CALM Advice

I'm in grade 11 rn and I have a 39 in CALM. I never cared about the class or the assignments and now I'm at a 39 with 8 assignments missing. I always focused on all my Dash One classes, and now I'm behind in CALM and English 20-1, trying to catch up in CALM. I have a 71 in English 20-1 with 4 minor assignments missing. So, anyway, my question is: should I do the bare minimum and get to a 50 in CALM to satisfy the graduation requirement and then focus on English, or will this strategy negatively affect my chances of getting into post-secondary education? I'm planning on doing early admission to nursing with a 93 in Chem 20, 97 in Bio 20, 71 in English 20-1 (semester didn't end so I can get it up), 83 in SS 20-1 and probably use the 84 in Punjabi 20 for UOFC nursing. Also will having a 50 in the Detailed Academic Report for CALM look bad if I apply after grade 12?

UofA or Queens Engineering?

hello, I'm a BC grade 12 student trying to decide where to go for my first year.

i only have a couple days left to decide, but i'm stuck between UofA or Queens.

At alberta I'd likely do chemical or petroleum engineering just because of the opportunities there but at queens i'd likely do mechanical engineering.

the flight to/from alberta is way cheaper or quicker than queens but yeah can you guys give your opinions its very much appreciated!

Biological Science schedule

Hii, i am an upcoming biological science student and is confused between these two schedules. I am kinda skeptical about taking lectures back to back as i wanna give myself time to review the material after each class. 3-4 hours gap seems fine to me as i think i would be able to do better self study at uni than at home but i want some advice would this gap be too much.

Also are these optional classes good to take erth 375 and astr207 ?

Thanku☺️

UofA (Petroleum/Chem) vs. UofT (Chemical) Industry ties or Prestige?

I’m trying to decide between staying in Edmonton for the University of Alberta (Chemical Engineering with a Petroleum focus) or going to the University of Toronto (Chemical Engineering).

My long-term goal is to move toward the corporate/finance side of the industry, ideally management, strategy, or even owning/operating a refinery one day. I’m also interested in potentially working in the U.S. (Texas/O&G hubs) after graduating.

UofA:

Strong reputation in petroleum engineering

Direct ties to Alberta’s oil & gas industry

I already live in Edmonton — family support, housing, car

I would graduate essentially debt-free

UofT:

Globally recognized name/brand

Closer to finance/business opportunities (Toronto)

New environment and network

I know UofA is a powerhouse for petroleum and offers a very practical path into the industry, but part of me feels like I might be “wasting” the effort it took to get into UofT if I don’t go.

At the same time, graduating debt-free from UofA seems like a huge advantage, especially if I want flexibility later (MBA, moving to the U.S., etc.).

I have until May 1st to decide, but I’d like to make a decision sooner.

For people in engineering, oil & gas, or finance, which path would you take and why?

advice on where to go for uni

Im still not sure where I wanna go for uni so im posting this for advice.

I got into UofA Engineering, McGill Bioeng, and McMaster iBiomed. I’m mainly considering UofA and McGill. I have until May 1 to accept the McGill offer, atm I accepted UofA.

UofA pros:

- I’m still not 100% sure what engineering specialization I want to go into, so UofA’s common first year sounds good for me.

- I live near campus so I don’t have to pay for residence.

- lower tuition fees.

UofA cons:

- I’m mostly sure I want to go into bioeng so McGill might be better. Ik I said the common first year was a pro, but it’s actually a half pro lol.

- I’ve been wanting to study outside Alberta for years. Montreal seems so nice.

- I don’t really wanna see my current peers all the time; I want a new start in a new place as corny as that might sound.

McGill pros:

- again, I’m mostly sure I wanna specialize in bioeng.

- the three program streams seem really interesting to me.

- I like the McGill and Kyoto joint phd program in genomic medicine, so maybe it’s best to do undergrad there? I’m honestly not sure if this actually matters for admission.

- again, new city new environment

McGill cons

- About 6k more expensive per year for tuition

- would have to pay for residence (at least $825 per month)

- scary to live alone in a new province (I’m aware this contradicts me wanting to start in a new place)

ty so much!! I’d appreciate any advice.

HYRS Response Emails

Hi guys! I applied for the HYRS program last March and the anticipation is killing me. In the informative meeting they said that we could expect responses to our applications mid-late May, but I've also heard of people getting theirs earlier. For those who applied years prior, when did you get your response email?

Also, for those who got accepted, what was the interview portion like? What should we expect?

Upcoming 12th grader and I need some help !

I know this sub is for grade 12s in Alberta but I have a serious question. My grade 11 marks so far for this year were rough (left the country two times in a span of three months for emergency reasons), finished first semester off with a 77 on physics 20, 85 on math 20-1, and an 80 for english 10-1. I am currently taking social 20-1, chem 20, and bio 20 (even though I don't really need this class for my apps next year). I am thinking of applying for engineering program in UofA after i graduate and my physics and math grade are daunting me. I've heard from conversations that 70s to mid 80s barely make the cut for a competitive program like eng at UofA.

What I already did was that I am planning to retake physics 20 in summer with Vista Virtual, and I don't really know if that was a good idea. I am also planning to get rid of social 30-1 by taking it with my local summer school, also not thinking that this is a good idea too.

