The office chair wheels ruined my floor
My old office chair was fine until I moved apartments. The new place had wooden floors, and the casters on that chair sounded like a shopping cart. Every time I rolled back, it left a faint mark. I ignored it for weeks.
Then I looked down one morning and saw these dull grey tracks where I sit. Like the finish had been sanded off in two little paths. The landlord would definitely notice.
I went to the hardware store and asked for new wheels. The shop attendant showed me two types: hard plastic ones and soft rubber ones. I bought the rubber ones because I felt they could be quieter. Then I got home, popped the old ones out, and pushed the new ones in. Took less than a minute.
The difference was clear. No noise, and no marks; the chair actually rolled instead of dragging. I was annoyed I’d lived with the bad ones for so long.
Later, I got curious why the originals that came with the chair were so bad. I flipped the chair over and saw that they were the cheapest hard nylon casters. I searched the part number and found the same design on Temu, sold in massive boxes to furniture factories. No brand, just bulk, compared to the type listed on alibaba, which was only sold in single units. I told my brother, and he said his gaming chair did the same thing to his tiles. He swapped his too after seeing mine.
I used to think casters were all the same. But I’m certain they’re not. The wheels that come with most chairs are made for carpet in an office, not for a house with wood or tile.
Now I check the wheels before I check the chair. I believe this could help someone else, too.
