The dream move

Can anyone recommend us neighborhoods? Our budget is $2500. We want 2 bedrooms, in-unit laundry, and a porch/yard. I'm a city girl through and through, and he's basically a farmboy. If there's a balance of that, we'd like to find it. We're in our 40s, looking for coffee shops/bookstores/thriftshops/recordstores and interesting places to walk as long as it's quiet. We need access to public transit to get to West Chester (2 days a week). We don't drink, but we do like concerts (metal/punk). I also am beauty-centric so access to nails/hair/lashes would be great. Finally, we'd be interested in being walking distance to a food market.

This is obviously a dream list! We're flexible. Just wanted to get it all out there. I appreciate your help!

Where does Germantown/East Mt. Airy Start and End?

I’ve been researching about historic Germantown and the work that the residents of Mt. Airy have done to combat redlining a few decades ago, but I cannot get a census on the boundaries. Are there any Philadelphia natives who know where Germantown stops and where East Mt. Airy begins?

Friendly’s Ice Cream

Does anyone remember all the old Friendly’s Ice Cream storefronts in Philly? I know there were at least 2 just can’t quite place where all of them were.

Just Venting, Why is Trash/Recycling Collection SO BAD

As the title says, just venting. I live in NoLibs and ever since we transitioned to 2x/week trash pick-up, the collection is awful. Its rare they actually show up for the secondary trash day, and recycling is constantly days behind, if they show up at all. This week they just completely skipped our entire street for recycling, so naturally now with the rain the whole block is covered in wet cardboard. Plus, when we submit a 311 ticket, they just mark it complete within 24 hours and then they can just wait until the next pickup date. The 2x a week schedule is an utter disaster considering our neighborhood barely got routine 1x a week pickups.

Again, just venting. Feels like a very basic part of living here like trash collection should not be something I have to stress about every week (now 2x every week).

Anyone lived at Olympic Tower Apts in West Philly?

Thinking about moving into Olympic Tower (49th & Spruce) and wanted to see if anyone has experience there.

How is management, noise, and the area? Worth the price or nah?

Any info would help.

Hi Philly! Recommend me some 1 Bedroom apartment locations please

Hey, I'm in Austin right now, but been considered some new places to explore and live in. I'm going to take a trip to Philly soon to see how I might like the area.

Right now I'm spending right around 1800 for rent, and would love to be somewhere between 1600-1800 for rent if possible for a 1 Bedroom.

If you live in a really good apartment, I'd love to hear about it and maybe do a tour when I visit

Most important things to me is

- Being near major board game/meet up style locations for things like card games/social deduction/board games.

- A good gym is extremely important

- Strong walkability, easy to get around, not too car dependent

- Preferably an apartment that isn't too loud, at least when I'm in it

50 at granite run at Media

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming resident and have been looking into housing options around Media, Pennsylvania. From what I’ve seen so far, Media seems like a safe and convenient area with easy access to groceries, parking, and a more relaxed environment compared to central Philadelphia. The commute to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital also looks manageable, which is a big plus for me.

I specifically wanted to ask about 50 at Granite Run, Eleven 33 or West end flats

If anyone has lived there or is currently staying there, I’d really appreciate your honest experience.

How is the overall living experience (management, maintenance, cleanliness)?

Any issues with pests, noise, or safety?

Is the area around the complex convenient and safe, especially coming back late from the hospital?

Would you recommend it for someone in residency?

Any insights or advice would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

What should I expect moving to Northern Liberties/Poplar?

I’ve lived in South Philly for the last three years and I just signed a lease for an apartment near 7th and Girard. Please share if you have any favorite spots or things that I should know about the area!

Recs for disconnecting and hauling away a gas stove?

Hi all,

I’m looking for recommendations for someone who can safely disconnect a gas range and haul it away. Ours needs to go ASAP, but money is pretty tight right now, so I’m hoping to find someone affordable (or even just get a sense of typical pricing so I know what to expect).

