Hubby opened Knob Creek 21 to celebrate Michigan winning the Championship. Wow!!!! This is special. Just smooth from start to finish. I haven't experienced very many higher end Bourbons. This will change that.

The perfect travel companion

Just got back from my first Kentucky trip—did a ton of distillery tours and tastings, and of course couldn’t leave empty-handed.

Quick tip I didn’t expect to come in clutch: I saved those bubble sleeves from a recent online bottle order and reused them for the trip home, and they worked perfectly. Every bottle made it back safe, no leaks, breaks or cracks. Definitely going to keep these on hand for future trips!

I’ll drop a follow-up post soon with everything I picked up over the weekend .

Just found this bourbon on the shelf at my local liquor store. 1) I'm not really sure what it is - does anyone know more about it? 2) it's very tasty!

I went to the liquor store looking for a higher proof bottle at a 'relatively cheap' price. I came across a knob creek 7 Rye, which was 100 proof which I picked up. Then I saw this. $50 for a 126.6 proof bourbon! I had to get it, so I picked it up and it's delicious. I'm very happy to have the bottle.Does anyone know more about it? I looked up World Whiskey Society and they seem to have higher end bourbons, but I cannot find this bottle anywhere. It's labelled 168/175, so that's kind of cool too. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated!

Thoughts?

Personally, I think Evan Williams is one of the better cheaper whiskeys. Wonder if anyone else agrees/disagrees.

Old Forester SBBS Costco Pick

Tonight’s pour is Old Forrester Single Barrel Barrel Strength. This is a pick from my local Costco that I paid $59 for. They had 4 different barrels to choose but I only picked up 2. This bottle is from warehouse K, Floor #1. It comes in at 128.3 proof. I get brown sugar on the nose. I really love the viscosity of this bottle. Coats the mouth well. Really nice brown sugar and baking spice on the palate. So very good for the price. I have not cracked the other bottle yet but this is so good I can’t wait to get into the next one. My wife prefers this proof point over a block of ice so that’s how I’m enjoying it with her this evening. Hope you all have a great Monday evening.

Liquor Vault

Struck out trying to get this one a few times. When we were nextdoor at The Italiano for Easter brunch (great spot, btw) I just went in to browse and there is the Buckner's 10-Year. score!

Joseph Magnus Bourbon Private Barrel blind

Spec's pick and Empire Liquor pick. Both 10 years old, Spec's pick with a proof of 105 and Empire 109.96.

I've been wanting to blind these two for a while now. Finnaly I got both bottles that have been breathing for a few weeks.

Empire Liquor pick. Nose: caramel, but then subtle oak and rye spice pop up, and a lot of cherry; brown sugar on the background as it sits. 8

Palate: cherry, creamy, a little nutty, peanut brittle, subtle oak, some sweet wine. 7.5

Finish: great, long and warm finish, with mostly cherry and no spice. 8

Overall 7.83

Spec's pick. Nose: a lot of sweet oak, butterscotch, dark sugar, some sweet baking spices.7.5

Palate: leather up front, creamy, sweet oak, roasted marshmallows, dark fruits, 7.75

Finish: medium long, fruity 7.5

Overall 7.58

I ended up giving a slightly higher rating to the Empire pick, but they are very close. I think it's a matter of preference. The Spec's pick leans more on the oaky notes, and the Empire pick on cherry and dark fruits. I like both.

Given the unique aspect of the barrels in which they were aged (American Oak barrels manufactured by a French company specialized in wine barrels), this bottle is worth having. Both picks are delicious, and the story behind it makes this edition a piece of history.

Found one of my unicorns

I stopped in to my local today and snagged one of the last they had. Slightly more than I wanted to pay but can’t wait to try it.
