Second plied skein

This is Polwarth from Fresh Lotus Designs - I can’t recall which color it was, and they don’t seem to be doing that dye anymore. If my math is right (unlikely) it’s about 185 yards of (mostly) DK, spun and plied on a twin birch drop spindle. This is my experimental yarn, where I was trying out different techniques, and I spun it over the course of a year, so I’m pretty pleased with how even it is despite everything. Can’t wait to make something with it!

How many sub-crafts are there in spinning?

Been thinking about this recently. Spinning is AT LEAST two crafts: the fibre prep and the actual spinning. I guess it would be theoretically possible to spin exclusively pre-combed top, but even then there's likely to be some compaction in storage/shipping and you'll need to re-prep.

So we've got carding, combing, blending (with a blending board, hackle, or drum carder) as sub-crafts. Does dying count? What else is there?

Ofc once you've actually made your yarn you can do pretty much anything with it, but I'm thinking about all the processes between "raw material" and "finished yarn".

Whhhhhy did they stoop to AI bs????

Super excited about my new glider spindle until I saw the business card tucked in the package 😭 Really disappointed a fellow crafter would use AI for their advertisement/info. If I were at a fibre fair, I would skip their booth

Gorgeous Merino & Silk

215g of yummy squishy goodness! I did a loose gradient. I split 3 batts into halves and then plied the singles together.
It felt like a watercolor painting of mine. Going from green grass to the sky and some clouds.

My first hank of Hog Island is like a bundle of moss!

I got this dyed roving from Holly Hill Ranch, and it's absolutely giving me serious mossy forest vibes! I'm working on spinning the second half of the roving, but I couldn't help but share the first hank now that it's washed and dried! It's going to be incorporated into a crochet hexagon shawl so I can live out my bog/forest witch dreams!

Finished a skein of sunshine ☀️

I don’t remember the exact contents of this fiber and I have no way of getting any more (I have some in other colorways, though).

But it should be merino wool, maybe with a bit of silk :)

Hand spun dyed & a lil foraged

This is my first sheep fleece. Still have 1/3 to go but am ecstatic with the yarn so far!! Pink is cochineal i think i threw a little logwood in as well, blue/purple is logwood (may have thrown a little cochineal in there LOL) and yellow is… RED CLOVER! I picked a hundred blossoms from the field because they are going to mow it for a festival in ~2 weeks. Heated for an hour and sat it overnight. The yellow on this yarn is subtle BUT i am cool dyeing store bought white wool in the rest of the tea rn and it’s BIGTIME yellow - pics to come after they’re done and rinsed we shall see. I also did an alkanet skein but the color is off white - disappointing and expensive.
Now I’m off to make a shawl!

heaven is a full batt shelf

These are some of my favourite recent creations! creating batts is so much fun - almost as much fun as spinning them!

PSA: Facebook scammer stealing photos from r/handspinning

Hopefully this is allowed. There is a profile on Facebook called the Fiber & Wheel Collective that has been called out in several groups I follow for scamming people with false sales. I looked up the profile and they have stolen multiple pictures from this group within the last few hours. Not sure what can be done except reporting and blocking, but please be careful what you post and who you buy from!

How it started, and how it’s going!

Far from perfect, but I’m pretty excited about my first yarn and the progress in just the one skein. I still need to wash and finish it, but I’m already planning on my next yarn and paying more attention to the direction of my fiber, keeping the singles lined up for plying, etc!

Drop spindle, I started this a long time ago and didn’t touch it for years so I’ve forgotten what kind of wool (it’s at least sheep!) First picture is the beginning of the skein for both the singles and the plying, second is the end of the skein.

I definitely started running into some trouble with the plying, some of my singles were losing their twist while I was plying. (I think you can even see in the first picture, some of my singles lost practically all of their twist) Do I need to overtwist my singles to prevent this? Or is it a matter of making sure I stop the twist from reaching the singles when I’m spinning it (like, holding my finger at the point of plying so the twist doesn’t travel to the singles? I hope that makes sense!)

Rate my homemade spindle on a scale from one to cursed

I often get into hobbies too quickly for me to buy the proper supplies and so I slapped together this: an 18 inch wooden dowel, an allen wrench, and a leftover nut from a piece of furniture.

Rainy days are for spinning!

It’s storming here and so I get to start a new fun spin! I have 3 eight ounce braids of this yummy Rambouillet neon rainbow fiber and I’m so excited to spin it up! I’ve steamed it and I’m going to work it straight from the braid to maximize the length of color changes, then chain ply to preserve the striping.

I’m going to spin it on my EEW 5.2. It’s on its last legs at this point (I’m saving up for a Daedalus), so send me good luck that it lasts through this spin.

Could I get advice please?

I've been handspinning for roughly a year now, and I'm starting to feel more confident, which leads me to starting to try new things! But I'd love advice on my current idea. I have the beautiful sky blue wool on the right, and an equally gorgeous dark blue/purple remnant. What I would love to do is to kind of add in touches of the dark blue while spinning the main blue. Is that a good idea? Or am I asking for trouble?

I'm going to a festival for a long weekend and want to make sure I've got plenty to keep my hands occupied! Much appreciated!

Starting a blanket with handspun, featuring two sticks I used because I don’t have needles

The horrors of a college dorm are that I left my needles at home, thinking I wouldn’t have time to knit. But now it’s finals and I’m stressed, so I decided to start a simple project with my handspun, and I hacked out two rough needles from some sticks I found outside to knit with! Here’s how it’s going.

What do you do with your handspun yarn ?

I just started spinning with a drop spindle because I find it very relaxing and I am satisfied of the mixed color I can make. I weave and knit, but I dont know how to use my handspun yarn, since i usually do only one of kind yarn…. Any idea ?

Am I gonna regret plying these together?

Idk, is it gonna look awful if I ply these together?

The roving I got was two toned so I figured I’d just work with it. It has some pretty gorgeous gradients, but idk if the striping look is gonna be too “busy” when together ? Have y’all ever made a similar yarn?

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

First attempts

Taking a drop spindle class. First plies, Im not encouraged. Be patient, right? Also current spinning on spindle, it’s thinner and maybe more consistent. I will keep practicing, but maybe some just aren’t as skilled or slower. Have you known them? Posters on here seem to be achieving better results more quickly. I know, hang in there…love everyones posts, here!

My spinning wheel will take up the yarn just fine onto the bobbin, but there is no twisting at all. What am I doing wrong?

I’m using angora wool because it’s all I have to learn on. I tied a bit to start with to some string to get it started, but even when I was doing it straight with some drop-spindled wool I started, it doesn’t twist the yarn at all.
