Rao Balkishan was an 18th-century King of the Ahirwal region in Haryana and a prominent figure in the history of the Rewari state. Born into the royal family of Rewari as the son of Rao Nandram.
His most significant historical contribution occurred during the Battle of Karnal in 1739, where he led a contingent of several thousand soldiers to support the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah against the invading Persian ruler Nadir Shah. When the Mughal defense eventually crumbled and the imperial army remained inactive or retreated, Rao Balkishan famously refused to flee. He led his 5,000 soldiers in a direct, courageous charge against the Persian center, fighting alone even after his allies had abandoned the field.
Rao Balkishan was martyred on the battlefield, but his ferocity was so remarkable that Nadir Shah personally praised his bravery after the victory. The Persian ruler reportedly remarked that if the Mughal Emperor had more commanders like the Rao of Rewari, the conquest of India would not have been possible. His sacrifice became a point of pride for his lineage.
