Free resources we’re underutilizing

I recently found out about several free resources I’ve not been utilizing. First, my public library has Kanopy access, which is a free movie streaming service—it’s like Netflix but using your library card. Next, you can get free kids books every month using Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This last one’s only sort of a freebie, but if you already have Spotify, you also get 15 free hours of audiobook listening time per month. I totally did not realize that was a thing I could’ve been taking advantage of.

Anyone else have any similar freebies that people don’t take advantage of enough?

I really wish they’d use Grace Kuhlenschmidt more…

I always love the segments she’s in and I feel like they don’t use her enough! The one she did about Mexico City a few months back was a work of art. Do you guys think she’ll get promoted to one of the man hosts ever?

Is it normal to get asked to volunteer in industry?

My husband and I are both PhDs—I’m in academia and he recently started an industry job. One thing I didn’t expect is that he gets asked to volunteer/participate in unpaid stuff all the time, like science fairs, company team-building events, company sporting events etc.

I really thought the ass-kissing extracurricular stuff ended after PhD/postdoc….tired of him feeling obligated to do work related stuff on weeknights and weekends. Is this normal for industry or just his company?

Toddler parents: do you do stuff on weeknights?

I have a question for my fellow toddler parents! How often do you have plans on weekdays?

My husband and I were having a discussion, and essentially he feels like we need to have more regularly scheduled plans with friends on weekdays. He’s feeling disappointed and a bit socially isolated without making weekday plans with friends, but it seems like so many people are too busy. I’m of the camp that it’s unrealistic for us to make any regular plans at this stage of life (we have a 3 year old and a baby). People are so tired by the time bedtime hits… what do you do?

Rentback regret

We closed on our first house like a month ago and I thought it would be no big deal to do a rentback…..wrong 😂

Longest. Wait. Of. My. Life. Move out of my house already! It’s so anticlimactic buying a house you can’t live in yet. Someday….

Recommendation request: documentaries that make you say wtf

I love watching documentaries, but specifically weird ones that leave you saying wtf over and over again. A couple of documentaries that have scratched that itch are MerPeople (about people who dress up as mermaids professionally), Grizzly Man (a guy who lived with bears until one of them killed him), and Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey (about polygamy and Warren Jeffs). I want to feel like I’m questioning everything and in a semi-state of shock the whole documentary. Any ideas?

Parents who don’t supervise ‘big kids’ out in public

I have toddlers and get so frustrated when parents of older children let their ‘big kids’ trample the little kids out in public. I’ve had so many experiences where a group of kids are playing nicely at a park or a kids museum, and then the arrival of one or two horrible, unsupervised 8 year olds will ruin it for everyone. They’ll be screaming at the top of their lungs and sprinting around with 0 spacial awareness and will trample any smaller child in sight….and the parent will be totally unaware or just not care. They are absolutely old enough to learn how to share a space nicely with others and take turns.

Bonus points if it’s a space designed especially for toddlers that gets invaded by older kids.
