I was told by a current student that Brown is getting rid of all fridges and microwaves in dorms next year—is this true? If so, what’s the point? I struggle to see how that would benefit the school in any way.

Hi all, incoming grad student. Managed to get approved for a room with Providence Living and wanted to see if anyone has had good or bad experiences with them, especially if you’ve rented one of their rooms with a shared house.

I was about to sign the lease but saw the reviews online and am now very hesitant to. A lot of the reviews are a few years older now and wanted to see if that might still be the overarching consensus on the company and if I should keep looking.

Thank you!

Got allotted Studio S1 - Aerial at River House for 1.7k usd! Is it worth the cost ?

Hi all,

I’m an incoming PhD student at the school of engineering. I just received acceptance from River House for a studio apartment, but I couldn’t find any images of the room. Is it worth the cost? What’s included in the rent? If anyone who lives there could share some insights, it would be great! Thanks.

Where to donate food

Hi! I’m moving out soon and was wondering if there was anyplace we could donate leftover snacks from the semester to. I have a lot of food that shouldn’t go to waste!

Will be bringing a bike with me to Brown. How safe is the area (specifically Thayer St) for locking up bikes? Do you folks feel like you have to check on them regularly? Can you lock it and forget it until end of day? Thanks!

I work part-time in the sports broadcasting department and my current day job is a low paid scam. I’ve been considering trying for an admin/office job as a way to escape underemployment. My degree is in English/Communications and I know a guy who has a similar background who was able to get a pretty decent office job at another college (granted it wasn’t Ivy League).

I’d love something that would let me keep doing what i already do at Brown I just can’t keep doing this paycheck to paycheck thing.

What is Zeta Delta Xi housing like?

I'm a queer pre-frosh and usually wouldn't be interested in greek life at ALL but this fraternity in particular really caught my eye because it seems to break the codes in a very accepting way. Idk how secret any information about it might be, so I'm just asking out of curiosity. I am yet to experience sharing a dorm room with someone so I was wondering if living in a "frat house" would be a more enjoyable experience (granted I am accepted, dunno how selective it is)

Hi! This is kinda silly but I’m an incoming freshman who’s gone by a nickname my whole life that’s not exactly my legal name (think nickname Rory real name Lorelai). Like names are similar but ppl might not know that they’re talking about the same person if one calls me my nickname and the other calls me my legal name.

I’m def gonna keep my nickname for friends and stuff in college but I’m not sure if I should go by my legal name with teachers and stuff. I just feel like having 2 names could get confusing yk. It’s so easy to put a preferred name in your portal that I’m assuming profs would get that name too? Basically ig I’m asking if you put a nickname on the portal, do professors etc see that name or your legal name?

Further, is it stupid to want to go by a nickname in college/“professionally”? It’s just what I’ve gone by my whole life and it’s cuter/more memorable I feel! I also worry it would seem confusing to have ppl calling me different things. But I also don’t wanna seem unprofessional… I’m looking to go into finance/consulting in the long run and def publish research in college.

Thoughts? I’d love some insight :))

Buxton group (parties and selectivity)

Does anyone know what their parties are actually like and how hard it is to join the group? Do you need to be international?

Incoming freshman here! Let's say I move in with a guitar/ukulele/keyboard, how possible would it be for me to practice every day without annoying my roommate? I've seen some dorm tour videos and it seems like a lot of students have guitars etc but I'm wondering where/how they practice. I've heard Brown has some soundproof rooms but I don't know how accessible they are. Also, is it possible to store a relatively big instrument like a keyboard in a shared residential space? Or does it have to stay in my room?

Hi, was just wondering if prerequisites are strictly enforced at Brown? Can you just sign up for a course? How hard is it getting instructor permission to do so? What is it like signing up for graduate classes?

I'm prospective physics/mathematics major who has done quite a bit of self-studying (at the level of (around half of) Taylor's Classical Mechanics, Purcell's EM, French Vibration and Waves, and currently Munkres' Topology + V.I Arnolds Mechanics) and who has also completed the lower div math formally (linalg, ODEs, multi/vector calc, PDEs, proofs). I'm not talking about skipping any course, just taking more advanced ones alongside them.

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming graduate student at Brown, and I could really use some advice on housing.

I recently received an Auxiliary Housing offer (71-73 charlesfield st, studio, ~$1300/month). Overall, it seems like a solid and convenient option.

However, I’m also currently on the River House waitlist, which is actually my top choice. From what I’ve seen, River House is newer, has better amenities, and is closer to where I’ll be taking most of my classes.

The issue is timing and risk:

I think River House may not start moving through the waitlist until mid-May, with results possibly late May

For Auxiliary, once I sign the lease, I would lose the $500 deposit if I cancel later

So I’m trying to decide:

Take Auxiliary now (safe, guaranteed housing)

Or

Wait for River House (better fit, but uncertain timing)

Please feel free to give any suggestions!

Would really appreciate any advice, thanks so much!

Just got offered a research job here and wanted to explore my options for housing. Ideally, I’d rent a room in an apartment or house with female or co-ed peers who are working professionals or grad students. The contract is 2 years, with an option to extend for a 3rd. I’m a 28F myself coming from California.

Budget: ~$1500 for rent, ~$500 for utilities but I’m pretty flexible. I’d be bringing my car too as some of my friends who went to Brown for UG said it’s quite needed to get around. Would prefer a parking spot.

I’ll likely move in June, fly from CA to RI, and just ship my car, packing relatively light and just buying furniture and housewares secondhand.

Open to any advice! Please be kind, I’m completely new to living on the East Coast as my life, UG, and master’s have all been in California x). I have however visited my friends in NY many times (~15°F) and have camping gear so although that’s nothing like LIVING in proper winter, hopefully I can adapt haha. (Though I’m sure many will try to send warnings about the weather lol.)

Moving in and moving out when you’re from another continent already sounds like a nightmare (where would I put things like fans/laundry bins? surely can’t fly them over to my country and back) so I was wondering if there was a way to stay at Brown over the summer.

Hello everyone,

I am incoming to Brown for this fall. I wanted to know just how muhc the COA increases per year for students? Does it broadly remain the same or does it change up by quite a bit each year? I have seen that every year Brown raises their tution price, but does the fin aid scale up accordingly?

I’m an incoming freshman this fall :D I’ve always had a major passion for history and Brown’s open curriculum has been really interesting to me for getting to explore different aspects.

I would want to concentrate in the ancient world (I also plan on double majoring in classics) or maybe East Asian studies (Korean). I also want the ability to explore around in other places.

So questions

  1. What professors do you guys recommend/love?

  2. What classes were most interesting to you?

  3. While I’m planning on majoring in history/classics, I also want to explore more humanities stuff. Would it be worth it for me to take psych/philosophy/writing/etc. classes my first year? Should I wait until I’m more settled in my interests?

  4. Is there any other incoming history freshman :P

Any advice is much appreciated! Even if it’s not history-related, general advice about Brown would also be great. Thank you in advance <3
