I got my appeal decisions (freshman)

I was unfortunately rejected however I’m already done grieving over my initial rejection and I’m just gonna go through the community college route and transfer later. Just letting everyone know to see if they received an appeal decision too.

Best of luck out there :)

Rebuilding Campus #5 (Part 1/3)

Starting the biggest project (so far) for this architecture series! Upon completion, this miniature model of the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health (HRC) will stand at 60 x 16 studs (18.9 x 5.0 inches) with an approximately 1:300 ratio.

The east module of HRC comprises of multi-grade entries from 15th Ave and campus, which is also the greatest challenge of this model. At a miniature scale, every single plate elevation change may proportionally affect size of the building, which had indeed changed throughout past 13 iterations that led up to this finalized version. While the exterior depth/height ratio may not resemble the more square-like look of the actual building, this has been sacrificed to allow for more accurate interior presentation across floors.

Over the next several months, I plan to continue designing the central block and western module (which includes Starbucks). This project is aimed to conclude in Summer 2026 (after graduation). In the meantime, I'll release several smaller models including the Quad, as requested by many of y'all in the past.

Many thanks to the publicly available floor plans and reference images found from Miller Hull, the humanitarian architecture firm that designed this building. As always thanks for all the community support that kept me motivated for this project.

Best Dorms at UW

Hey everyone, I’m planning to study engineering at the University of Washington and was wondering what the best places to stay on campus are. Any recommendations?

Melting 🫠

i have a class in Smith 304 ... and it's only 60° F outside, which as someone from this area, is T-shirt weather ... but that room is so fucking hot. I'm more prone to sweating, but God, I was so uncomfortably hot.

I am DREADING the later part of the quarter when it starts reaching the high 60s, god forbid the low to mid 70s (hopefully nothing hotter than that but...)

I started fanning myself in class with my notebook (and I don't know if it was in response to me, or if other people were noticeably hot - I sit in the front row) so they opened the doors and I think the windows, but... that is not going to be helpful once it gets even 5 degrees hotter.

if anyone is besties with president Jones, will you please ask him to deliver a box fan or two to Smith 304. I am going to become a puddle before the quarter is over.

(if anyone has hot classrooms, UW allegedly provides box fans, but only if there's a "demonstrated harm" from the heat ... which I understand in conserving money and energy, but hate as a user of the building.)

I still may make a request because worst they will say is "no" and best answer is walking into the classroom and seeing a box fan and feeling like I have been blessed by God

Found rosary at UW Quad

If you can tell me the color and pattern of the bag it was in I’ll get it back to you. Hopefully you’re local

Is UW informatics that unserious compared to UCSD data science, for example

So I’m a rising senior choosing between UCSD data science, UIUC is+ds and udub informatics direct to major. I’ve seen a lot of people say informatics is hard to get into but it is not the best way to do ds or ml coursework at udub. People usually suggest doing applied math:ds instead. So is the informatics experience really that different to something I might get at UCSD ds? How easy would it be for me to transfer from informatics to applied math? Thanks guys!

[Results and Decisions] UW CLMS

I had applied to the MS in Computational Linguistics Program at the University of Washington, Seattle.

I have been waitlisted for this program and am looking to connect with the upcoming/current/past students of this program. Feeling really lost TBVH, really thought this was a sure shot admit as the program completely aligns with the research I have been pursuing :(

Is it safe to go from SeaTac to U District late at night?

Hi! My friend and I (both female) will be arriving at SeaTac around 9:45 PM after traveling from LA, and we’re planning to take the Link Light Rail to the U District.

I’ve heard mixed things about safety at night, so I wanted to ask how safe is it to walk from U District station to nearby apartments late at night.

Would it be better to just take an Uber from the station instead of walking?

Any advice would really help. Thanks!

am i missing a lot by being an out of state student who can't make it to in-person orientation?

i'm an incoming freshman and since i live internationally, i wasn't and won't be able to attend some of the earlier orientation sessions on campus. i have a bit of FOMO like i'm wondering if a lot of social networks will be established during this time period and people will be finding roommates, etc.

should i be trying to make up for it by reaching out to more people online? but i also think that it's better to meet people irl rather than online because then you actually know more about them as a person and not just what they tell you (i feel like on a screen you're kinda just judging people by looks and meeting the actual person feels more holistic iykwim)

how should i (incoming freshman) look for a roommate?

PLEASE this is actually a serious dilemma for me because although most people are looking for friends/roommates online these days, i feel like on the internet we ultimately only judge people's looks and ig whatever little information they're able to convey in the caption. usually we're not told about their living habits or anything of the sort (i guess we would have to reach out to them to find out).

i thought about going random (UW has preferences on the survey right) because then i don't have preconceived expectations thinking we would be friends, like if my roommate ends up being my "main friend" then cool, but if not then cool too ig. but if i found them beforehand there's this belief that we're going to be friends and if we're not as in sync as we thought we'd be then that's disappointing. but also i feel like you could go so terribly wrong with random and it's kinda just better to play safe with this kinda thing. with random you could either hit the jackpot and get a great amazing friend or get a shitty roommate. but i feel like looking online makes me feel so catfished so maybe i'll just find a friend of a friend???? since i'm out of state, i wasn't able to attend the in-person orientations so i couldn't meet anyone yet.

i was also thinking about a double or a triple. pros for double: more peace and quiet (less distraction when you're working there's no side convo), less time waiting for shower, no "duo in a trio" problem

pros for triple: easier social dynamic, less awkward, less risk cuz it's like two rolls of the dice in case you don't vibe with one of them you can be better friends with the other one

if anyone who went through this has any advice, PLSSS lmk!! much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

Switching to Business

I got admitted into UW Jackson’s school for international affairs, however I’ve recently been heavily leaning towards business administration or economics for an accounting pathway.

Does anyone know how hard it is to transfer to business and econ as an international affairs major?

For context, I also got admitted into calpoly slo’s business school and am debating what would be the best route as someone’s who’s wants to work in socal down the line.
