First time owner Questions

Hello all,
I was gifted a 3rd gen Montero 3.5L 4 speed auto. I’m kindly asking for assistance as to

  1. whether I need to replace the component in photo number 2
  2. what the reservoir in photo number 1 is called and its function.
  3. Additionally the 4wd indicator on the dash sometimes the c/d orange light stays solid, any idea what that could mean?

Loving the car and want to get it to tiptop condition
Thanks in advance

Montero 2002 shuts off when on unpaved road/offroad

Hi together

For the past few weeks, I've been having a problem with my 2002 Montero: it shuts off on off-road tracks or even on regular unpaved roads. Afterwards, the A/T and battery lights come on red. I can restart the Montero normally and continue driving. However, after 5-20 minutes, it shuts off again. When starting after a "shutoff", you can accelerate, nothing happens for 2-5 seconds, but then there's a real jolt. I've already taken it to a mechanic. An error code related to the airflow sensor appeared, along with two or three error codes related to the transmission. These codes were cleared. I then started the car, drove around for about 10 minutes, had it scanned again, and the error codes were gone. A day later, I was driving off-road again, and the car shut off once more. The problem is still here.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to do. The mechanic said, it could be many things...

Image which I took suddenly after the "shut off": https://postimg.cc/DWSpQ0xw You can see the red symbols and also that the 4x2 and D sign/lights are green. So I don't know if it is a completely "shut off".

Need big help🙏

Been hunting down my dream car and the day finally came, I bought this 2nd gen for $4000 with a new engine, motor, trans, and body only at 110k miles once I bought it drove 8 hours from Utah to Cali no problems no overheating, no weird noises nothing. The last owner was super cool telling me everything that he did to the car, cosmetically needs work but mechanically is sound. Super stoked to find my dream car and I will take care of her and maker her last. If you guys have ideas on what I should do next let me know. Thank you!

Can I change the CV boot on a lightly ticking CV joint?

Hello guys I just took my Montero V43W export version 1997 for a spin at the beach I wanted to check if the 4WD was working I recently got her.

As you can tell from the video the CV joint is clicking I noticed the torn boot on the outer joint.

Can I just change the boot? Or does the clicking sound indicate that I need to change the whole joint? How can I inspect it to see if I need to change it completely?

Help with back glass

Hey everyone, I've got a '98 Pajero Exceed with a broken back glass and I'm struggling to find a replacement. I've found several 2nd gen options, but I'm not sure if they would fit mine since it's a 2.5 gen. I'd appreciate any advice y'all have, thanks.

Power door lock issue

Need help finding this part. The rear left door lock failed and no matter how I lubricate, this motor simply whines and fails to turn. No issue to pull the lock manually, the motion path is not obstructed. Cannot find this particular part number anywhere... Should I take it apart and rebuild it instead?

Recently bought a 2000 Montero Sport

The first 2 owners took very good care of it. It was garage kept in California for the first 25 years, but still driven regularly as it has 188k miles on the dash. So far, I'm very happy with it.

Hello all, I have a 1990 Mitsubishi Montero 3.0 V6 (6G72 with distributor).

I recently bought this vehicle a few months back and the previous owner told me that the vehicle had an intermittent stalling issue where the engine completely shuts off while driving.

I’ve changed the ignition coil, the ignition module, cleaned the contacts in the distributor, replaced the spark plug cables, and I’m soon to replace the thermostat (my friend said that it seems like the radiator fluid is not circulating properly). I’m still experiencing the same issue (the engine completely shuts off while driving).

I’ve read on another forum that it could be a bad ECU, but, I live in Bolivia, so getting an aftermarket replacement would be difficult (I can find factory replacements, but from what I’ve read, they all suffer from the same issue, the ECUs that is).

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this and could shed some light on what could possibly be happening.

A few other details to mention: the vehicle was equipped with a natural gas conversion kit (a common thing here in Bolivia), it also was equipped with an anti-theft system, however, it needs a relay to function properly, so for all intents and purposes the anti-theft system is disabled. Those are the two major after-market components that have been added, in addition to some LED headlights and light bars.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Recently purchased a 2006 Montero with 126k miles and I'm getting her caught up on maintenance.

