Carnatic music is an acquired taste and rightfully so!

Today's generation has shrinking attention span and things like instagram and tiktok are to be blamed. They want music which is easily palatable and short, crisp to the point. While it is not entirely wrong, our system does not fit into that bracket neatly. I see comments like dilute carnatic music and what not. But by its very nature, it is dense and requires patience and years to master. Everyone has their own prefernces and there are other types of music suited to their needs. But changing this artform is not it. It is at the end of the day, not for everyone and it shall be that way for a long time to come.

Question : Do you know of online carnatic music teachers who are flexible with dates and timings?

Reddit really has a sub for everything! So happy to see this sub :) ive been looking for an online professor for a while, i prefer Sunday classes BUT i also travel during some months. I can't take the anxiety of someone who is not flexible and get angry when classes shift. (I've had similar experience before and it left a sour taste).

Would you have any recommendations for someone who needs a flexible schedule?

How do you feel about high pitch in female singers?

This isn't really that much the case in carnatic music, but the pitch of female singers is so high in film music, it's especially noticeable when you hear someone like Shreya Ghoshal or K.S. Chitra sing a classical song vs a film song. People seem to think that this sounds "sweet" and many people like this higher pitch sing.

Do you think these kind of voices will become popular in carnatic music, because I've talked to a few people who actually want more of this "sweet" singing in carnatic music.

Also curious why this high-pitch singing has been consistent throughout India, when I thought it was more a bollywood invention, whereas in Pakistan film/tv music, there seems to be diversity of vocal range and timbres. Even punjab, their singing is high-pitch male and female but the timbre of the voice is not so thin but rather heavy.

Suggestions on where to get a tanpura

Im located in the US, and am looking for a female tanpura. I have family in Bangalore that will be able to bring it back for me and, any suggestions on where they should buy one? I’m also interested in mini tanpuras if anyone has any suggestions, even outside Bangalore. Or if anyone is selling one in the US!

This might come out as something disrespectful or triggering but I was someone initially interested in all kinds of music, but carnatic music was forced on me, and hence I have a very love hate relationship with it.

I do enjoy many krithis and have a soft corner for some ragas but I find it hard to enjoy all of carnatic music. Primarily because I'm not very religious and I dont find any variety in the lyrics. Also most musicians I've listened to do not pronounce the lyrics well. Sometimes I've felt like its overly complicated and structured, like some krithis are oversaturated with gamakams. Interestingly I have a liking towards carnatic fusion, with rock and western music.

I'm writing this here to get your perspective as to how you enjoy carnatic music and what aspect intrigues you. Like I enjoy certain aspects but I cannot relate to it as a whole. I really want to understand where I'm missing out. I do agree that it's a very intelligent form of music, beautifully crafted, but I guess I was drawn away from it because it was forced on me? I'm not sure. Do let me know your opinions.

Edit : I also sing carnatic music and other types of music, I'm mostly into film music and fusion. I wanted to understand if understanding certain aspects better in carnatic music would improve my singing knowledge as a whole.

Carnatic music lovers - Germany

Hi, it would be great to have a group of sorts (to begin with, you can directly DM me) of Carnatic music lovers based in Germany. We can discuss songs, ragas, the technical aspects, and upcoming concerts in Germany. Suggestions more than welcome.

Hello! I have a 4 month old baby who loves to wind down with songs. His favorite song now is Harivarasanam. It calms and puts him to sleep.

I want to curate a playlist with songs similar to this. Please suggest whatever you think will work. :)

I’m excited to see the options. Thank you! :)

Hello, I’m a 25F looking for a classical Carnatic teacher who is affordable and patient. I always wanted to learn but unfortunately was caught up in my studies and things that were inevitable in life. Now that I realize there’s a passion still in me, I feel like I must learn. Do you recommend any teachers who can teach online? I’m based in Kerala, India now.

I am kind of new to the violin (I've been learning for about three years now). When I went to the shop to get my strings changed, they asked me what shruthi I play in and gave me strings based on the shruthi. They've never done that before though. My new strings have a whole bunch of ridges on them. My old strings didn't have those. What are those ridges, and what strings do people generally use for their violins?

Hi, I’m based in Kochi and planning to start a small Carnatic listening club.

Idea is simple: a weekly 90-120 minute session where we sit together and listen to Carnatic music.

It could be old masters or contemporary recordings, and just experience it together. Maybe some light discussion too after the session.

I have a comfortable space and can host around 8-10 people. It’s completely free, just a shared interest in the music.

Your knowledge of Carnatic music doesn’t matter. But please DM only if you’re genuinely passionate about listening to this form of music.

If this works well, it could even grow into something more like hosting intimate chamber concerts in the future.

If you’re interested, drop a comment or DM.

Hello, can you please help me identify the song in this YouTube video. Start: 14:52 End: 16:23

It was so nice to hear but I am unable to find it, I tried Google song search and even pasted parts of lyrics in search and AI mode, I was not able to find.

One of the comments mentions it is in Desh raag, so I thought this sub would be best place to find answer.

Here is the lyrics I could gather..

Apologies if this is not the right sub for this question . Thanks

I am still not able to understand what scale I sing.

But when I started normal pitch seemed to match with C# tanpura frequency but now that I am doing morning Kharaj Riyaz my voice seems to match more with A#.

With C#, I am not able to match with tanpura frequency, I can just feel it.

Am I doing something wrong?

My guru (ma'am) told me A# is for female. I am male btw.
