Help for my extremely sun damaged face. Where should I start?

61, no botox or anything except too much sun. I have a problem with thinking I only look good tan and now it's completely destroyed. My pigmentation , dark spots, sun bumps, texture from repeatedly peeling and wrinkles. My nose peeled so many times recently don't think color will ever be uniform.

Current concern about getting bumps that doesn't match any description of acne or condition. Appear out of nowhere, individual not cluster significant size under skin mostly cheeks, not pus filled, clear gradually but sometimes scab before. Its bumpy, scarred from improperly treated injuries, deeply wrinkled , so dark over upper lip gives mustache effect. I know I've broken the basic rule about sun protection.

Looking for first steps, skin care suggestions not seeking medical advice. Thanks!

Has anyone seen real results from Solawave or similar LED masks?

I’ve been trying to stay more consistent with my skincare and overall it’s fine I’m just starting to notice some early lines and a bit of uneven texture. Nothing major, but enough that I want to get ahead of it. I’ve been looking into things like red light therapy and other devices, but it’s kind of overwhelming trying to figure out what actually works vs what just sounds promising.

I’m not expecting anything dramatic, just something that gives a small improvement over time if you stick with it. I’ve seen people talk about bigger panel setups and stronger devices, but I’m honestly not that interested in something bulky or hard to maintain long term. I’ve been leaning more toward simpler options like masks I’ve seen Solawave come up a lot, along with a few others, but I’m not sure if they’re actually enough to make a visible difference or if it ends up being more of a subtle thing you only notice yourself. Would love to hear if anyone has used something consistently for a few months and felt like their skin actually looked a bit smoother or more refined?

BBL Experience

34F, Got BBL laser for redness and pigmentation from running outside.

Procedure was super quick (~15 min). They used ultrasound gel, did 3 passes, then spot-treated areas. I took Tylenol about an hour before. Pain honestly wasn’t bad, more just startling from the light and snapping sound. The small veins under my nose were definitely the spiciest part.

I was expecting to be really red after (my skin is sensitive), but barely had any. Just felt a little irritated the rest of the day.

Next day I had a bunch of dark spots come up, which looked worse before better, but they flaked off over the next 7 days.

Results are sooo good! Skin looks way more even and I feel like it took 5 years off. Totally worth it and I’ll probably do another round in the fall.

Suncare: All is not lost!!

Something I thought about today as I was lathering up with sunscreen for my outside walk...

It is never too late to start wearing sunscreen! Your skin decades down the road will thank you! I think there's a stigma in skincare that if you're 30+ and you're jumping on the SPF train late, then you're doomed.

I don't believe this.

I started religiously wearing sunscreen around 20. I am now almost 40 and have great skin relative to my peers that didn't protect against it re: sun damage. The same rules apply if you didn't start until 40. At 60 you'll be leaps and bounds ahead of those that never started!

Its all relative of course, but don't beat yourself up for not knowing before. You can start today and its never too late.

5 years after quitting the tanning industry (management) and how I’ve treated my skin since

I (31F) enjoyed tanning in my 20s to prepare for beach vacations and wasn’t sure what to do after early graduation…so I made a career in the tanning industry and corporate management from age 21-27. I pivoted to working in cosmetic derm sales and had the following done in 2021:

(8) Clear + Brilliant txs

(6) IPL tx

(2) Hydrafacial

(3) Fire and Ice laser facials

3 rounds of Botox

2 round of lip filler

1 round of cheek filler

I do not tan anymore and my job operates underground, which has now lead to me in my 30s and my current skin! I only wear eye makeup and do the following every day:

Tretinoin 0.5% (2024-2025)

Tret 1.0% (current)

PfectA SPF 50+

Derma Made medi wash

CosRX advanced all in one cream

Glymed comfort cream (night)

Evian facial spray (if dry)

Hypochlorous acid (if at gym)

Besides scheduling some time with my dermatologist and doing laser or chemical treatments, how can I improve my appearance before I can commit to dropping $$$? I have always had fine lines around my mouth and cheeks even before filler.

What to do about hyperpigmentation after pregnancy?

I’m 3 months postpartum, developed some melasma/hyperpigmentation while I was pregnant. For actives, I’m currently using alpha arbutin (from the ordinary) in the morning and alternating between benzoyl peroxide (la roche posay) and azelaic acid (also the ordinary) at night, along with moisturizers. Is there anything else I can do while breastfeeding? Or things I should prioritize once I’m done breastfeeding? I’m mostly bothered by the pigmentation on my upper lip.

I have no idea what I’m doing

I hate my skin.

My pores feel big. My cheeks are irritated. I absolutely hate my under eyes

With the exception of alcohol I have minimized or removed the things I consume that cause my cheeks and nose to flare up. I’ve been told it’s rosacea but I think I also wrecked my barrier with some cold and windy conditions this winter. It burned for weeks and weeks. I find that my skin does not heal well and any breakout sticks around for some time.

