A case against the E/I dichotomy

To clarify, this is SPECIFICALLY referring to cases where people are stuck between the introverted and extroverted version of the same types, such as the ever-common ENTP vs. INTP issues, or as another example, ESFJ vs. ISFJ.

Now, there are two main ways to differentiate these pairs: a) compare the function stacks (usually comparing inferior functions), or b) try to determine your level of extroversion. I'm going to try to argue here that option A is far superior, and that option B is methodologically flawed (regardless of whether you use a cognitive extroversion or social extroversion model). Discussion and alternative takes on this topic are strongly encouraged.

Did you know that over half of adults in the US live with some form of chronic illness or disease? For those lucky enough to live without one, chronic illness really saps the strength of a person. Every activity takes effort. You know how, when trying to determine extroversion, people commonly ask, "do you feel recharged by spending time with people or by spending time alone?" Well, many cases of chronic illness, such as myself, only really recharge by sleeping. No amount of alone time or socializing will increase my energy level.

As you can imagine, this also affects where my energy naturally directs itself. When sleeping is my energy baseline, activities drain more energy from me (and therefore, become less appealing to direct my energy towards) the more action is required to do them. Visiting friends, being active, and contemplating things of the outside world ("extrovert things") become pretty much unthinkable unless I'm having a really good day, and it has nothing to do with the part of those activities that makes them "extroverted"! Getting out of bed, changing clothes, leaving the house, driving to another place - all of these things together end up leaving me almost completely drained due to the extra effort it takes me, and that's before I even get to the extrovert part!

Since chronic illness is so prevalent, many people don't realize that what they're experiencing isn't actually part of their personality, but an external, physical factor forcing them to conserve energy. This is literally over half the population, so it renders the E/I dichotomy practically useless!

[As an alternative, I recommend looking at the inferior functions of each type - for the ENTP vs INTP example, this would be Si vs Fe - and compare which you feel is less developed and more of a struggle for you.]

Progestin-only options to stop period

I’ve been on Slynd (drospirenone) for about 7 months, and it seems like instead of stopping my period, it’s stretched it out to last almost the entire month with very light bleeding. I’m looking for other options to try.

I’m unable to take any form of birth control with estrogen since there’s a history of blood clotting disorders in my family and I get migraines with aura.

Ideally, I’d like to find something that can stop or dull the entire hormonal cycle, not just the period, but I’ll take what I can get. I also know that stopping the period is not guaranteed for any birth control method.

With that said, what options do I have? Are there progestin-only IUDs? Other minipills? I’m aware of the Depo shot but would prefer to keep it as a last resort if possible due to the high numbers of complaints I’ve seen online. Thanks in advance!

Share your typology journey :)

I was interested to see people's journeys of what types they started at and where they are now! Here's a condensed rundown of my six-month-long journey:

  1. Was typed as an INTP as a kid when my mom made me take an MBTI test (not 16 personalities lol)
  2. ENTJ --> based on beginner knowledge of cognitive functions and input from my sister (also a beginner)
  3. INTJ 7w8 783 --> because I thought I was too socially introverted for ENTJ; discovered Enneagram
  4. ENTP sp7w8 714 VLEF --> discovered subtypes; realized my sense of justice is that of a 1 and I'm too concerned with authenticity to be a 3; realized social introversion =/= cognitive introversion and I yap a lot; discovered psychosophy
  5. ENTP ILE-Ti sx7w6 714 ELVF --> discovered Socionics; realized my 6 > 8, was told I was "too expressive" to be a 3E, got confused about Enneagram subtypes and SX instinct
  6. INTP LII-Ne IN(T) sp6w7 614 FLEV (current) --> discovered Jung and realized that yapping a lot =/= cognitive extroversion; realized that my 6 is so strong that it's not only >8 but also >7 (went through a brief SX6 phase as well); got a better grasp on instincts, finally got some clarity on my psychosophy (unobtrusive but definitely introverted physics, easily self-expressive but not easily vulnerable, lack of identity but no "identity crises")

So taking my first vs last self-types in every system, I went from ENTJ ILE-Ti sp7w8 783 VLEF to INTP LII-Ne sp6w7 614 FLEV. (Temperament and Big Five stayed consistent as melancholic-choleric and r/L/ux[I])

What were you guys' first self-types, and how did you get to where you are now? I want to hear your stories!

Cognitive extraversion

Im having a lot of trouble understanding the idea of cognitive extraversion. I’ve heard that it mostly has to do with whether you are focused on internal ideas or external objects, and I’d say I’m probably more focused on internal ideas, like analyzing my motivations and reason for my behaviors, debating ideas and fleshing them out.

However, I’ve also heard that it has to do with being reserved or social, or whether you process your thoughts internally or externally. I’m not very reserved - I talk a lot to anyone who will listen, and often *require* talking out loud to understand my own thoughts fully.

Can someone explain to me more clearly where the line is? Thanks!

So lost!! ELVF, FLEV, LFEV… no clue!!

I’ve been trying for months, unsuccessfully, to find my Psychosophy type, and the system is starting to feel flawed.

Of course, tests are not and will never be a good way to find type, but it’s a good screenshot to help illustrate the issue I’ve been having - specifically that I find myself relating a lot to both 3V and 3E. In this screenshot, you can also see that my emotion and logic elements don’t really align with any placement, and both volition and physics compete for the third placement.

I’ve heard before that 3V destabilizes the entire stack, but I find it very hard to believe that 3V would make another Emotion placement so insecure and afraid of their own emotions.

Questionnaire if it’s helpful: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1epA41YNVbuhplesmaz7Qp6gCULhsFjhQt8G8tnZv9h4/edit?usp=sharing

Questions welcome and encouraged, if you prefer to ask questions rather than read the questionnaire ask away. I welcome any and all help on this because I’ve been completely unable to get any type to fit well.

