Newbie discussion question: surprisingly high value records

I’m about ~4 years into collecting vinyl. It’s been a quick obsession and I love the community that really loves physical music.

My question has to do with how certain random records are so high in value/cost and so hard to find. Records one might not expect. I understand that some of the common reasons are limited number of records made, high popularity, etc.

I’m more-so wondering about the records that I can’t seem to find an answer as to why they’re so expensive. The record I came across that finally made me post this is Gunna’s record “Drip or Drown 2”. (Don’t judge me - it’s nostalgic to me and is associated with personal happenings during a very particular year of my life). It’s way more expensive than I expected and more than any of his other albums.

Any thoughts on this topic are welcome - I had no idea how much I had to learn before getting into this a few years ago.

Plastic Bag Sleeves are the worst

I really hate this type of sleeve, but they come standard in a lot of newer records. If you like them please tell me why, because I just think they're annoying to handle and usually store awfully in the jacket.

Right place, right time

The guy always brings the media cart out around 6:15-6:30 at my local goodwill. Grabbed the whole pile before sorting them. These are the best ones, but lots of Alabama, Elvis & Soundtracks not shown.

First Time Moving The Collection

I'll be moving in just a couple days, and this is the first time I've moved since I started collecting. They were nearly the last thing I packed, and I still left a bag of records out to spin while I wrap up my packing. I'm afraid to stack them, so I've just set them all out beside each other. I plan to move these myself. My intention is for them to be the last thing loaded up and the first thing unloaded at the new house. Super grateful I'm moving while my collection is still relatively small.

Feel free to comment any lessons learned or horror stories you've had moving your collection.

Smashing Pumpkins - GIsh - Very first-est OG Caroline 1991

I got this copy of Gish a few years back, directly from Raymond Coffer. He was the band's manager at the time and is the first person listed in the record's "special thanks" notes. It was open but unplayed, brand-new mint inside and out. Until I got my hands on it! I never hesitate to spin it, man, that's what they're for.

So that's why I joked it's first-est. Gotta figure this was one of the first 5 or 6 they ever unpacked, maybe? Like does the provenance make you think this was an early delivery to the band, so this is actually a pre-release edition then...I'm just goofing off.

I'm both old enough now and cool enough back then that I actually heard Gish before Siamese Dream, lol. This *really* cool girl Kara had it on her Walkman and we listened together in wood shop class, then she taped it for me.

I don't really care what it is or what it's worth: it's my copy of Gish and it's got a cool backstory and that's it. Spin your records, folks!

Playing My Records Alphabetically While Letting My 3 Year Old Pick The Album

Welcome to my experiment. While I'm already up to "E", we have to start at the start. So here is Pick #1: "A"

Allman Brothers Band - The Allman Brotherd Band At Fillmore East | Capricorn Records - CPN-2-0131 | 1974

A great pick by the little man to start this experiment. This is the 1974 Capricorn reissue. There are over 250 different versions of this album, and audiophiles will say they're all different and cling to their darlings. I have nothing to compare this version to, but I will say that this cut sounds great to me. I guess my only complaint is that Oakley's bass is a bit low and muddied in the mix. Gregg's vocals soar. Duane's guitar is front and center.

The music on this album is untouchable. These kids had "it". Whatever they were tapped into was working, and they knew it.

A few quick anecdotes:

When the Allmans first came to play Bill Graham's club in 1969, the staff in the Fillmore East paid no attention to the band as they were setting up to practice. Just some more dudes with some beat up Marshall stacks. That ended immediately when they started playing. Everyone stopped working. The offices were emptied. The folks working this club had heard a lot of music, but nothing like this. It was apparent that the Allmans were special.

The story of the photograph that was used for the cover of this LP is that Duane had just copped a bag from someone and was checking it out when they were told to pose for the photo. He quickly hid the bag in his hands which is the reason for the laughter. A good story for an iconic photo.

Anyway, listen to this record. It's about as American as music could possibly get. And listen to it loud. Like "all the way up" loud. Let your neighbors listen to it, too. It should be so loud that you question the volume for a minute.

A true masterpiece of live recordings.

Pink Floyd DSOTM Original Master Recording 1979

I don’t play it very often as I would like to. It sits top shelf as one of my favorites and I usually go to the cd or one of my other copies on record format. Has some minor paper scuff but doesn’t impact playback. I love just looking at it and seeing that yellow Original Master Recording at the top.

Edit: For everyone saying this is a 1981 issue because of the italized Origin Master Recording: Thank you. I will update my Discogs to the 1981 even though my runouts only are listed on the 1979. I’m aware that Discogs could have the 1981 reissue listed by accident in the 1979. Thank you for educating me.
