Americans are much nicer than Canadians

IMO, Canadians really don’t deserve the overly nice reputation they have and Americans don’t deserve the negative reputation they have either.

I was born and raised in Canada and have lived here most of my life, but whenever I spend time in the US, I honestly feel more comfortable in my skin and less self conscious there.

As someone who’s visibly South Asian, it feels like Canadians have become increasingly cold and hostile toward us over the past few years. People always talk about how polite and tolerant Canada is, but my personal experience has honestly been the opposite.

What really stood out to me recently was seeing the reaction to a South Asian artist appearing on Jimmy Fallon. I’m so used to opening comment sections and seeing hateful comments that I was genuinely surprised by how positive so many of them were. It honestly caught me off guard. And maybe I’m cynical, but I don’t think the reaction would’ve been nearly as positive if the same thing happened in Canada.

In contrast, last week my city police had to lock down a post about a missing Sikh senior with dementia because people couldn’t control their racism.

I know every country has racist people and I’m not claiming the US is perfect. I just needed to vent because, in my personal experience, Americans have generally treated me with more warmth and kindness than Canadians have, both online and in person. I was actually surprised by how nice they were the first time I ever visited the US because I was expecting the opposite.

Also gotta love the Canadians downvoting me for venting about my own personal experience on a vent sub lol.

FYI I’m turning off notifications for this. I’m allowed to vent about my experiences and I don’t need to read or respond to any more rude comments invalidating my opinion. These are just MY experiences. I am not speaking for the rest of you. I also am not going to write out every single experience that lead me to form this opinion. No I am not basing it on a single incident. And yes I’m aware not EVERY single person in the country is the same.

The police in my city had to lock down this post about a missing senior because of all the racism

A senior with dementia went missing and people couldn’t control their hatred.

For those not in the loop, he appeared on Jimmy Fallon and performed Morni and the majority of the comments have actually been positive. I saw a lot around how good the performance was, how they’re adding his songs to their gym playlists, how handsome he is, how they want to see him at the Super Bowl, how they want to attend his concert because he’s coming to their city etc.

It’s a nice break from all the hatred we usually get online
