first time back in a salon in almost 10 years, loving the results ⭐️
first time back in a professional setting since I was about 21! that’s when I discovered the ultimate life hack of cutting my hair off and just wearing wigs haha. but years later, I’ve come back to loving my natural locks :-) 💐
have a busy weekend coming up so I wanted to try a silk press! the first pictures are the “after”, I put some pictures of the “before” and “during” and even one of the curls before they fell. I actually like the relaxed look a bit better 🤠
anyways, does anyone have any advice on how to keep this style? I don’t have any pins on hand but I can get some, that and a scarf. I used a silk bonnet and put it in a loose pony as an emergency last night but I don’t think it’ll last long like that tbh. any advice is appreciated, tyia!! 💗🤩
Starting my hair journey
Just showing some love for myself here a little with my hair in all types of states. I’m trying to get it thicker but unsure how. The Bantu knots photo is from may of 2025 the stretched side part is from march 29 this year I’m not sure of progress hoping to get some feedback about potential products, pretty sure my hair is low porosity . Currently my hair is in the flat twist style ( cus I don’t want to get braids which is what I would usually get ) just trying to stop breakage and get bra strap length !!! Any tips and guidance on. Currently I wash it every week with the Jamaican black oil shampoo and I use the lco method when re twisting the style
Threading
Back to basics. I have been experiencing a lot of breakage, and have been advised to minimise heat.
I have a lot of density, so didn't expect my hair to fit into these four sections, but I do also have fine hair.
Any suggestions on other heat free stretching methods? My hair tangles a lot if unstretched.
Slow growth due to breakage and knotting- what am I doing wrong??
Context: I used to flat iron the crap out of my hair, and did a big chop to the scalp in 2020. It’s been five years, and my hair has grown, of course, but seems to have slowed the longer it gets due to breakage and fairy knotting. Every time I wash my hair, the hair that sheds gets caught in the ends and ties itself in an undoable knot, forcing me to cut it off. I’m getting pretty annoyed, and I’m not sure how to resolve this. I wear twists fairly often, and this picture is from a few weeks ago when I decided to do a blowout for a length check. What am I doing wrong?? 🥲 I only finger detangle in the shower when my hair is wet after letting it sit with conditioner for a few minutes in the steam. I work from the bottom up, but I’m still having issues. As you can see my hair is thick, but the individual strands are pretty fine. I feel like after five years my hair should be much longer than it currently is. I always use a leave in conditioner and oil my scalp with amla, and I don’t use gel unless i’m doing a wash and go. I’m getting pretty frustrated, so I would greatly appreciate some advice.
Start using blue magic again, my hair are not dry anymore !
After buying multiple bs , money spent on useless products and hair routine that was too much, i finally came back to the basics.
I bought blue magic and OMG, i finally retain hydratation after years of having dry hair and constant breaking ends 😭😭😭
Sticky natural hair
How to stop my hair from matting and sticking to eachother every time it goes wet then dry?
Any type of product I've used seemed to make it worse for me even the ones that worked with many other girls with afro hair like Knot On My Wash leave-in.
I also tried a strong clarifying shampoo and it didnt seem to work.
Its so frustrating especially that i spend too much time detangling my hair.
And detangling brushes intensely break off my hair even with slippery products on water-dripping hair. idk what to do.
I finger detangle first then detangle with a brush from bottom to top. Detangling work on my hair better when it's dry.
Camille Rose vs. Shea Moisture
I've been using Olive Oil ORS products for my hair and lately, I feel like it's not doing its job. My hair has been so dry and I've been fighting fairy knots almost every day. My hair isn't as long as I feel it should be and it's either wear it in a twa fro or finger coils. I did some research and it seems like maybe my hair can thrive with either Camille Rose or Shea Moisture. Do y'all use any of these or have you tried any of their products? Did you like or dislike? Also any recommendations on brushes/combs for detangling hair?? My wide-tooth comb isn't cutting it any more 🙏🏿
Balding
Help please I have had this bald spot for so long and nothing I do is working. Is it too late for me? What can I do to salvage it? 😞
How do professional braiders in the US afford to live?
Hey everyone! I’m a hairstylist and this is something that I’ve been curious about for a while. I don’t do braiding, but I have always wanted to learn. What’s intimidating is the pricing. I see so many professionals doing braiding full time, charging 300 or less for something that takes the entire day, meaning that’s all the money they make in a day.
While that isn’t a super small sum, you have to imagine the general rule is to assume you pocket half the cost of your service due to overhead, taxes, and other expenses for the business. So at the most expensive price, that leaves them $150 for an 8 hour service as take home money. That means that stylist makes $18.75 an hour on their most expensive day! That’s 40k a year roughly (a little less) assuming you work the normal days and only get the highest paying service every single day.
How do you live off of that? Any professional braiders please let me know, or anyone who has any insight. I live in a more expensive state so maybe that’s manageable elsewhere, but definitely not where I’m at.
