When I saw “No Retreat, No Surrender” at the movie theater in 1986, not only did I love it, but I told my friends that the Russian guy was gonna be a huge star in the future haha. Any fans here of No Retreat, No Surrender?

fun 70s and 80s genre films

So I am kind of a sucker for fun, funky, and ridiculous 70s and 80s genre films. The kind where you can smell the graffiti paint in the air as it wafts through the grit and grime of urban America. You can bob your head to the cheapest sounding synth soundtracks. Where the hero is oftentimes a deadbeat who falls for the main girl who always has a random important job and had a gallon of hairspray to compliment her leather pants and tight tiger striped shirts. Usually there is a wise cracking non white sidekick tagging along and Gangs of every variety roam the streets while idealistic rookie good cops have to prove their worth to the chain smoking old bad cop.

Things like Big Trouble in Little China, Bloodsport, Assault on Precinct 13, The Warriors, Escape from LA, maybe even Ninja Turtles or Ricky Oh, maybe something wittier like Robocop.

It can be Sci fi or action, horror or ‘maybe even splattering marital arts or fantasy, but it will always have dad jokes and explosions

Whether they are cult favorites or mainstream releases, indie films on a budget or under the radar foreign films, maybe even fantasy or what films will capture this vibe.

It can be ridiculous, but I’m not looking so much for “so bad it’s good type movies” but just movies that reek of awesomeness and kick ass

"I thought I'd lost you boy." - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

I’m not crying, it's just dust from a Nazi tank going over a cliff....

It's such a great scene. The emotional crescendo to Indy and Henry's complicated dynamic wrapped up in drama and comedy, delivered by two masters of the craft.

Wolfgang Petersen’s movie “Das Boot”, is widely regarded as a masterpiece of war cinema, offering an intensely claustrophobic and authentic look at a German U-boat crew during WWII. It’s an incredibly bleak and profoundly sad movie. If you haven’t seen it, look for it. It’s definitely worth a watch…

Now rewatching - Highlander. 1986. "From the dawn of time we came; moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering; when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you... until now."

I've seen this movie at least on average twice a year since I rented the VHS during 1987.

I am Gen Z, from Hong Kong, and Lea Thompson in 1985 was not a joke

I know it sounds crazy and one of a kind for a 2004 Gen Z Asian guy posting in an American 80s mobie group because I should watch K-dramas or anime like my peers, but here I am. I remember watching a few clips of Back to the Future at 14. I think I had a passing crush on Lea Thompson, but didn't think much of it. It wasn't until 21 that I finally watched the full movie properly, and she is way more attractive than I remembered because she had the perfect face that I am looking for. Trust me, if I had been born Gen X or a Boomer, I would have been completely crazy about her. Honestly, ever since watching her, I have zero attraction to modern Hollywood celebrities because they don't have actresses like her anymore.

Monster Squad!

Monster Squad has one of the best endings of an 80's movie. Such a great film (spoilers) Tom Noonan as Frankenstein.

Exciting Dragon/Drunken Dragon (1985) This Yuen Clan adjacent obscurity has probably the most insane opening to any martial arts film ever - Name anything that comes close to weaponized mini paddle boat vs 2 dudes joined up to make a go kart with flying guillotine wheels
