CMV: The USA has way too many states

Americans are so used to seeing the number 50 that nobody stops to ask whether it actually makes any sense.

Why do we need:
Two Dakotas
Two Virginias
A Rhode Island
Delaware existing as a separate entity
Wyoming having fewer people than many suburbs
50 governors
50 DMV systems
50 education bureaucracies
50 overlapping state legislatures
50 separate sets of weird laws

At some point this stops being “federalism” and starts becoming administrative clutter from the 1700s.

We already function more like regional blocs anyway:
The Northeast
The South
Great Lakes
Texas
West Coast
Mountain West
So why not actually organize around that reality?

For example:
Merge the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho into one large Northern Plains state
Combine most of New England into one state
Merge Delaware into Maryland
Combine the Carolinas
Fold Rhode Island into Massachusetts
Maybe even merge Oregon + Washington

People act like states are sacred ancient civilizations instead of arbitrary lines Congress drew while people traveled by horse.

And before people say “local representation,” most tiny states actually distort representation:
Wyoming gets the same Senate power as California despite having a microscopic population

Tiny states get massively disproportionate federal influence
Presidential elections become weird because of the Electoral College
Federal funding formulas get warped
Meanwhile we’re paying for duplicate bureaucracies everywhere.

I’m not even arguing for eliminating state governments entirely. I’m saying 50 is probably double what’s rational for a modern country with planes, internet, federal highways, and instant communication.

Any car people here have mechanic recs for a Chevy Cruze?

My check engine light came on (not flashing) so I took it to a shop. I already got quoted a turbocharger replacement for code P0299. Before I spend thousands, I want confirmation the turbo itself is failed and not a boost leak/wastegate/PCV issue, etc. which I know is super common on 2016 Gen 1 Cruze.

I asked what testing they did and they wouldn’t really give me a clear answer so I want to get a second opinion.

Anyone got recommendations of somewhere that will try to identify a cheaper issue than default to “just replace the whole turbocharger”

CMV: Crumpling dollar bills in my pocket makes more sense than folding them in a wallet

I stopped using a traditional wallet a few months ago and honestly I think people only defend wallets because they’re socially conditioned to think organized = better. My friends and coworkers think I’m crazy and I think they’re wrong.

Cash naturally compresses. A loose crumpled dollar is easier to just reach and grab, takes up less rigid space, and lets you access bills faster without flipping through layers of leather and card slots. It’s just more convenient.

I don’t like having to go to my wallet everytime and sift through. I just like to bring out a few pieces from my pocket and pay for what I need.

On rewatch, I don’t think _____ and ____ should’ve ended up together

Beard and Jane

I get that they’re both eccentric and chaotic, but she’s straight up toxic. For a show that really has such a strong theme of therapy and healing, I thought it was a super odd choice to have Beard never grow and stay with his same poor choice from season 1.

Do I really need to replace my whole turbocharger? If so, what’s a fair price?

Here are the codes in the pic. They swear there’s no issues with the wires, no cracks, just an internal turbo problem.

Could be a few things from my very minimal knowledge. I just asked them a few of these via email and waiting on a reply. Am I asking the right questions?

Is the wastegate loose or sticking? Is there shaft play in the turbo? Any oil in the intercooler piping? Are there accompanying PCV issues?

I'd wanna know that before dropping $4k on a 10 year old car ya know since it’s a 2016 and they quoted $3800 to replace the turbo

Two different things I think. One is about the actual steakhouse vibe and experience. One is what’s the best actual steak. Bonus points if you say the specific steak cut like “the 22 oz ribeye at XYZ”

Salamander seems more tucked away, lounge at the hotel and spa, steam room, sauna, enjoy the hotel itself. I know it JUST finished its remodel last year and I hear it sucked before that.

Park Hyatt has a nice big hot tub, Blue Duck Tavern looks great, probably better location between Georgetown and downtown.

Torn on which to choose

For the same price as regular rooms, you get a suite. You get a cooktop and a big fridge and silverware and plates. The rooms are larger.

Why aren’t they more beloved?

I cannot find anything in the manual and you can see this is a simplified remote not like the mini split one.

The beep when I change speed, temp, etc., is loud. And when my wife or I change it in the middle of the night the beep is especially loud.

How in the hell do I turn the sound down?!

It was in a small space in Shab row then moved to a big space where serenity was. Now it’s gone? I hadn’t been to Frederick in a while and when I was here yesterday I thought I’d go get top tier donuts and they were gone.

Are they gone? Renamed? Moved?

Where can a girl get some good donuts around here?