Thanks in advance!!

I looked up why she might be doing this before posting and saw a lot of people saying that cats naturally try to bury leftovers and mask the scent of food to avoid predators. But that doesn’t explain why she’s doing this before she even takes a single bite of the food??

This is right after dinner is served btw, so she should be hungry!

EDIT: lots of people mentioned that cats don’t like their food near their water, so I’ve moved the food bowl downstairs (have been wanting to do that regardless) and she is still scratching before and during her meal!

Im a first time cat owner, but did research before adopting and found that kittens shouldn’t be taken away from their mom before like 3-4 months minimum. Unfortunately, being a first-time cat owner, I don’t really have the information required to tell how old a kitten is just from their size/appearance.

A little over a month ago, I and my partner adopted two kittens (sisters). When we went to pick them up from their birth home, I asked how old they were to confirm, and the girl said they were between 3 and 4 months old. I was annoyed that she couldn’t give me an exact age/birthday, but it was so much worse.

We took them to the vet for the first time today and he asked us how old they were. I said about 4 months, since about a month has passed since we adopted them at “3-4 months old.” He said they’re way too small to be 4 months old (they’re about 1kg each) and estimates they’re probably 2-3 months old instead, meaning that when we adopted them, they were probably about a month old.

I’m pretty upset. This whole time, we’ve been feeding the cats kitten kibble (the birth home was feeding them kibble before we picked them up too, I checked when we adopted them), which they weren’t ready for and possibly still aren’t? And they were separated from their mother too early, which might explain some issues we’ve been having that they don’t seem to know to bury their poop in the litter box. (Luckily they do understand to use the litter box very well.)

Do I need to do anything differently to try to help their development, knowing that they were separated from their mother too early? Now that they are eating dry food, should I switch them back to formula or keep them on the dry food? What can I do at this point?? I really appreciate any help!!

Hello, I was pointed to this sub by a friend, so I apologize if this post isn't the type of content that this sub is looking for, but I have questions and want help!

I am pretty much completely new to Hellenism, but in one month (early June), I'm taking my honeymoon to several parts of Greece, and have made plans to visit historic sites of Hellenic worship such as the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, the island of Delos, etc. I am particularly excited about visiting the Temple of Artemis, as I feel very attuned to her through my asexuality.

My main priority in posting here is to make sure I visit these places with proper respect for the historic Hellenic religion. What can I be doing to be respectful of these religious sites? My second priority, if it seems possible, is to find something I can do to maybe consecrate an item to Artemis at her temple or something similar. I'd love to have an item from the temple of the goddess to which I feel most attuned.

Would appreciate any help people can give me! Thank you in advance!!

I'm a type 6, and I frequently have nightmares about having to leave for an international flight of some kind and scrambling to get packed at the very last minute. I had a dream like that a few nights ago and thought it would interesting to see if others' recurring nightmares are reflective of their type. I'm talking the nightmares that give insight into your psyche, not the nightmares like "I'm on a water slide and I go off a jump and fly so high that I break my legs on landing" (which I also have lol)

First pic is my hair when I was using a CG routine regularly and taking great care of my hair.

Second pic is now, where my hair is significantly shorter and I go swimming in a chlorinated pool six days a week.

I understand that some people with legitimately straight hair do post on this sub claiming to have wavy/curly hair. However, some of those people are curious if they might have waves they don't know about, and others actually do legitimately have waves that don't show up due to length, routine, etc etc.

It was really disappointing to feel excluded from the place where I first came to learn about CG to begin with, the place that let me feel so awesome with my waves instead of just having a frizzy mess every day.

Current routine (for bot):

  • I wash every day that I swim (5-6x per week), alternating days of Yuya "Repara y restaura" shampoo and Garnier hair food "Manteca de cacao" conditioner wash
  • Follow with Garnier hair food "Manteca de cacao" conditioner and rinse - I don't S2C because my hair seems too short for it atm
  • Scrunch with towel to remove moisture (lost my old cotton plopping shirt in the move) and optionally follow with Cantu Moisturizing curl activation cream combed in with fingers and scrunched
  • Air dry with intermittent scrunching
  • Substitute Pert "Hidratación profunda" shampoo and Garnier hair food "Banana fuerza" deep conditioner approximately once a month when chlorine starts building up
  • No sleep protection, will spray hair with water and fix on bad hair days

Asking because I’m not sure which is a better fit for my situation.

I am hearing, I have autism and am situationally mute because of it. I’ve always wanted to learn a sign language, partially to help with that but also because it just seems like a great thing to know.

I was born in the US, but just moved to Mexico to get married to my fiance. We will live in Mexico for at least the next couple years but then we’re not sure where we will live in the long term. I am fluent in Spanish, for what it’s worth.

From what I’ve seen, ASL has significantly better free resources for learning. (I studied language education in college, and I can say with certainty that Bill Vicars’ course is top quality.) However, I’d have to go online to find community and get practice, I’d have to do video calls with people instead of talking IRL.

On the other hand, there are LSM communities in my city, but free resources are sparse and not great quality. I know that it’s really important to learn about Deaf culture when learning a sign language, so I feel like the community is worth factoring into the decision, but I’m not sure how much.

Is it worth sacrificing in-person community for better resources? Or should I go the other way around? Any advice is appreciated!!

Edit to add: It seems like most people agree that LSM will be better for my situation, which makes sense! I'm currently having issues finding community to get to know and practice with though - in my city (Torreon, Coahuila) I've found 1) a deaf competitive soccer club, 2) a deaf motorcyclists club, and 3) a deaf Catholics club that was last active in 2023. Given that I'm bad at soccer, don't own a motorcycle, and am not Catholic, I'm really struggling right now. Please help with any ideas!
