youtu.be2-day no-budget psychological horror short | seeking honest cinematography feedback
Just released my first psychological horror short film, El Callaniños (The Husher), a 2-day no-budget production shot with friends/family (amateurs), and I’d love some cinematography feedback from people more experienced than me.
A lot worked better than I expected, but I also learned a huge amount from the mistakes.
Things I liked:
- The atmosphere in the grandmother/young Glenda sequence
- Some of the silhouette and shade/shadow towards the end
- Production design was fantastic considering budget limitations
Things I struggled with:
- Framing consistency - some shots feel very intentional, others feel more “coverage” as we simply ran out of time.
- Our gels weren’t really working properly, especially in some of the night interiors, meaning we couldn’t light some scenes internally the way we planned, so we ended up relying heavily on exterior key light through windows.
- For the morning scenes, there were inevitable delays, the sun came out and completely changed the room exposure/spill. I definitely learnt the hard way that east-facing rooms are dangerous when shooting over long periods. I'm not a fan of the light in these scenes (frankly they do look flat) but I think production design and costume design saves the scene a bit.
- Some close-ups ended up flatter/more digital-looking than I intended
Would love brutally honest cinematography feedback, especially:
- what feels strongest visually
- what breaks immersion
- where the lighting starts feeling amateur
- whether the visual language feels cohesive or inconsistent
Thanks You!!!

I made a short film about an Asian teen hustling people on LA courts by leaning into stereotypes - it just dropped on Omeleto
Growing up outside Atlanta, basketball was everything to me. But no matter how much I loved the game, I could always feel people sizing up my Asian face - assuming I was good at math, bad at sports.
So I made a film about it. It's a 10-minute comedy about three teens in LA who hustle people on the basketball court by leaning into stereotypes. Think "White Men Can't Jump" but with an Asian lead.
It officially dropped on Omeleto today. As an indie creator, the first 24 hours matter a lot! If you have 10 minutes, it would mean the world - likes and comments help a ton too.

April Come She Will (Director's Cut) - A Short Film by LEO HAVERTY
In September 2020, during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic, a boy takes his final walk whilst reminiscing about the last few disastrous months of his life.
Officially Selected by the Fresh International Film Festival in 2026.
Read the final draft here:
Why I made this:
April Come She Will was of course, inspired by the amazing, wondrous song by Simon and Garfunkel. Before coming across the song, I had wanted to make a short film that was set during covid times to try and create a raw, poignant depiction of how life was like during the long gruelling and agonizing process of lockdown, where we could not visit our friends or family. We were confined in our homes like it was prison.
My style of choice:
With a 1.66:1 aspect ratio and a compressed mono soundtrack (of course you'll hear it in stereo), the look was mainly inspired by the 2023 film "The Holdovers" which used film emulation to achieve the look of a film that was filmed in the early 1970s. I also took in a warm, but bland color grade, with some grain and gateweave to create the film look. An aesthetic that has a very special place in my heart.
How did I make it?:
After the script was written over a couple of months (not counting those 2 week long breaks), I woke up one day just before 5 am to shoot the walking scene all the way to the ending, to capture the empty roads to achieve the depiction of lockdown.
I shot the rest of the film roughly 1-2 weeks later, all on a Panasonic HC-VX1 and an aluminum tripod.
No one aided me in this process. I shot, edited, wrote, starred and directed the entirety of this short film.
It took some trial and error, but I am happy how it turned out in the end.
Original Release: 19th June 2025
Director's Cut: 15th May 2026
