How do you find authentic experiences where you travel?

I’m really struggling with this thought in my mind. When I travel I find the informations about the route online or asking to some friend, but the problem is: I don’t have friends everywhere, and I trust less and less internet and ai. So what to do?? Which tools you use normally?

Has anyone used private flights after repeated airline cancellations?

After dealing with multiple airline cancellations, Has anyone ever wondered whether private charter flights ever make sense for important trips where delays can ruin everything.

Has anyone here done that occasionally instead of regularly?

If you had 1 month in SEA at age 25, where would you go?

Hi everyone!

Me and 2 friends (all 25M) are planning a 1 month trip to Southeast Asia in November–December 2026. Right now the only thing we’re pretty set on is flying into Bangkok but after that, the itinerary is basically in faith's hands (and reddit's).

We’d love some genuine, down-to-earth recommendations for places worth visiting or things worth trying. Could be everything from a beautiful place full of history and culture to us bringing flowers to your grandma you haven’t had the time to visit her in years.

We’re mainly looking for a mix of good food, beautiful scenery, interesting people and some partying here and there.

Isot kiitokset teilli! (kiitos means thanks)

Travel options South America vs Vietnam

This is my last big summer before working full time. I have 3 weeks off then 2 weeks then 10 days with commitments in between. I’ve been looking at South America as a trip with g adventures Peru and Bolivia or a trip to Vietnam and then Hong Kong as a stopover for a few days. Which would you recommend as a solo traveller but with g adventures. I have done g adventure tours before

passport paperwork is somehow more exhausting than planning the actual trip

i can organize 3 weeks of travel into one backpack but somehow passport renewal paperwork completely drains me mentally. i started filling out DS-82 on the government site twice already and both times i got distracted halfway through because i was also handling work stuff. then when i came back later i couldn't remember if i already answered something correctly. also fwiw matte passport photos worked way better for me than glossy ones after my first set got rejected. curious if people here just handle everything directly through the gov site or use prep/checking services first.

Late July Trip from the East Coast U.S.

Hey all - I know plane tickets are growing in price…but I am a teacher who always travels in the summer. I normally like to enjoy food, culture, drink, I also enjoy nature as well.

I am struggling to figure out a location for late July this year. Asia would be cool, but the flight seems so daunting 🫩.

I’ve been to
Egypt
Peru
Mexico
Costa Rica
Ireland
Iceland
Turkey
Virgin Island
Netherlands
Belgium
Azores (Portugal)

HELP!

I know people usually say, “just do whatever you feel like,” but I’m more interested in hearing what people actually end up doing when they travel alone.

I’m going on my first solo trip soon. One city is mostly planned out, but the second destination is still pretty open, I mainly just want to explore, walk around, maybe do a few outdoor activities and enjoy the views.

I guess I’m worried that if I don’t keep myself busy the whole time, I’ll feel like I wasted the trip. How do you normally figure out what’s worth doing in a new place? Do you have certain activities or little traditions you try to do everywhere you go?

Feels like most people have gone fully digital, but I’m not sure it’s always foolproof.

Where digital can fail you:

  • Booking gets changed and you miss the update

  • No signal when you need to pull up details

  • Phone dies mid-journey

  • App glitches or logs you out

  • You need to quickly show proof without scrolling around

Reasons people skip printing:

  • Easier to manage everything on one device

  • Less clutter while traveling

  • Quick access through airline apps

  • Environment and convenience factors

What do you usually do?

  • Print full itinerary and bookings

  • Keep a mix of digital plus screenshots

  • Trust only apps and emails

  • No backup at all

Feels like one of those things you don’t think about until it goes wrong.

Anyone had a close call or learned this the hard way?

This might be a small thing, but I’m trying to boo͏k a short trip and getting stuck on the hotel part.

Every time I start looking, I end up with a bunch of tabs open and the same place showing different prices depending on where I check. It’s hard to tell what the actual rate even is.

