Slow growth due to breakage and knotting- what am I doing wrong??

Context: I used to flat iron the crap out of my hair, and did a big chop to the scalp in 2020. It’s been five years, and my hair has grown, of course, but seems to have slowed the longer it gets due to breakage and fairy knotting. Every time I wash my hair, the hair that sheds gets caught in the ends and ties itself in an undoable knot, forcing me to cut it off. I’m getting pretty annoyed, and I’m not sure how to resolve this. I wear twists fairly often, and this picture is from a few weeks ago when I decided to do a blowout for a length check. What am I doing wrong?? 🥲 I only finger detangle in the shower when my hair is wet after letting it sit with conditioner for a few minutes in the steam. I work from the bottom up, but I’m still having issues. As you can see my hair is thick, but the individual strands are pretty fine. I feel like after five years my hair should be much longer than it currently is. I always use a leave in conditioner and oil my scalp with amla, and I don’t use gel unless i’m doing a wash and go. I’m getting pretty frustrated, so I would greatly appreciate some advice.

day 3 and feeling unproductive

for context i used carts heavily for 6 years daily. i have taken a few tolerance breaks over the years, but not enough to make a dent. over the last year i’ve accepted that i have a problem, and that i needed to quit for good. i’ve been having this weird, subtle but irritating headache for a few days now and am praying it wil disappear. i have an important microbiology exam next wednesday and i need to study, but weirdly i have no motivation, and my brain feels totally useless. any tips for getting through this? i’ve also been sweating my ass off all day long. i’ve tried to quit before many times, but this one is kicking me. i just want the symptoms to be over, so i can be productive.
