A House Divided Cannot Stand: Portland Stands with Vancouver

For over fifty years, the Vancouver Whitecaps have been an essential pillar of North American soccer culture. Since 1975, the fierce but respectful rivalry between our cities has defined what it means to be a supporter in the Pacific Northwest. Today, that history is under threat.

The Timbers Army and the 107IST stand in total solidarity with the Vancouver Southsiders, Rain City Brigade, and all Whitecaps supporters. We believe that the football culture in Cascadia and across North America is significantly poorer without the inclusion of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

A club is not merely a franchise to be moved for "more profitable" markets; it is a community asset with deep roots in its city. We call upon the following:

  • To Major League Soccer: Recognize the value of tradition and the robust existing multigenerational fanbase in Vancouver. Relocation is not an option.
  • To Local and Provincial Government: We urge the City of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia to finalize a viable stadium solution.
  • To the Global Soccer Community: Join us in amplifying this cause. Cascadia is a region defined by its rivalries, but it is strengthened by its unity. We will fight for this cause alongside our rivals for as long as it takes.

The Whitecaps belong in Vancouver. #SaveTheCaps

We're sorry, Thomas Müller

Herr Müller,

Thank you for taking a massive paycut and coming to Vancouver. Thank you for loving this city and offering to lead it to victory. Thank you for taking us to all time highs in the MLS in 2025.

We are sorry your efforts - which we are paying you penny on the dollars for, have been weaponized to move this team while it's stock is at an all time high.

Thank you for taking a chance on us.

Why does MLS want them to move so bad?

Nova Scotian here who has seen lately the desire for the league to move the team. Most likely just for big money for the owners and better USA markets.

My question is if MLS wants a team in Vegas, why not just put an expansion club there and then they keep Vancouver, which seems like a great market and all the owners get a cut of the expansion fee?

I follow soccer but not MLS, so excuse my possibly ignorance.

Allow Naming Rights and duplicate the sounders deal with Lumen.

If the province actually wants to assist and gain revenue and assist the whitecaps while keeping the team here... why not just copy the sounders deal that works? they're tenants of Lumen Field and they just simply have a superior deal.

stadium naming rights are a giant revenue stream that could be shared with the long term tenants BC lions and Whitecaps (sounders don't even get this, so that would be a big incentive to keep the whitecaps in Vancouver).

it's been BC place for a long time, but personally I wouldn't really be all that wounded if it became something else Scotiabank/Telus Stadium

The REAL stadium ownership issue

Unfortunately, I do believe the fact that the Whitecaps don't own their stadium is the main factor making relocation likely - but not for the reasons being pushed in the media. The narrative we keep hearing is that the Whitecaps aren't getting a big enough cut of concessions, parking, and other stadium revenue streams, and that a better lease or a new soccer specific stadium (at the PNE or wherever) would fix the problem. I don't think either of those options make sense in reality, and the fact that neither the current owners nor any potential buyer seems to be seriously pursuing either option supports this.

The real issue isn't revenue split percentages, it's that the owner of the stadium needs to own the team, because stadium ownership is what financially ties an owner to the city. And for that to actually work, the stadium itself needs to be the primary profit engine - either through the revenue it generates hosting events all year round, or through the underlying real estate appreciating in value. Concessions and parking during Whitecaps games are rounding errors in that equation. MLS has 34 regular season games, so 17 home games. Parking and beer sales from 17 games are not going to bridge the gap to a $400M franchise valuation. But if you own the stadium and the team that plays in it, you have a fundamental vested interest in keeping that team in that city. You'd either hold both, or sell both as a package, but you would never sell the team to someone who relocates it out of your building.

So why doesn't the PNE MOU, or any new dedicated soccer stadium in the region, actually solve this? Because a standalone soccer stadium with only 17 home games needs to be booked constantly with other events to justify its existence - concerts, trade shows, other sports, etc. The problem is Vancouver already has a number of venues competing for these events - BC Place, Rogers Arena, Pacific Coliseum, the new PNE Amphitheatre for the World Cup, and even the Convention Centre. A new outdoor soccer-specific stadium would be competing for the scraps at the bottom of that list - and that's before you consider it might be one of three venues fighting for events at the PNE site alone. Best case scenario, you land the BC Lions and a handful of random events per year. But when you already have a world-class stadium like BC Place in a city this size, it's genuinely hard to make the case for a second, smaller, less accessible one.