If you’ve had this done before, I’d really appreciate:

  1. Who you used (company or individual)

  2. Rough cost

  3. Anything I should know or watch out for

I'm in South Philly. Thank you so much in advance!

Realtor rec for rentals

Hello, My son is looking to move to Philly probably this October. We will be in the city end of July to look at some places and hopefully find a place for him. He is being very specific for his apartment needs. I see lots of recommendations for realtors for purchasing homes but what about rentals? Same people?

He is totally open to areas, doesn't care about living in Center City, open to West Philly, North, South, doesn't really care. We originally talked about a budget of 1K but now he is telling me, he would like to keep it closer to $800. Maybe 1K would be ok if it includes most utilities.

Don't laugh at his requirements... preferred: Studio, 300 - 400 square feet, in unit washer dryer, needs a full stove and fridge. Prefers walk in shower, loves a good patio, would really love an older, brick building with history (really?) Doesn't want to be in someone's house or have a roomate. I feel like we are looking for the impossible.

I see great things for 1K or slightly above. He shows me things I would not live in. I think a visit will really help when he sees apartments in person. He works for Home Depot and will be transferring his job there, not sure to which store yet, will depend on who has an opening at that time. No car, will be using public transportation.

Advice on buying a 2nd condo?

*2BD not 2nd, lol.

My wife and I are thinking about moving to Philly. She’s not quite sold yet but I’m trying.

We’d be looking to buy a 2 bedroom apartment.

I was thinking near the Barnes, Fitler Square, Rittenhouse, Center City.

Can people who have bought give me some tips?

I see mostly condos and some coops that blew themselves up with $2k+ monthly fees.

We’d want 2Bd/1-2Ba, < $1000 month HOA, say $400k-$600k.

We lived in Manhattan for 20 years and want a less frenetic vibe, culture, and nice people. Yes, we have visited Philly.

All thoughts welcome. I’m trying to keep her from pushing us out to Wilmington, lol. :)

Suggestions for neighborhood suitable for suburban commute

I moved here to be in the city, and ended up in Ardmore due to work. I grew up in a city and want the experience of being in Philly as a 28 year old. The issue is my office is in Wayne, 5 days a week, and my partner commutes to Horsham several times a week.

Ardmore isn’t way out, but I spend all my time commuting to the city for my hobbies and my friends.

Is there anywhere in the city “proper” (Center City, surrounding neighborhoods) where we can reasonably commute? Max 40 min. Looking for the best parts of city living: proximity to other young professionals, great eats, studios, cafes, SEPTA access, etc.

Budget isn’t the biggest concern, I’m more so concerned about time. I feel left out, but I’m not sure if I’m trading fomo for a commute that prevents me from enjoying my neighborhood.

I do not like Manayunk.

EDIT: regional rail to work is totally feasible for my commute, my partner will have to rely on the car

Still considering moving to the city and wanted to get a good feel for the evening life. What places are popping tonight? Staying in NoLibs.

Who is going to the Manayunk Food Festival?

Who is going and if you've gone before - what were some recommendations?

Last year, I missed it because I waited too late in the day to attend.

I opted to order from one the places and I never got my food because the driver couldn't get through the crowd to pick it up. They were super nice and apologized, but I'm not missing it this year.

I think I ended up trying Alessandro's

Where can I dance??

I have a real conundrum. I am 85 getting much closer to 86, but I take care of myself. I feel great and am active. My partner also takes great care of herself and loves to go to places to dance and listen to music. HOWEVER, she is not the dancer. I am. I reallly love to dance. Recently she has been taking me to the Hard Rock casino in Atllantic City to listen to the music in their lobby bar, but like most places it is not music that I can dance to. I like CCR, Bruce, Journey, etc. Because I want to dance at least once, I often lie to the band and tell them my birthday is today and could they play "Dont Stop Believing". They do and the crowd goes wild when I dance and all the young women dance with me. (This post is getting to be long.). I dont want to go back there anymore. Is there a place in Philly where I can dance and also be home by 10 pm?
