Why I made this:
April Come She Will was of course, inspired by the amazing, wondrous song by Simon and Garfunkel. Before coming across the song, I had wanted to make a short film that was set during covid times to try and create a raw, poignant depiction of how life was like during the long gruelling and agonizing process of lockdown, where we could not visit our friends or family. We were confined in our homes like it was prison.
My style of choice:
With a 1.66:1 aspect ratio and a compressed mono soundtrack (of course you'll hear it in stereo), the look was mainly inspired by the 2023 film "The Holdovers" which used film emulation to achieve the look of a film that was filmed in the early 1970s. I also took in a warm, but bland color grade, with some grain and gateweave to create the film look. An aesthetic that has a very special place in my heart.
How did I make it?:
After the script was written over a couple of months (not counting those 2 week long breaks), I woke up one day just before 5 am to shoot the walking scene all the way to the ending, to capture the empty roads to achieve the depiction of lockdown.
I shot the rest of the film roughly 1-2 weeks later, all on a Panasonic HC-VX1 and an aluminum tripod.
No one aided me in this process. I shot, edited, wrote, starred and directed the entirety of this short film.
It took some trial and error, but I am happy how it turned out in the end.
