how should i (incoming freshman) look for a roommate?

PLEASE this is actually a serious dilemma for me because although most people are looking for friends/roommates online these days, i feel like on the internet we ultimately only judge people's looks and ig whatever little information they're able to convey in the caption. usually we're not told about their living habits or anything of the sort (i guess we would have to reach out to them to find out).

i thought about going random (UW has preferences on the survey right) because then i don't have preconceived expectations thinking we would be friends, like if my roommate ends up being my "main friend" then cool, but if not then cool too ig. but if i found them beforehand there's this belief that we're going to be friends and if we're not as in sync as we thought we'd be then that's disappointing. but also i feel like you could go so terribly wrong with random and it's kinda just better to play safe with this kinda thing. with random you could either hit the jackpot and get a great amazing friend or get a shitty roommate. but i feel like looking online makes me feel so catfished so maybe i'll just find a friend of a friend???? since i'm out of state, i wasn't able to attend the in-person orientations so i couldn't meet anyone yet.

i was also thinking about a double or a triple. pros for double: more peace and quiet (less distraction when you're working there's no side convo), less time waiting for shower, no "duo in a trio" problem

pros for triple: easier social dynamic, less awkward, less risk cuz it's like two rolls of the dice in case you don't vibe with one of them you can be better friends with the other one

if anyone who went through this has any advice, PLSSS lmk!! much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

am i missing a lot by being an out of state student who can't make it to in-person orientation?

i'm an incoming freshman and since i live internationally, i wasn't and won't be able to attend some of the earlier orientation sessions on campus. i have a bit of FOMO like i'm wondering if a lot of social networks will be established during this time period and people will be finding roommates, etc.

should i be trying to make up for it by reaching out to more people online? but i also think that it's better to meet people irl rather than online because then you actually know more about them as a person and not just what they tell you (i feel like on a screen you're kinda just judging people by looks and meeting the actual person feels more holistic iykwim)

can someone give me advice on choosing dorms (north vs. west campus)

I'm an incoming freshie and wanted to know - does north or west campus have better dorms?

i think safety is a big issue because I don't want to be sleeping with one eye open, nor do i want commotions outside late at night. (someone from my school told me a group of ppl w/ guns broke into her dorm but idk which dorm this person was in) i heard west campus is more dangerous and north is more peaceful? but also west is better socially?

i was also wondering about the proximity to places, i'm majoring in bio and idk if that makes a difference regarding distance to different classes. i'd also like to be near dining/gym.

i also like a new, clean feel, so based on the interior design I like maple hall (i like the mill and the gym but i don't know if everyone's going to be an engineer and not really social), oak hall, mccarty hall, lander hall, poplar hall, terry hall, elm hall, and the apartments.

pls help me out thank uuuu
