Applying for Italy Schengen visa to visit family – DIY or hire an agent?

Hi, I am planning a trip to Italy in a few weeks to visit my brother for a week this summer. I hold a Pakistani passport and have been living and working in the UK on a Tier 2 Skilled Worker visa for the last 2 years.

This is my first time applying for a Schengen visa. I have a full-time job and around £5k in my savings account to show for the application.

Does anyone have tips or tricks for a first-time applicant from the UK? Should I apply by myself or is it better to hire an agent to help with the process?

I'd appreciate any advice on how to get an appointment quickly and what documents I should focus on to ensure a high success rate. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi All,

Seeking some guidance on navigating an internal international move. I’ve been with an MNC in the UK for the last 3 years and have reached the highest position available at my current site in Manchester.

To progress further, my options are usually to move to our London office (which I’d prefer not to do) or wait for a rare senior opening in Manchester. However, my ultimate goal is to migrate to Australia.

I’ve had an open conversation with my manager about this. He’s very supportive and suggested that I reach out to the equivalent teams in our Australian offices to start informal discussions. The idea is to get on their radar now, so when a role eventually opens up, I’m a known entity.

Here is where I’m struggling:

I feel incredibly awkward reaching out to people I don’t know with "no context." I don’t want to come across as someone just hunting for a job immediately, but I also want to be intentional about my interest in relocating.

I would love your advice on:

How do I break the ice with a "cold" internal message or email to a peer or lead in the Australian office?

What should the "informal discussion" actually look like? What questions should I be asking to build a genuine connection?

For those who have successfully navigated an internal global transfer, what is the best way to keep that connection alive over a "long journey" without being annoying?

I know this won't happen overnight, but I want to start on the right foot. Any scripts, tips on corporate etiquette for this, or "dos and don'ts" would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi, apologies if this is not the right sub. I moved out of home and I'm living alone and missing the pure desi PK food.

I can cook a couple of basic Pakistani dishes like Daal, peas rice, and a few vegetables. I remember my mom used to tell me "boy learn how to cook" but I didn't. Now since I am living abroad, I realized I wish I could have, but it's never too late.

I tried chicken, beef, ribs and ended up with something that I can’t eat. YouTube recipes are good but I don't know why it didn’t come out very well. Not sure what is missing?

Any advice please?

Hi,

I'm an Overseas Pakistani. I've recently opened a RDA and started dipping my toes into the local market, but I'm having some serious second thoughts.

Looking at the macro situation, the PKR seems to devalue almost systematically. If I invest in a local asset that grows by 15%, but the currency drops by 20% against the Dollar or Pound in the same period, I've effectively lost money in global terms.

So, my question to the seasoned investors here is.What is your "Theory of Investment" for Pakistan? Is it strictly about the high interest rates/yields on instruments like NPC (Naya Pakistan Certificates)?

Are you betting on a long-term "mean reversion" or a massive undervalued play in the PSX?Or is it simply a hedge for future expenses you plan to have within the country? Why would someone choose to put capital into a devaluing

environment when they have access to stable overseas markets (S&P 500, etc.)? I'd love to hear the logic, the math, or even the emotional reasoning behind your strategy.Thanks.

Hi My Seniors,

I moved to the UK from PK about a year ago for work. I’m living in North Yorkshire and settling in well, but I’ve been reflecting a lot lately on the long-term journey here.

I’d love to ask the from you who moved from overseas. what life lessons have you learned so far? What are the "dos and don’ts" to secure a stable future here, especially when it comes to managing family expectations back home?

One of the biggest misconceptions people in PK have is that those of us living abroad are earning massive fortunes and can afford everything. As we all know, the day-to-day reality of UK expenses is very different - the grass always looks greener from the other side.

My biggest fear stems from an uncle of mine. He spent his entire life abroad, meeting everyone’s expectations and sending money back for every small or large request. People back home thought "4,000 or 5,000 PKR is nothing for someone earning Pounds." However, once he got older and moved back to PK, the people who used to call him their "favourite uncle" moved on. He hadn't built any personal wealth for himself because he gave it all away.

I don’t want this to happen to me or with anyone. I believe, While money isn't everything, it plays a critical role in our security and peace of mind.

What have you learned so far? What advice would you give to your 28-year-old "younger brother" to avoid here and back home traps?

I’m still single, so I have a bit more flexibility and time to plan right now. 😀

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Need your help.pls, looking for a way to earn some extra cash on the side because of the rising cost of living. I work a full-time job from Monday to Friday that finishes around 5:30 PM, so I am specifically looking for something with flexible hours that can fit into my evenings and weekends.

Have previous exoerience in customer service, including working in coffee shops and gelato. I am also a car owner with a full driving license.

If you know of any local cafes, shops, or businesses that need a reliable pair of hands for evening or weekend shifts, I would really appreciate any leads. I am ready to start as soon as possible and can be very flexible with my weekend availability.

Thank you for your help.

Hi everyone.

Looking for some advice on moving house. Is there a company that can come to my home, pack everything up, load it onto a truck, and then securely transfer it to the train station?

Alternatively, is there another way to move a full house? The furniture and belongings aren't too much, just enough to fill a medium-sized truck. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

Thanks!

Hey everyone, I’ve always been told the first step is the hardest, so for my 29th birthday today, I finally pulled the trigger. I know I’m a bit late to the party, but better late than never!

I’m a Muslim living in the UK, so I’ve started with a Sharia-compliant ETF: iShares MSCI World Islamic (ISWD).

My current setup:

  • Total Deposited: £100
  • Invested Today: £70 into ISWD
  • Remaining Cash: £30 sitting in my account

As someone who is 100% new to this and has zero experience with stocks, I’m feeling a mix of excitement and "what do I do now?"

I have two questions for the experts here:

  1. What advice would you give to a complete beginner starting at 29 with a long-term mindset?
  2. What should I do with my remaining £30? Should I put it all into the same ETF, or keep it as cash while I learn the ropes?

Looking forward to hearing your tips. Cheers!

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa and want to start investing in the stock market. I need to know if this is legally allowed or if it counts as prohibited self-employment under my visa terms. I am also worried about my future ILR application and whether having stock profits will complicate the process or require extra justification of funds. Finally, what are the tax implications for a visa holder and how do I report this to HMRC? If anyone has been in a similar situation, please share your thoughts.

Thanks.

Hi,

Is there anyone here from Malakwal (Punjab)? It’s my home town and I haven't been able to find any mentions of it or anyone from there on Reddit yet. Just wondering if I’m the only one.

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post, and I’m very new to investing. I’ve always had the mindset that gold is one of the best investments if you hold it for a few years.

I’d like to understand how you purchase gold and what type of gold is best to buy. My goal is simple: I want to buy gold now and hold it until I need the money.

I live in the UK and don’t expect to need the money for at least the next 3–4 years. I can invest around £2,000 at the moment and would prefer an option with minimal Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

Thanks in advance for your advice.
