Dining Area Progress

I want to share a bit of my progress designing a friend's 1955 condo.

Everything in the after is secondhand except the painting, which he already had in storage. The vintage chairs were bought for a steal and reupholstered and I painted the (contemporary) table with enamel.

I'm not satisfied with the rug, but I want to wait to replace it until the silly diagonal island is moved back in line with the kitchen (you can see its in-the-way corner in pic 1). I was initially interested in vintage style pinch pleat curtains for the whole open-plan living space, but I'm concerned about covering the beautiful windows.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially about the rug (and how to perk up his poor dracaena!)

Hi! I had some thoughts about Janelle Monaé's Met Gala look and I thought I'd share them and see what people think.

The thing I like about this system is the *awareness* that echoing the elements of someone's body can create a harmonious effect, not the idea that people *should* dress this way for every occasion. I'm very interested in stars who seem aware of what looks harmonious on them and decide to turn those guidelines on their head (see also SG Bjork).

Most of my favorite looks on Janelle are precise, high contrast, and sharp: textbook looks for FG that also fit her avant-garde sensibilities. She and her team are experts at making her look like a heightened version of herself by echoing her shape in her clothes and signature short, sharp hairstyles (see pic 2)

This year's Met gown is the opposite of her usual and I believe that's by design. Instead of her usual sharp and precise tailoring, she's chosen to cover herself in chaotic, mobile s-curves that swallow her body. She usually carefully shows her ankles and wrists, but here she's heavily draped trailing cords and moss over three of her limbs. She's also hiding her jaw and neck with a busy, textured element: another textbook no-no for petite.

This same gown on someone like Rihanna-who can carry all these long elements easily- might make a statement like "In my ideal world, humanity will create technology that helps us live in harmony with nature", by creating a robot Gaia type of character.

On Janelle, the striking disharmony suggests overgrowth, abandonment, and apocalypse. From my perspective, it says "Life will continue on Earth after humanity destroys itself".

The animatronic bugs and themes of technology and the future remain firmly on-brand for her, so imo it was very deft to abandon her usual silhouettes to create something that almost clashes with her physicality.

Do you guys have any other examples of stars successfully going completely against visual harmony?