I have minimized my routine to the following:

AM: water only rinse, sometimes I use one of those silicone pads to gently exfoliate- I need to do this bc after a few days I skin feels like there is a layer of dead on my face, add moisture with a Korean skin moisturizer or jojoba oil alone. If I don’t add anything my face kind of burns. No more serums.

PM: micellar water on a cotton round to clean the surface. Rinse that with water. Again either moisturizer or jojoba oil alone.

Glycolic acid swab once a week because I find my pores especially around my chin are just gunked up and I need something once in a while. I rinse this off after a 10-15 minutes. Right now I’m especially broken out which has been more common since the winter. I hate it.

I am approaching 39, and I feel hideous. I’ve considered microneedling for a blank slate, but I don’t know if that is going to help with the barrier damage (if thats what is wrong) or redness/irritation. Or if it’s just going to be and expensive and uncomfortable procedure for nothing.

I just got the LRP cicaplast baume reading all the raves, but I just don’t know what the right thing to do is.

Caucasian, Eastern European, catch sun easily, started wearing a hat to cover my face last year after I had a photofacial (that did nothing noteworthy to improve skin or spider veins). SPF on the sensitive parts of the face but I don’t like it at all as it can be irritating. I am lost looking for advice and this is quite vulnerable.

Be kind please.

I look tired as hell, please help

I just recently had LASIK and it turns out I’ve been hiding some serious bags and puffiness under those glasses. Now I’m terribly self conscious!

2 month glow up

I am eloping in mid June and want to get my skin in the best shape possible! I am 32 and have someone fine lines, texture and large pores. I’m really leaning towards more DIY because I just don’t have the budget for expensive treatments. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Derm recommended BBL for rosacea, uneven skin tone/sun damage and telangiectasias, but I am seeing facial fat loss stories on RealSelf - how worried should I be?

My derm recommended BBL for type 1 rosace (diffused central redness on nose and cheeks), sun damage/uneven skin tone, and visible telangiectasias (broken capilaries) on/around my nose. She also mentioned Moxi laser later for texture, but that part is secondary. I’ve been looking into BBL and keep coming across RealSelf posts from people saying they got facial fat loss/volume loss and now I don’t know how seriously to take that.

Has anyone here had BBL or looked into this, and what did your own experience or research show?

Completely clueless - where to begin?

Gifted these by my mom who was equally clueless on how to use them. My (33F) skincare routine is pretty basic: wash with Clinique face wash morning & night followed by dickinsons witch hazel then L’Oréal wrinkle expert day/night moisturizer. My pores are pretty large and noticeable, and my face has a lot of redness and uneven textures along with some increasingly prominent horizontal lines on my forehead. I would like to improve my routine but have no idea where to begin or if I should even use these products. I’ve tried searching this sub & skincare addiction for ideas but I just get overwhelmed and feel lost on where to even start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Filler ?

I am 58 and have been getting Sculptra treatments for about 2 years. It no longer seems to ‘take’ in my lower face . The last time I talked to my injector about filler, she suggested she would use ‘Ultra’ for better structure and volume. I don’t need to be perfectly smooth but would like to little more volume in my lower face and possibly temples.

Please share your experience if you’ve been able to treat this area with fillers and how much would be needed for an initial, ‘conservative’ treatment? I will consider lips as well - mine are naturally thin and I would not want anything overly filled here, but lip flips do absolutely nothing for me now.

My forehead massage routine.

I am 36 and recently started to notice vertical lines on my forehead. I decided to get rid of them and started to experiment with different massage techniques.

  1. In the morning before massage.

  2. started with light massage and did intensive trigger point massage on the right side, it was painful.

  3. then trigger point massage on left side. Muscles are relaxed now, but excessive fluid creates uneven surface.

  4. after lymph activation in forehead. Timing from first to 4th picture - 10 minutes.

My problem was not only tight corrugator supercilii muscles, but also excessive fluid. Lymph was not going away, making heavy watery mass, that created creases from pulling heavy mass down when I sleep or look down. My first target was relaxing muscles. Second target - getting water out. That is more difficult, because needs understanding, at which point lymph is stuck. After lymph activation in forehead effect was nice, but creases come back in 10 minutes, meaning, that traffic jam of lymph is somewhere else down the road. After some research and reading publications, I came to understanding that submandibular (under jaw) zone creates traffic jam. Next few days I was doing painful trigger point massage under jaw, massaged lymph down to neck. Then I did lymph drainage massage from eyebrows to midline between eybrows (yes, against classical massage to ears, i did massage to center instead, because thats my individual lymph pathway from this zone!), then down to nose and down to under jaw. Effect was wonderful to me, and lymph drainage effect was more stable than from massaging forehead only! Submandibular zone was creating traffic jam, that lead to fluid accumulation above eyebrows.

So, now pictures before all this and few days later after intensive lymph drainage.

  1. before all these.

  2. few days later.

Keep on going! Trigger points and fluids are stubborn and keep coming back. But with regular massage I want to achieve stable effect.

Went down the bakuchiol rabbit hole. The sourcing story is wild.

