Zoning

I’ve had to go to Vancouver, BC, a lot for work and have appreciated how much foot traffic there is around downtown, especially compared to Seattle. Now I’m in line at Ludi’s and amazed at how long it is. In a sane city I feel like there’d be other storefront options close by/within line-of-sight where competitors could open up and draw in folks who don’t want to wait, but around here it’s a few bars and a bunch of hotels and apartments. Why aren’t there more storefronts downtown?

We’re more or less tourists, since we live in Vancouver, Wa and only come here occasionally. But we wanted to see the new waterfront and aquarium. Even with the crowds, it did not disappoint.

Bain bridge island ferry singers

Are they paying people to sing on the ferry or something? We were in the ferry coming back to seattle yesterday and my LORD the singing was obnoxious. Probably any other singer would not be as bad but the guy singings voice was disturbing. Some people just want peace. It’s a ferry we don’t need a whole concert on the ferry

Week one of Xlake, what are your honest thoughts?

A week of service, how's it been? Main gripes, issues, etc?

As an operator, its been fantastic, the oohs and ahhs hasn't gotten old at all. I still do the same going over the bridge. The 2 line definitely has the better views on a clear day in my very biased opinion 🤣

Lynnwood has been... interesting. Getting people off the trains in a timely manner has been the biggest contention, which can slow things down from Shoreline South into Lynnwood and can get a bit tight from U district to IDS. I believe getting the DSTT back to 30, at least between Westlake and Pioneer would help with some of that and having the route set manually by LCC coming into IDS would help with flow a bit more.

The Woojin fleet is approaching 4 vehicles in testing, 2 in dynamic testing at OMF-East, 2 in active testing/completion, so that will help with trainset availability as they finish those up.

The crowding is my biggest concern as we were often close to or at standing room only Tues -Thurs. The biggest surprise was the amount of airport and Amtrak travelers. As I mentioned before, out of JPS, I make an announcement with the option of IDS or Capitol Hill xfer points. Most do get off at IDS but I've had some thank me for the Cap Hill suggestion just because of the amount of luggage they have and makes the transfer far easier.

Personal thoughts - It would be great to have a center platform at Pioneer Square. We use the turnback for vehicle moves between OMF-Central and East, so having a center platform there wouldn't work. Pioneer Square has been there before as a temporary solution but a permanent solution with stairs and an elevator would be a large project and would likely disrupt operations, not to mention it would be narrow AND would require the SB train to be there, so any service disruption would have a ripple effect on the entire system..

Happening now: trans rights chalking event in front of Federal building on 2nd

Event started at 6, looks like about 80 people currently, I think there will be speakers and a march and the whole event will wrap up between 8 and 9.

What tourist activities are you happy to repeat with out of town visitors?

We know all the classic tourist attractions, but what are the tourist activities you’re happy to repeat with out of town visitors? What do you tell people to skip? Here’s my usual list:

-ferry to Bainbridge (or other ferry trips for regular visitors)

-Pike Place Market

-Volunteer park water tower for views on the cheap or smith tower

-Lincoln park, golden gardens, the locks, Seward park, or kubota gardens

-kayaking and a meal at agua verde

-intro hike like little si

-paddleboard and hang out around alki beach

I’m getting a lot of visitors from out of town this year and looking to switch things up! Personally I struggle with repeating the typical tourist route over and over, so I’m curious what other people show off to highlight our city!