EDIT: thanks for all the responses! I definitely underestimated how fast professional braiders are. I appreciate all the comments :)
How do I undo this??
So I had mini twist with extensions and took them down and I tried to get the buildup out of the part that my hair and extension were twisted together. Luckily my hair is full of these so looks like a put together fro but I have like 60 of these tendrils from every twist. I washed my hair and clarified. This isn’t the first time this has happened when I had twist extensions another time and took them out I would wash my hair every 2 weeks and was still not be able to separate the hair so that I can brush and detangle it. Mind you, it’s not locked nor has it formed dreads, it’s just unseen build up that won’t come undone, between new growth and defined curls. I think after this I’m done with extensions unless I pay someone to take them down for me I can’t do nothing with this.
shrinkage on wash day
Hi, so i recently started wearing my hair natural after locs for 4 years. Today was my first wash since last week after blow drying and the way my hair looked after combing doesn’t look right at all. Keep in mind i used a wide tooth comb and finger combed. I combed and my hair shrinks about 80% in length and it’s standing up so awkwardly and i don’t know what to do anymore. it’s looking so bad that it makes me want to cut it off even tho it took me 2 weeks to detangle my locs. I don’t know if my hair is too short or it’s how my hair naturally is but it makes me so insecure and afraid to leave the house and i don’t know what to do. My hair is 4c btw and i can’t tell if it’s because my hair is too short or what
How do people deal with humidity? My curls just give up.
I don’t understand how people with curly hair manage in humid weather.
My hair can look decent when I first style it, but the moment there’s even a little humidity outside, it expands wildly and turns into a frizzy puff. At that point, it doesn’t even resemble curls anymore.
I’ve tried leaving it alone, adding different products, and even using more products; nothing seems to hold up once I step outside. It feels like all my effort disappears in just ten minutes.
Is this something you have to accept, or is there a way to manage it? I would love to know what has worked for you all because I’m honestly tired of battling my own hair at this point.
Sienna Naturals is now using Phenoxyethanol
long time lurker, first time poster and i am outraged! sienna naturals is Black women-owned haircare brand with the promise of safe, toxic-free haircare for Black people, and they're now using phenoxyethanol in their products (dna scalp serum).
i've had issues with them before not being as transparent as they try to seem (ask me the the drama about their original curl cream bottles), so this shouldn't be as shocking as it is. but here i am, shocked!
i'm sure they looked at other Black-owned brands and said, 'well they're using it too!'. we just really can't have anything good, can we?
after being a sienna naturals loyalist for at least five years now, i'm going to have to move my money elsewhere. aside from this, what started as a lux experience, the brand lately feels kind of cheap... has anyone had good luck with innersense, specifically in terms of hydration?
How long can I leave in a style like this?
Tomorrow will be two weeks.
How do I manage my 4c hair?
Hey, I’m a teen and I’m about to start uni soon, so I’ve been trying to sort out my hair before I leave.
I live in a cold, dry climate and for a while I was making my hair back-to-back (not even tight styles, just constant styling with no breaks), and I think that’s what led to some traction alopecia. I’ve stopped doing that now and switched to wearing my natural hair more, but I honestly don’t know what works for me.
I’m also trying to grow it out to waist length. Right now, when stretched, it’s about shoulder length or a bit shorter. It's kinda thin with not much volume or density.
I’m kinda confused about everything, like how often I should be washing it, how to actually keep it moisturized, and what styles are good. Right now I wash it every 2–3 weeks, oil it, and sometimes do the LOC method, but I’m not very consistent.
I’ve tried mini twists, braids, and even crochet hair, and none of them really worked well for me. I switched to wigs for a while too, but my scalp would get irritated, so I stopped that as well.
I struggle a lot with length retention. My hair breaks when I comb it, I get a lot of fairy knots and tangles, and I have no idea how often I should be trimming or how to deal with breakage properly.
Also not sure how I’m supposed to sleep with it to keep it protected.
For context, I’ve never relaxed, dyed, or cut my hair before, so I don’t even know if it’s actually healthy and just dry, or if I’ve been doing something wrong this whole time.
Any tips on routines, moisture, detangling, trimming, protective styles, or anything else would really help 🙏
My hair frizzes up SO fast, and idk what I’m doing wrong
Okay, this might sound silly, but I’m really getting frustrated with my hair.
I have curly hair that looks fine right after I wash and style it, but then, literally within minutes, it turns into frizz. I’m not even doing anything; I could just be sitting there, and it starts puffing up!
I’ve tried switching shampoos, conditioners, and even some random leave-in products, but nothing seems to make a difference. I’m not sure if it’s the way I’m drying it or if humidity is messing everything up, or maybe it’s something else entirely.
At this point, I feel like I’m missing some basic solution. If anyone else has dealt with this issue and found something that actually helped, please share what you
