-wise: no loss of clearance, no negative impact to my job, no commander involvement, no “career ending” outcome, and still deployable and still doing my job

Now, I want to be realistic and not sell people a fantasy either. There ARE situations where mental health conditions can affect your career depending on severity, reliability, safety concerns, inability to perform duties, etc. But I think a lot of us build it up in our heads like simply walking into mental health automatically destroys your career, and that just wasn’t my experience at all.

Honestly, I regret waiting so long.

If you’re struggling, at least go talk to someone. Keeping everything buried for years is not a flex, and eventually it catches up to you one way or another.

Patches

Switching from Army to space force, will I be able to keep my airborne, air assault and other similar patches (or tabs) on if I reenlist into space force? Also, does the space force wear hot weather ocp or just regular ocps. Ty in advance. Searched up on web and it was bland, used chat gpt and it was front but gpt can lie often times more than I like. You guys are the experts. Muchos gracias space scientists and cyber guardians of the west.

Weekly Newbie Thread - Post questions about joining the Space Force or what a job is like here & here only - week of May 11

Post all your questions about BMT/OTS/Academy/ROTC/etc here!

Previous newbie threads. Please browse and search before posting.

Please search before asking your questions.

Some quick answers:

  • Yes, the Space Force is real. No, it's not Starfleet. No, you can't become a space pilot yet. No, there are no aliens. No, we would not tell you if there were aliens.
  • We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different.
  • Drug use other than non-habitual marijuana usage is immediately and permanently disqualifying. If you've tried cocaine, heroine, ecstasy, LSD, or any other drug even once, you are disqualified and there is no possibility of a waiver.
  • No, we don't know what jobs are available at any given time, or your chances of getting said job, or how long it will take for you to get the job, or how long it'll take for you to get to basic training or OTS.

Do not tell anyone to lie about drug use, medical history, or anything else. You will be banned.

Cyber SRB?

Hello my fellow cyber warriors, looks like SRB will probably be coming back(probably). While many of you wanted to probably get out or are on the fence, what multiplier would it take for you to stay in?

My personal guess is it's gonna be a 5, what are my fellow cyber guardians guesses on what it will end up being?

Weighing my options tryna do cyber

Hey what’s up, I just finished MEPS and I’m thinking about switching over to the Air Force for cyber. I was originally planning on going Marines. I did pretty well on the ASVAB, but I feel like I completely bombed the cyber test and I can’t really find solid info online about what scores are actually needed for Space Force cyber jobs.(I got a 65) I’m planning on talking to a recruiter sometime this week, but I wanted to hear from people who are already in cyber or currently enlisted in the Air Force.

AFAS $150 Fuel Grant

Air and Space Forces Aid Society (AFAS) is offering a one-time $150 fuel grant to E1-E6 to help offset fuel costs. I'm not affiliated with AFAS, just sharing it for our Airmen and Guardians who may benefit from this grant.

EDIT: I also want to consider joining the AirForce officer program. The same questions below apply, along with these. How competitive is the OTS for airforce/getting into an engineering officer role with the airforce? Especially considering my current stats.

I know this is an Airforce sub but I didn't see a Space Force equivalent, and was hoping I'd find some help here. I'm currently job hunting (graduated in Dec 2025, it's been rough...), and my family wants me to consider becoming an Engineer Officer in the Space Force. I have some idea of what OTS is but I'd like to learn more:

  1. What is the application process like?

  2. What does the actual OTS program entail as far as structure, rigor, expectations, length, so on.

  3. How seamless is the transition from OTS into an Officer role, especially as a Mech or Electrical Engineer?

  4. How long is 1 assignment? I've heard 5 yrs total, I've seen others say 3-4yrs. But I'm not sure if maybe this changes depending on military branch.

My background: I recently graduated with my Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering (3.03 GPA). I'm a little worried that if I DO decide to pursue this route of career, my GPA would hold me back. I'm fairly athletic (I can run a mile. I used to run cross-country and train calisthetics so I know how to get back to better fitness again). I am also a woman.

My SAPR/EO case at Los Angeles AFB was severely mishandled. I was turned away from the SAPR office and it took EO over a year to complete my paperwork.

I tried advocating for training and process improvement. I submitted concerns to the base CC, filed an IG complaint, and met directly with SAPR and EO leadership.

From some personnel changes and the SAPR/EO/IG stand down yesterday, it’s disheartening to surmise that the issues remain.

If you’re comfortable privately messaging me, I’d love to hear your story and make sure your concerns are included in my coordination with congressional members.

Above all else, I’m here for you…and I’m sorry the system failed you too. You deserve better.

Hey Reddit Guardians!

I’m Aaron Brynildson, former JAG at Combat Forces Command and the National Space Defense Center. I left active-duty last summer to start teaching space law at the University of Mississippi.

I’m one of the main instructors for a new online Master’s program in air and space law. The degree is perfect for Guardians and can be done fully online and asynchronously. We have courses on government contracts, American space law, international space law, drone law, AI, cybersecurity, etc.

If you want to learn more about the degree, check out our website: https://www.online.olemiss.edu/ms-air-and-space-law-degree/

Also, feel free to email me directly: ambrynil@olemiss.edu

USSF MTI experience

I have been at my current unit since I IST’d and have not been selected on the GAT.

With the need for GTLs and MTIs, I considered going DSD. I have an interest in DSD and not just to get out of my unit.

I am not seeing much information on the workload, experience, and expectations of being an MTI, especially how USSF BMT is for MTIs.

Looking to hear from USSF MTIs from the past year. How are the hours? Are you pushing flights constantly? Any advice etc.

For context, I’m already working with a recruiter (USAF) who also recruits for the Space Force. He told me that “all the jobs in the Space Force require a top secret clearance.” I don’t believe that to be true, to the best of my knowledge. For more context, I’m a dual citizen and I am not going to renounce my motherland citizenship.

Sew on your ranks onto your tactical/patrol caps.

5.1.10 Officers will wear sewn-on Space Blue grade insignia (Exception: second lieutenant
and majors will wear spice brown) on OCP background. (T-1)