The uncomfortable conclusion is this - the Whitecaps don't just need to own a stadium, they need to own BC Place. Unfortunately, it would almost certainly be prohibitively expensive for any private owner, and the Provincial Government would never buy the team. But as far as I can see, they're the only party where the math could actually work - and that's precisely why this problem probably doesn't get solved.

Really hope I am wrong about this...

Imagine if the Whitecaps win the MLS cup this year

Imagine if the Whitecaps win MLS Cup this year while relocation is still being considered.

Moving a struggling team is one thing, but moving a successful one at its peak feels like a completely different conversation.

Would that change how people view this situation?

How did this relocation stuff escalate so quickly all of a sudden?

For the longest time there was barely any meaningful news coming out about the Whitecaps sale situation, aside from that fact that it wasn't going anywhere. They announced that PNE MOU thing in December and you'd hear little vague updates but nothing too serious. The general public/fanbase never seemed too worried. Every time a Reddit thread was started on here about this there'd be a bunch of backlash about how we should just keep our mouths shut and go to the games to support the team (as if that would be enough to stop relocation).

Then like 2 weeks ago the "Save the Caps" thing finally started and people started to care more... and then like 3 days later supposedly the Whitecaps are at imminent risk of relocating to Vegas all of a sudden?!? And only now are people like Ken Sim and David Eby being looped in...How were the out of the loop up until this point...?! And we haven't heard one thing from the owner's - I don't even know what any of them look like (aside from Steve Nash...).

The further this goes along, the more it seems clear that this was just a premeditated long-term plan by the Whitecaps owners to dump the team for a big profit.

- They ran the team super cheaply for the longest time (basically from 2011 to 2024). I think we all have recent hindsight bias and often forget that things have only been more positive in the last 12 months.

- They tried to gouge all the fans for that Messi Game disaster back in 2024 - I have season tickets and I think they were selling single seats in my section for close to what I had paid for the entire season.

- They announced the team was up for sale in December 2024.

- They only started really "investing in the team" when they signed Muller in summer 2025, AFTER they already had the team up for sale for more than half a year. I always had a hunch that the purpose of this was basically a marketing strategy to boost the stature of the team to help them sell it.

- They kept trying to push this narrative about the stadium being the big issue, but they were offered both a better deal at BC Place and the PNE MOU thing.

- You don't hear any meaningful updates until conveniently right after the Whitecaps last home game, when we are entering a 3 month break for the World Cup.

- And then all of a sudden, it sounds like the team is moving to Vegas and it's too late to stop it now.

This all seems like this premeditated plan to allow the owners to quietly cash out while staying away from the public spotlight. I think their "the stadium is the issue" narrative was mostly BS and was just used as a PR strategy in an attempt to make the province/city look like the bad guys rather than them. And what, now they are going to dump the team during the World Cup break so they don't have to deal with any backlash (at Whitecaps home games, etc.)?

The fact that David Eby and Ken Sim are only being looped in now suggests to me that the owners didn't try to engage them earlier, because they were never serious about wanting to keep the team here and they were always planning on cashing out for the max $$ by selling to an owner looking to relocate the team. Even now Ken Sim is saying "the owner's need to tell us what they want"... and the reason they aren't is because they have no intention or desire to continue owning the team in Vancouver. If they did, these conversations would have happened a long time ago.

It all just feels so premeditated and cowardly.

“MLS fans—can we come together to stop another relocation?”

Whitecaps vs LA Galaxy

This might sound a bit unconventional, but maybe we can appeal to the LA Galaxy fan base.

I know we’re rivals, but situations like this go beyond that. If there’s a real risk of the Whitecaps being moved, maybe supporters across MLS can come together and show that fans don’t want to see clubs relocated.

We’ve seen it before with the Columbus Crew, where fan support across the league helped keep the team where it belongs.

If anyone here has connections with Galaxy supporter groups, it could be worth reaching out. At the end of the day, this isn’t just about one club, it’s about protecting the game and the communities that support it.
