How did they decide who was laid off this time?

Looking at who was let go it was some of the work horses on our team. People specifically who were either really efficient or had unique skills that arnt ‘quickly’ replaced. They all showed up 3x a week as well. Anyone have any insight?

*edit: our team and our sister team lost 1/2 our people. All level 5’s and early level 6’s. All 20’s and early 30’s. Optically from our view they cut the youngest people.

Getting laid off

I am getting laid off today. I got a meeting with the name "[manager's name] staff meeting" at 1 pm and a Slack message from my director.

Is there anything I should do while I still have access to the systems?

I cashed my GM points and submitted the health attestation. Anything else?

UPDATE: I just had a "quick connect" meeting with director. There were 8 people, director, and HR person on the call. I am employed until 5/25. I will get prorated bonus, some cobra money, and severance. It took about 5 minutes. They didn't discuss the details.

I’ll post the manufactured response if I even get one…

Dear Congressman/Congresswoman,

I am writing as a concerned American worker and citizen regarding the continued workforce reductions being implemented by General Motors under the label of “restructuring.” The cuts announced in October 2025 and again on May 11, 2026, represent more than simple corporate streamlining. They reflect a troubling long-term shift of high-value American engineering and design work to overseas operations in countries such as India and Brazil.

For generations, companies like General Motors were built by skilled American workers, engineers, designers, and technical professionals whose innovation helped establish the United States as a global manufacturing leader. Today, many experienced employees are watching their positions eliminated while identical or similar roles are quietly expanded offshore at lower labor costs.

This is not merely about corporate efficiency. It is about the erosion of America’s technical workforce and the weakening of middle-class careers that once supported families and local economies across Michigan and the nation.

Equally concerning is what many employees perceive as a subtle but growing pattern of age discrimination. Long-tenured workers with decades of experience appear disproportionately impacted during these “restructuring” actions. These are individuals who possess institutional knowledge, mentorship capability, and proven technical expertise that cannot easily be replaced. Yet many feel pushed aside in favor of younger or lower-cost labor markets abroad.

Michigan taxpayers and American workers have supported the automotive industry through economic downturns, bailouts, incentives, and public investment for decades. In return, corporations receiving the benefits of operating in the United States should be held accountable for preserving and investing in American talent.

I respectfully ask that Congress investigate:

  • The extent of engineering and design offshoring by major U.S. automakers
  • Whether federal incentives and tax structures are indirectly encouraging the transfer of American technical jobs overseas
  • Potential age discrimination trends associated with large-scale restructuring efforts
  • Stronger protections and incentives for retaining high-skilled engineering and design jobs within the United States

The loss of manufacturing jobs has already deeply impacted communities across Michigan. We cannot afford to lose the engineering and technical backbone of the industry as well.

This issue affects not only current workers, but also the future of American innovation, competitiveness, and economic security.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

How can a we in S&S/corporate/tech join the UAW, or some kind of union

Tired of this fucking bullshit of not knowing if one day I’ll wake up and be out of a job to pay my bills and provide for my family because some fuck ass executive leader that makes 7 figures a year sees us a liability on a spreadsheet instead of a person

I don’t even care if we’ll make less or whatever. I just want job stability and peace of mind knowing I won’t be sent out on the streets in this awful job market on a whim.

Most clueless and incompetent leadership ever!

What has GM senior leadership done to its Design organization? it makes me sick to know Mark Reuss was a DGM in Flint many moons ago with me. He should KNOW better!!!! POS.
Sickens me the amount of stress and anxiety that they are perpetuating on good people who have given so much…

Dear GM community and employees,

I know the transition from Opel was complex, but European Ampera-e owners are feeling abandoned. While the Chevy Bolt EV thrives in the US, our European versions have been stripped of remote features and connectivity.

This isn't just about an app; it's about the long-term reputation of GM's EV ecosystem. If cars become "offline bricks" just because of a corporate sale, it sends a bad message to all future EV buyers.

We’ve started a petition asking GM to provide API access or a software workaround for the European market. We are almost at 100 signatures within hours.
We hope someone at Detroit is listening.

GM is using AI to design vehicles. Here's what that means

We've seen a few posts here about layoffs and cutbacks. What do you think about the impact of GM's use of AI in design jobs? Is there a benefit to the speed-to-market that AI offers?

From the article:

>The birth of a new General Motors Co. car still begins with a sketch. But after that, the Detroit automaker is leaning into artificial intelligence to supercharge development.

>What once took months of work to turn a concept vehicle sketch into a realistic animation now takes days, and checking aerodynamics no longer requires sculpting clay model after clay model. AI saves time, GM design leaders said, and analysts caution U.S. automakers have little time to spare as they hurry to keep up with lightning-fast production speeds in China.

>"We've found that it's coming so fast that if we don't have a shared philosophy and strategy for how to leverage AI, that we'll simply be inundated by the coming wave and be left behind," said Bryan Styles, GM's director of design innovations and technology.

I was wondering how I can get into GM. For the past 3 years I have been applying and getting rejected almost instantly. I used work as an intern before. I currently work at competitor in supply chain. One of submission has been under review for 2 months now. Any advice/tips/help?

Random voices from work phone

This is going to sound crazy.…
Three times in the last week, conversational voices suddenly come from GM issued cell phone, and quickly stop within a couple seconds.
I look over to where the voices come from, it’s always where my work phone is, and the lock screen has lit up.
I keep thinking it must be a podcast, video/voice advertisement from a web browser I left open, etc. each of the 3 times, I had none of these apps open, no Teams or Slack meetings open, or anything that would explain it. I then remember I never even use my work phone for any of these things. And they very quickly stop within seconds without me doing anything that would have stopped it.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Can’t help but feel like I am being surveilled, and they accidentally unmuted their mic 🕵️‍♀️
It’s always too quick to discern the words being spoken, but I’ve never heard anything that seemed relevant to whatever meeting/task I was involved in at the time.

My husband applied for a job with GM Motors for a Manufacturing Group Leader- Production. He had his initial interview with HR today and realized he actually submitted a resume from last year and that’s the one they got (he mentioned to submit this year’s). The HR rep liked him and said she’d forward him along to the hiring managers but there is NO relocation allowance.

This is tough considering we’re a family with 4 small children moving across the country.

My husband attended a service academy, served 4 years after (med-board), did 2 years at a gist supply company as a call-center supervisor and now has been at another car manufacturer as a production assistant (he’s turned down several promotions due to the pay not being there). Should he have applied somewhere else in GM? He is extremely intelligent. I don’t want him to short sell himself.

We also really NEED the relocation allowance to facilitate this move. At what level does that come into play? Can that be negotiated at the next interview with the Managers?

Not many details.

“General Motors Co.'s chief growth officer is leaving to "pursue a new endeavor" after about three years in marketing at the Detroit automaker. Norm de Greve announced his planned June departure in a Tuesday post on LinkedIn. "After an incredible run at GM, I will be moving on in June to pursue a new endeavor," de Greve wrote. "More on that when the time is right."