I keep seeing mixed advice about using an online travel agent vs just comparing boo͏king sites. I’ve been flipping between a few (Super. com, Booking, etc.) and it’s just making it more confusing. At this point I just want to book something without overthinking it or feeling like I missed a better option. What’s been less hassle for you when it comes to this? Plz help me out in this !

Hi everyone,

This will be my first trip to Japan and honestly I'm quite confused about how to plan everything.

I'm traveling with my girlfriend, so I also have full responsibility for the trip. Right now I don't have proper planning for accommodation, places to visit, activities, or even food streets.

I'm thinking maybe the best option is to hire a local tour guide or some kind of organized setup that can handle everything and give clear instructions, so we can just explore Japan without stress or overthinking.

If anyone here has done Japan like this or has experience traveling in a simple, stress-free way, I'd really appreciate your honest advice.

Travel scams are one of those things people think they’ll obviously never fall for… until they actually travel and realize how sneaky this stuff gets.

And honestly, most of these scams do not even look like scams at first. They look like a helpful taxi driver, a friendly local, a BETTER DEAL, or someone just trying to save you time. That is exactly why they work.

Tourists are usually tired, excited, in a hurry, and not fully familiar with the place. That is basically the perfect setup for getting played.

So yeah, if you are planning a trip anytime soon, this is the kind of stuff worth knowing before you land somewhere and start trusting random people a little too fast.

# Scam What Happens Solution
1 Fake Taxi Overcharge / long route Use official apps (Uber/Careem)
2 Broken Meter Taxi Meter not working Agree price before ride
3 Local Guide Scam Fake official guide, wrong info, overpricing Book via trusted platforms like GetYourGuide (verified guides + real reviews)
4 Fake Airport Pickup Fake driver holding your name Match plate + booking details
5 Fake Hotel Website Payment gone, no booking Use trusted booking sites
6 Airbnb Scam Fake listing/photos Check reviews carefully
7 Rental Deposit Scam Pay upfront → vanish Never pay outside platform
8 Fake Travel Agency Cheap package fraud Google reviews first
9 Fake Visa Agent Fake docs / delays Use embassy only
10 Cheap Tour Trap Unreal deal → bad experience Compare prices
11 Attraction Closed Scam Redirect to shops/tours Check Google Maps
12 Fake Tickets Denied entry Buy official tickets
13 Skip-the-line Scam Fake fast entry Use official counters
14 Pickpocket Teams Distraction theft Keep valuables hidden
15 Bracelet Scam Free → forced payment Say NO clearly
16 Petition Scam Fake charity Ignore strangers
17 Fake Police Fake fine demand Ask for ID
18 ATM Helper Steals PIN Never accept help
19 ATM Skimming Card cloned Use bank ATMs
20 Currency Exchange Scam Bad rates Use official exchange
21 Fake Currency Counterfeit cash Check notes
22 Restaurant Scam Hidden charges Check menu first
23 No Price Menu Overbilling Ask price upfront
24 Bar Scam Huge bill trap Avoid random invites
25 Drink Spiking Theft risk Watch your drink
26 Friendly Local Scam Leads you into traps Stay cautious
27 Free Photo Scam Charge after click Agree price first
28 Photographer Scam Low-quality/fake Use verified vendors
29 Souvenir Scam Cheap item overpriced Compare shops
30 Street Game Scam Rigged game Don’t play
31 Taxi-Shop Scam Forced shopping stops Set route clearly
32 Fake WiFi Data theft Use VPN
33 SIM Card Scam Overpriced SIM Buy official store
34 Luggage Distraction Theft Stay alert
35 Porter Scam Force tip Say no firmly
36 QR Code Scam Malware link Don’t scan random
37 Fake Parking Ticket Fake fine Verify online
38 Toll SMS Scam Fake payment link Ignore unknown SMS
39 Car Rental Damage False charges Take photos before
40 Fuel Scam Overcharge Watch meter
41 Cruise Scam Fake booking Use official sites
42 Travel Insurance Scam Fake policy Buy from known brands
43 Loyalty Points Scam Account hack Enable 2FA
44 Event Ticket Scam Fake passes Buy official
45 Transport Ticket Scam Invalid tickets Buy at station
46 Fake Reviews Misleading ratings Check Reddit + Google
47 Fake Customer Support Steals payment info Use official contacts
48 Free Vacation Scam Hidden fees Nothing is free
49 Timeshare Scam Upfront fee fraud Avoid pressure deals
50 Recovery Scam We recover your money Never trust recovery agents