If you have any tips or suggestions, please leave them below! Doesn't matter if you are a current 12th grader or at uni already, any input can help! Thank you!!!

Course Drop

Hello everyone, I'm in bit of a pickle. So basically I did pretty bad in semester 1 but still got into UofC CS - I got 68 in English 30-1, 76 in Physics 30, and 95 in Math 30-1. I got accepted around 2 weeks back. Now the thing is in the beginning of the semester I registered to redo English 30-1 through Vista Virtual and Physics 30 through Golden Hills. Me being to smarty I am didn't realize the workload at the time, but during this point of the semester its really getting to me. I have Math 31, Chemistry 30 and Social 30-2 this semester. Now the thing is I've already dropped Physics, but I'm contemplating whether I should continue with English. I have a 93 in Math 31 and 87 in Chemistry 30. Meaning if I carry out these grades till the end of the semester, I would have a 83.8 average with my previous English and Physics grades. Now the problem is that I'm past the withdrawal date for English, but the teacher told me that I can walk away from the course, meaning I don't do rest of the course work nor the diploma. The catch is that it would show the attempt in my transcript, but won't have a mark. I talked to my counsellor and she said that walking away won't have an affect on the final decision regarding my English grade. The competitive listed on the website is low 80's. When I got accepted my average was 80, meaning my final average would increase by roughly 4%. Do you guys think walking away from English is the right choice or would staying in the program benefit me. I think the highest grade I would be able to achieve is ~73% after the diploma. Please let me know what you guys would do in this situation. Thank you for reading 🙏

Senioritis is getting bad - what do I do?

(I guess this is also a bit of a rant/vent) What the title says. And I mean bad bad. I’m a really good student and I usually have a good work ethic (I have 90+ in all my classes), but lately I haven’t been feeling it. For some context, I’m taking physics 30, ela 30-1 and math 31 this semester. I’m taking physics through outreach and I feel so stupid all the time. It’s been getting worse. And I’m the only person taking it so I have no one to collaborate with. For English… well it’s just not my strong suit. The CART diploma feels so daunting. I’m trying to study death of a salesman (and I will to the best of my abilities) but my old motivation is nowhere to be found. I got accepted into uofa for engineering so I feel like there’s not even a point to trying to strive for 90s in English, but at the same time my average was over 95 and god knows I’m too damn broke to not get that $6000 scholarship. So I’m stuck. I don’t see the need, but I also don’t want to get burned out. And also, my sister hasn’t been attending school and she just dropped her bio 30 class and all I can think is “damn I wish that were me” but also it’s so frustrating because I feel like I have no one around me to motivate me. And I know, it’s all about discipline but I feel like I’m genuinely getting depressed. All the sudden everything feels so overwhelming compared to previous years/the beginning of the year. And, because I’ve been such a high achiever for so long, I feel like if I fall off the wagon that my whole identity is going to be shattered. And another thing, is that maybe I’m not even meant for engineering. If I’m struggling right now, how the hell am I going to make it through engineering!?!?! But I feel like I just need to suck it up…. IM SO LOST.

And also, I’ve been trying to have more balance… I guess. I make sure to work out and go for walks and read (for leisure) and write poetry (not for homework, I just like writing it) and go to bed at a good time but I still feel like I’m going insane.

So, for anyone going through the same thing/for all the A+ students, how are you dealing with it?

How can I improve in ELA, and how hard is ELA 30-1?

Hi everyone, I am currently in grade 11 and want to go to university, but my biggest concern is my marks in English. For ELA 10-1, I ended the year with a 75 and for ELA 20-1, a 72. Ela has always been my weakest subject, and I've been working on it, but it seems like nothing is working. I attended tutorials, I have a tutor, and I'm doing my best, but I'm not sure what to do. How can I improve?

Physics 20 Help!!

I am pretty good with quizzes, I understand the concepts, and do good on assignments and labs but I get so rushed and nervous on unit tests.

Just today I had one and I was rushing in bubbling my answers and impulsively changed like 2 of my answers with no reasons right before handing i also copied down/bubbled in my values wrong for like 2 of my numeric response since I was rushing before the bell rang even though I did all the work right and got the correct answers.

Any tips on preparing for unit tests (theory questions too) and getting rid of that nervousness. + How do I work on my study habits, all I do is read the textbook lessons after but I rarely do practice questions. My grade has lowered so much bc of those habits.

I had 90s in the course but my average started dropping to low 80s

How to get better at reading comps before Grade 12 diploma exams? 🙏

I really need help improving my grades on reading comps.

One of my biggest struggles is timing. I take too long on passages and then feel rushed on the questions. Also, a lot of the answer choices feel super similar, so I end up second-guessing myself or picking the wrong one.

Sometimes the questions don’t make sense to me, or they ask about context and I don’t really know how to use context clues properly. I feel like I just need more practice, but I don’t know where to find good, challenging questions. I’ve tried some websites, but the questions aren’t that great or don’t match what I’m tested on.

I’m also trying to start preparing early for my Grade 12 diploma exams next year, so I really want to build strong skills now and actually improve.

Does anyone have tips that actually helped them? Like strategies for answering questions, managing time, or good places to practice?
