Kansas health officials monitoring 3 people with 'high-risk exposure' to hantavirus

https://www.kmbc.com/article/kansas-health-officials-monitor-hantavirus-exposure/71284440

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is monitoring three people who were exposed to a person who later tested positive for hantavirus.

The three people were not on board the cruise ship, health officials say. They are not currently experiencing symptoms.

Health officials say the three people were exposed internationally after contact with an individual who was on the MV Hondius cruise ship. That person later tested positive for the Andes hantavirus.

The health department will continue to monitor the risk. Officials say the risk to the public is "extremely low."

What’s new?

Hey y’all! I’ve been in Oregon for the last few months as I’ve recently moved, but I’m coming back to OP for three weeks. What’s changed since the end of February, and is there anything I need to look out for from 135th to 159th? Also, what new food spots would be recommended?

Anybody else see the coyote sleeping on top of a hay bale off College this morning?

Was driving down College between Antioch and Metcalf and glanced over and saw a coyote chillin’ on a hay bale around 7:30am. I had to turn around to go back and get a video. I have seen coyotes in OP, but never just hanging out on top of a lone hay bale off a busy street.

Nice place, nice people

Visiting for work.

The city is spacious, green, and clean.

The people are so nice, too. Thank you to the guy that helped me lift my suitcase unprompted. Thank you to the woman that signaled for me to get on the escalator first. And big thank you to the guy and his daughter that saw me sitting on the curb and asked if I was okay. When I said I was waiting for an Uber he said I could sit on the porch if I wanted.

Also, Brass Onion and Jack Stacks were tasty.

Thank you for the warm welcome, OP.

Looking for Advice on Reliable Daily Drivers Around $5k

Hey everyone, I’m looking for recommendations on reliable daily driver cars in the ~$5,000 range. Mainly looking for something dependable and decent on gas for commuting.
Are there any good dealerships in the Kansas City / Overland Park area that you’d recommend? Also open to suggestions on specific makes/models that are usually reliable in this budget. Thanks!

Considering a move to OP: which areas feel the most connected and social? How do families usually socialize?

Hello everyone,

My spouse is considering a position in a company based in OP, so our small family would be moving from abroad (we are foreigners) for our first time living in the US.

While we’ve read great things about the schools and safety, we have a little concern: isolation. We are very social people: we love grabbing coffee with neighbors, staying socially active, and actually getting to know the people on our street. We’re aware of the "suburban" reputation where people mostly stay behind closed garage doors; while we respect that lifestyle, it’s just not our vibe.

A few questions:

  • Neighborhoods with "soul": What are the best places or ways to interact with people? We’re looking for a sense of community over just a "nice house."
  • Social Apartment/Townhome Complexes: Are there any specific recommendations, we’ve looked for example at Savoy, Hunters Pointe, Louisburg Square, and Sandstone Creek.
  • The Toddler Social Scene: Where do families meet up? We’re looking for playgroups or community centers that are social for the parents too, not just "drop-off" spots.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Does anyone know what the ongoing construction project cutting off College is?

College around Corporate Woods has been closed for what seems like a year and I heard this is a “2 year project.” It’s a fairly large cut across the whole road but I’m curious what this has been for and why it’s such a long construction project. For a while between that and the I35 ramp stuff that was going on near there for so long I was having legit trouble getting over to my MIL’s house. It was quite an out of the way experience! LOL

I drive by the one near 110th and Metcalf between 10am and noon at least twice a week, and there’s always a long line of cars (like 10-15 or more), with workers taking orders from the cars in line. Meanwhile Scooter’s and other places nearby aren’t busy. What’s the deal?

Like you've known someone for two years and somehow you still only talk about schedules, kids, and surface stuff. You genuinely like them. You just never actually... get there.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm a local to OP (moved here from Washington state two years ago), and I ended up building something around this exact feeling.

I'm hosting a small event in Overland Park on May 21st. You bedazzle a pill bottle (I know, stay with me) and have a structured conversation designed to actually get past the small talk. Happy hour pricing at a local bar. 16 spots only.

It's a little ridiculous. That's exactly the point.

Drop a comment if you want the link or have thoughts on why it's so hard to actually connect with people we already like. I really want to help women connect. It's rough out there.

I just moved to a house in the neighborhood and I am buying patio furniture for the first time. Someone warned me that squirrels might chew the outdoor furniture— especially plastic, polywood, wood, or outdoor cushions. Have you found that to be true in this part of the country? Maybe aluminum would be a better material lol

Edit: from the comment so far it sounds like there are definitely some squirrel issues. What have people done to mitigate it? Throwing a tarp over the furniture, metal furniture, etc?

My husband and I have been renting in South OP for the past 7 years. Our lease is up at the end of year and we’re finally ready to purchase our first home.

We would greatly appreciate any recommendations for Kansas realtors/real estate agents, particularly anyone who works with a lot of first time homebuyers.

TIA!