So what’s the actual pattern here?

If you look closely… almost every scam above is doing one of these:

  • Making you rush
  • Making you trust too quickly
  • Making you feel like you’re getting a DEAL
  • Or just catching you off guard

That’s it. Nothing fancy.

Most of the time it’s not even about TRICKING you…
it’s about putting you in a situation where you don’t think properly for 10–20 seconds

…and that’s enough.

Have you ever had a moment while traveling where later you thought:

Wait… that felt kinda sketchy

Or worse… actually got scammed?

I’m planning my first trip around Southeast Asia sometime later this year and I’m having a hard time deciding where to start. I’ve been looking at Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia, but each one looks amazing for different reasons.

I’m mostly into good food, friendly locals, nature, beaches, city life, and places that are still affordable for travelers. I also enjoy slow travel more than rushing between places. Safety and easy transportation matter too since I’ll probably be traveling solo for part of the trip.

For people who have already traveled around Southeast Asia, which country gave you the best overall experience and why? I’d also love to hear any unexpected favorites or places that completely surprised you.

Basic travel planner / trip researcher? TLDR at the bottom

I’m trying to gauge if there’s any interest in having a “bare necessities” type of travel guide/trip planner. I absolutely love the researching portion of trip planning, and finding all the must do/see, places to eat and even the small quirky things.

This would not be a typical trip planner type of experience, but more of a general information about the area, a loose daily schedule and options for things to do on different days and in different locations.

I plan all of the trips for myself and my partner, as well as taking charge on family vacations. My process is typically to get a general layout of the days, and to create options for each day as opposed to a strict schedule. This allows you to get as much done as possible if that’s what you want, without stressing about having to follow a specific itinerary to the exact minute by eliminating the “what should we do now?” question.

For example I’m currently planning a PNW roadtrip, and I have broken down the days into 1. Where we’re spending the majority of the day 2. Highlights for the city/area we’re in and 3. What area we are sleeping in that night. Aside from the basic breakdown, I then have extensive lists for each city of everything that we could do if we find ourselves with extra time after doing our top priority options, as well as multiple hotel options for each stay.

TLDR : Would you hire someone to do all of your trip research/mapping/blog checking/hotel review reading/etc for you, so that the information is delivered to you in a clear concise way with or without a basic guide/schedule to follow?

I work remotely but occasionally need to travel for client meetings with very little notice.

Commercial delays have caused issues more than once, and I’m wondering if private jet rental is something people actually use strategically.

Or is it still unrealistic for most people?

I’m planning a trip to the south of France and started wondering how medical care works there.

If you suddenly feel really unwell while visiting Nice but it’s not an emergency, what do travelers usually do to see a doctor quickly?

Planning a short trip to Turkey soon, I’m considering places like Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Antalya.

Has anyone here visited these spots and what activities would you recommend in each city for a short stay? I’m also thinking about booking some tours through Viator, so I’d really like honest feedback on whether it’s worth it and if anyone has a working discount code to share,

One more thing, do you think it’s better to hire a local tour guide in Turkey or is it easy enough to explore these places on your own?

I'm planning a quick 3-4 day getaway from NYC at the end of May or early June and would love some fresh ideas. I definitely want to stay in the States.

I’ve been looking at New Mexico and Maine, but I’m open to other suggestions.
