Just received my GME. Hana Umami Red cartridge. Amazing sound - I’ll pass this down to my kids. End game achieved!

Mentioned to a coworker I wanted a U-Turn Orbit, he happened to have the exact one I wanted. Only used it twice, so it's practically brand new to me!
Used to collect vinyl and sold my equipment and vinyl years ago. Got back into it last fall and stared over. For a low budget setup (I buy used and thrift mostly) it sounds pretty decent!
Fluance RT80 with VM95E into Edifier RT1280s and hardwired (not BT) into the Marshall for added depth. Using an Art Phono Precision preamp. I also use Auralex isolation pads for vibration control.
Any advice for going forward for my sound and/or collection?
400$ in records later (I know, I know…), Here’s a 1 month update on my beginner set up!
Loving it so far. I’m glad I went with the lp70x and the RT1380 for the ease of use and superb sound quality to listen casually.
Enjoying music on LPs is so fun. I love the routine and the rawness of the sound!
Amassed 32 records in a month, all ranging from 3$-45$, mostly from marketplace, eBay, local record boutique and family gifts.
Best hobby ever!
Will probably sell one and keep the other, unless they're both worthless
I’ve always been fascinated with turntables since I saw this movie as a kid. It’s my dream to one day own something like this turntable but I know that it’s unattainable for me due to budget and availability. I don’t know much about this table but I’m fascinated by the design and would love to own one! Curious if money wasn’t an object what your dream turntable would be?
I see a lot of comments suggesting used/vintage gear instead of buying new. So that lead me on a bit of a quest to see if I can make a neglected vintage turntable sound just as good or better than my current more expensive table, the Project EVO2 w/ Blue Stylus).
I started off buying an old Vintage Thorens TD-166 MkII from a local estate sale for $220.
Took it home and tested it and it sounded like hot garbage. Replaced the belt, cleaned, oiled, replaced stock feet, and cartridge with At-VM95ML, which wasn’t at all easy with this table.
First I needed a special gauge for alignments since the screws from the bottom. Second, I needed specific screws to mount it. No one in my city had or country for that matter. Specifically metric M2 10mm length. Finally found and ordered through grainger. Now I can put everything together and test. Did about 1.92 tracking force.
Tested after cart install and alignment. Sounds very good. How does it compare? Sounds good, but is it significantly different or better than my Project? That I’m not sure. It was cheaper to put together. Also, keep in mind, this table is super sensitive to foot falls. I would have to wall mount it.
All in all, I think this was a good learning experience and maybe a vote for going vintage on the cheap, if you are willing to do the work.
The table itself was already in great condition, just no maintenance done in 50 yrs. If you go vintage, maybe don’t get one with a suspended table and a headshell with screws on the bottom. Be prepared for wall mounting it. That said, yes, I’m getting another Thorens in a few months and selling both the Project and 166.
Cost of Vintage: Table $220, belt $24, Cart $179, special cart gauge: $42, special screws $6= $471
Cost of New Project currently: $799, Blue Stylus $198= $997
So yes, one vote for giving vintage a try.
Hello all -
Appreciate in advance your insight & expertise. I'm looking for an automatic or semi-automatic turntable to upgrade from my very entry level AT LP-60x. It has served me well for getting into the hobby, but now that I'm more invested I'd like to step up to something more.
Primary priorities for me include:
Now that we have that out of the way, I'll tell you a little about my current setup. I'm not really looking to upgrade anything here any time soon as everything is new.
I'm not locked into a specific brand, so I'm open minded from that perspective. What I do not want to do is try the used route. I know that's a popular suggestion, but I just don't really have the time or inclination to search the marketplace only to end up with something that may need work. I also do NOT care about bluetooth capability.
My initial budget is probably around $600, though I could be willing to go a little higher if necessary. I know this price range may result in a somewhat "stock" cartridge to start, which is why I felt important to mention that I want something that is reasonably upgradeable.
Some of the options I've seen in this range:
Are one of these the play? Is there something I'm missing? Am I annoying you all with the millionth "What should I buy?" post? (I did read the guides, if that helps my cause.)
I'm open to any/all suggestions and feedback for my next step in this adventure.
Been looking at getting back into vinyl for a while now. Was surfing Facebook marketplace and found this Technics SL-230 in mint condition with an at-vm95e on it! The Edifiers we're on sale on Amazon at the same time so I pulled the trigger! I'm so happy that I did! I only have room in this little bedroom at the moment, so this setup is perfect for now!
I recently picked up an AR The Turntable for a decent price to keep as my studio deck (have Thorens at home). It is in fine working condition and It’s a great deck. However, the veneer has seen better days. In a few places, the veneer has chipped off and in other spots, the veneer has warped and is lifting off of the plinth.
Ultimately, not the biggest deal, but aesthetically I’d love to find some solution that returns this great deck to its fullest glory. Any ideas?
Thanks!!
Quite the journey, since looking for warm and cozy socks on Amazon and AI kept showing me Turntables. 🤣 So the the journey began.
Very precise and clean sounding. Yes, I’m selling it after 4 months. 😅
Song is from the first track of the Sidewinder LP by Lee Morgan. Very catchy.
found at a vintage shop for $50. the cartridge is a empire 888 se is it worth keeping on, or change it out? not to familiar with that brand.
Hello everybody! After my sad incident with Aiwa PX-E800(old man that was selling it gave me money back after he checked what happened to it) I am getting a new turntable
I know that the most recommended is Audio-Technica LP60X but not so long ago I found a FiiO TT13 within the same price range
It shares the same AT3600L cartridge, fully automatic, also have a remote controller and some LED lights(it isnt the point for me to buy it, but a pretty cool feature I think)
Does anybody knows something or own it who could share their own experience with it, or should I stick with LP60X
The project A1.2 just arrived and the plate and main unit where separate is this a fault? As it’s not turning on either? (And yes I have tried putting plate on but won’t turn on) Cheers
Hey, I was cleaning my turntable and scrubbing under the needle when I hit it. Now, I'm not sure if it's broken. I don't want to ruin my records.
if so is it possible to replace it on the sony turntables or even upgradeble?
I have the Sony PS-LX310BT
When the tonearm rests on the cradle, there is a constant buzzing sound if the turntable is turned on.. it is quite subtle but easy to notice
there is not any visible damage but this is something new that I have come across, is there any explanation for it?
I'm not very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, I'd like to hook this up and give it a spin but it might need some repair so I need to know what brand/model number this is. This is the only identifying information I could find unfortunately, there is also a parts number on the slipmat but it's for a Pioneer PLX-1000. Please help!
I have an old BUSH turntable that I inherited from my grandfather, any vinyls I play on it sound very distorted, I’m not sure if it’s off balance or if I can fix this in anyway. There isn’t any tone arm adjustment and when I looked inside I couldn’t see any mechanism that could be the issue. You can see in the video the left hand side is higher. Does anyone know anything that might help?
Hey all.
I’m in the market for a new pair of headphones after giving up on my DT 770 Pros, which I find too clinical and unforgiving.
Any good recommendations, ideally for an old vintage pair? Predominantly in use for turntable listening. Open/closed back are both fine.
My setup:
- Yamaha A-S3000
- Thorens TD 160 Super
- SME Series III
- Ortofon Black
Listening mostly to jazz, soul and funk.
Hi everyone! I bought my first turntable, an audio-technica AT-LP120XUSB. I have Adam D3V monitors. I connected them using a TS-RCA cable and switched the turntable to LINE, but when I turn it on, there's no sound. What did I do wrong?