So far I've fixed the rear door, replaced a second row seat, fixed the glovebox, changed the oil, front and rear diffs, transfer case. Now I'm tackling the cooling system before I move on to the timing belt and transmission filter service.

This is after about 6 gallons of flushing with distilled water and it's finally starting to lighten up. (Left to right) It looks like the coolant was probably never changed in 20 years.

I am planning to run a course of Thermocure and continue to flush but my questions are:

Should I pause the flushing and go ahead and start on the timing belt and water pump replacement then run the Thermocure through it? Or should I keep flushing with distilled water until this starts to get more clear up more?

I want to knock out the tbelt so I feel more confident about driving it with the Thermocure and continue to run the motor without worrying about the belt going.

Has anyone seen coolant this bad?

Thoughts?

So I try this climb....

https://youtu.be/T-IOUwoHye0

I have known this spot for a long time now, I have never tried it before. It's a moderate step, the camera doesn't do it justice of course.

Trick is there are quite a hole on opposite sides, and they are positioned so that Suspension needs to really work and most of the time you have the weight of the car on two wheels plus 3 supporting to balance. Sorry complicated description but that's how I imagined the situation while driving.

Additionally you have quite a high bank on the left and right side. So I look on the spot and decide that the bigger hole is on the left so I will try to approach the right so when the car will lean to the left I will not scratch the side. So I try once, I try second and so on. Later I try with the rear diff lock and then I start to slide to the right and get dangerously close to the tree. I was thinking it's because I lock the rear diff but longer I think about it is starting to seem counterintuitive.

In the end I didn't make it up.. The problem was that once you lock the rear diff you loose front wheel traction control, so the rear is pushing but the front is just spinning. That will make digging faster on the back...

Sorry for the quality of the video, it's a mix of languages and it's not that dramatic...

I think I probably could turn more left and floor it with traction control and diff open and I probably could get away from the tree but I want to play it safe. So white flag it was and winching to safety...

Pajero throttle body gasket - parts compatibility?

I'm helping my dad with his '98 3.5L V6 Pajero and we're trying to replace the throttle body gasket. Issue is: we can't figure out what (if any) Montero/US equivalent part it actually is. He bought a gasket for a '98 Montero V6 and it soooort of works, but not ideally so.

  1. The bolt holes line up, but the hole for the throttle body --> intake manifold is too small on the gasket. In some orientations there would be a gap between the gasket and the TB --> IM opening. We could trim it to open it up, yeah.

  2. The external dimensions are not the same, but there is a configuration that seems like it will work without leaving any gaps.

  3. It is not metal like the OEM one.

Anyone have any idea if there is a US-equivalent part that would work? I can't find anything when googling. Pics for comparison of the two gaskets.

Mud time > Clean time - 2006 Montero Sport

A great drive this past weekend to Aguaro-Guariquito National Park here in Venezuela.

It's still dry season but we had some rains the week before and there where some big puddles on the road that had to be taken at some speed to avoid getting stuck.

The truck still needs a good cleaning underneath so this weekend I'm gonna take her to a specialized place for an undercarriage service.

Alright, so I’m definitely new to the montero community and wasn’t honestly expecting as little information as there is on these vehicles especially when it comes to doing a factory swap. I recently acquired a 2nd Gen 95’ SR with a cracked head. My initial intention was to do a simple 3.5L swap from a 99 2.5 gen. This was nowhere near as straight froward as I expected. (Mitsubishi does Mitsubishi things!) Anyway…. I finished the swap over the last weekend, now idk if anyone out there is attempting to do a similar swap in these trucks but I wanted to at least make a post going over some of the things necessary if this is something other enthusiasts are attempting.
YOU WILL NEED:
- Custom Motor mounts
- (unless you want to spend your life in wiring hell) an early 2nd gen harness and ecu
- a 3.5L 2nd gen power steering pump and lines
- a 3.5L 2nd igniter, and coil packs
-trim the factory air box your truck came with
- a 2nd gen charge harness
- 2nd gen throttle body
- custom or adjustable throttle cable
- your will have to fabricate the exhaust between the manifold and cat
- none of the factory starters will exactly match up, so you will need to either clock your starter or slot the hole in the bellhousing

I think that’s the majority of it. But I wanted to atleast put this out there on the internet should some other fullhearty idiot believe this that swap is a good waste of money.