Bacbhi meets the world

There's a plant called Psoralea corylifolia that grows wild in India and the Himalayan foothills of Pakistan and China. Babchi for short. It's scrubby legume, about knee-high. Its seeds have been used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries to treat vitiligo, psoriasis, and eczema.

Babchi seeds are also genuinely dangerous for your skin. That's not the end of the story.

Babchi seeds contain psoralens. Phototoxic compounds that make your skin hypersensitive to UV radiation, increasing the risk of sunburn, sun damage, irritation, and worse. Sytheon, the company that eventually figured out how to make bakuchiol safe for cosmetics, tested four babchi seed oils purchased on a major US e-commerce platform. Bakuchiol concentrations ranged from 1.6% to 12.1%. The rest? Uncontrolled phytochemicals, psoralens, and in some cases residual solvents like hexane in the thousands of ppm.

Bakuchiol was first isolated from those seeds in 1966. It took 41 years before anyone figured out how to purify it enough to be safe for cosmetics. In 2007, Sytheon introduced Sytenol A at over 99% purity with psoralen content below 3 ppm. That's the version the clinical research is based on.

The study everyone cites (and what they leave out)

The 2019 paper in the British Journal of Dermatology is the one that made bakuchiol mainstream. Run by the UC Davis dermatology department, led by Dhaliwal and Rybak. A randomized, double-blind, 12 week study, with 44 participants averaging 47 years old.

The results: 0.5% bakuchiol matched 0.5% retinol for wrinkle reduction. Roughly 20% decrease in wrinkle surface area at 12 weeks. Bakuchiol actually outperformed on hyperpigmentation. 59% of the bakuchiol group improved versus 44% for retinol. And retinol users reported 3-5x more scaling and stinging at every follow-up point. Not just during the adjustment period. Every visit.

Here's what most bakuchiol marketing leaves out. The bakuchiol group applied twice daily while the retinol group applied once daily, because retinol causes photosensitivity so it's night-only. That's double the exposure. The study had only 44 participants. The authors themselves said the findings need confirmation in larger trials. And it tested only one concentration of each compound.

Does this mean the study is bad? No. Well-designed, published in one of the most respected dermatology journals in the world, significant results. But a single study with 44 people is an opening argument, not a verdict. Treat it that way.

The bigger picture

The UC Davis trial isn't the only research out there. A 2014 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science established that bakuchiol triggers retinol-like gene expression despite looking nothing like retinol at the molecular level. A 2022 multi-method study found its antioxidant capacity was nearly twice that of vitamin E, and showed wound healing effects that retinol doesn't have. A systematic review of 30 published articles concluded bakuchiol shows results comparable to retinoids across photoaging, acne, and hyperpigmentation.

But here's the thing. Most of these studies are small. Many were conducted on lighter skin tones. The company that manufactures the highest-grade bakuchiol, Sytheon, is involved in or cited by most of the research. And the UC Davis trial remains the only head-to-head comparison with retinol using a control group. The science is promising. It's also early. More work needs to happen before anyone should call this settled.

The part that matters for what you're actually buying

To legally use the INCI name "Bakuchiol" on a product label, the ingredient has to be over 99% pure. Below that, it must be labeled as "Psoralea corylifolia seed extract" or "babchi oil." This is a real regulatory line, not a marketing distinction.

I come from specialty coffee, not the skincare industry. I got into formulation science because I recognized the same pattern. The gap between what's on the label and what's actually in the bag. In coffee, "single origin" can mean a specific farm lot at 1,800 meters or an entire country. In skincare, "bakuchiol" can mean a 99.7% pure isolate backed by clinical data. Or it can mean cheap babchi extract with 2% actual bakuchiol and a bunch of the phototoxic compounds that pure bakuchiol was specifically engineered to remove.

The difference matters. Read the INCI list. If it says "bakuchiol," you're getting the real thing. If it says "Psoralea corylifolia" or anything like babchi oil, it's a different ingredient with a different safety profile.

Has anyone here made the switch from retinol to bakuchiol? How long before you noticed results, and what surprised you about the transition?

Rings around lower neck

These make me very insecure and they seem to be getting worse. Is there anything I can do?

Is my skin too far gone/damged? What do I do?

I hope the censoring of my eyes is enough to make this acceptable. I’m trying to showcase my overall skin issues.

I moisturize daily, I wash my face daily, I wear sunscreen, I’ve been keeping up with this for a year more or less consistently and I don’t see any changes to my skin. I feel like my skin is just doomed and I need help and advice please! I’m sick of feeling like I look like a hag

Rosacea flare please help!

My (34F) rosacea has flared up really badly out of nowhere. I’m not sure the photo shows it very well, but my skin is quite bumpy, red and sore. The itchiness is pretty intolerable. I have a very basic skincare routine (Vichy 89 and Curel intensive moisturising cream) that seems to be making it worse. I had a hydrafacial with radio frequency and ultrasound last week. I also use a dermalux panel (red light and infrared 2x per week.

Does anyone have any recommendations to help calm my skin?
