Soda Stereo - El Ultimo Concierto A Climbs 53 Points

I must admit, I'm fascinated by how RYM ranks things, forever trying to figure out what's going on under the hood. To help get a sense of how things change, I created a snapshot of the Top 5000 Albums of all Time chart around the end of March, which gives me somewhat of a glimpse of an album's changing ranking when I care to look.

Was looking through the 1001 - 2000 albums this afternoon, stumbling upon El Ultimo Concierto A, from an Argentine band I'd never heard of called Soda Stereo, which had, previously, ranked at 1,005. Was interested and pleasantly surprised to notice this record has performed rather well in the last month, garnering an additional 39 votes, resulting in a 4.09 with 465 rankings as of April 21.

One thing I found interesting is that, for one, 465 votes isn't very many. For another, it also indicates that live recordings are factored in with regular albums for the Top 5000. Thirdly, it's a humbling reminder that there are bands and musicians that are ENORMOUS that you might never even have heard of if you live in the United States. Finally, i feel like this live album's popularity might be reflective of a greater interest in Spanish-speaking music of all kinds in recent years, but I'd need a lot more data points to establish that trend.

Anyone else listen to this band? Follow-up question, what are some of the biggest jumps you've noticed or kept track of? Is there anyone else making their own charts like this?

RYM has an "unknown artist" under which every record whose artist isn't known is released, it's treated as a normal artist profile with it having listed genres, credits, and discography as if it was all made by one person

Glad to see Tape 05 ranking this high on the music video chart

Absolutely deserved. This is the most hyped I’ve ever been for an album rollout in my entire life.

Is RYM broken right now?

If I look up any specific thing, it will link to a different specific thing. For example, clicking on Isley Brothers links to 311, clicking on YWH Nailgun links to Pollyanna, and Deafheaven links to Butthole Surfers. Currently the site is unusable Is anyone else experiencing this?

Does RYM have a filter for excluding some releases from charting in scenes?

I was scrolling through Goodbye and Hello's release page and noticed it had "Greenwich Village Scene" added under the Scenes category. After I click on it and navigate to All Time Albums from that scene, this release isn't listed there whatsoever. Is there a certain importance the scene has to hold in the release's genres for it to classify or am I missing something? Thanks!

identifying/defining art pop

art pop has been genre that I have had hard time identifying or being able to attempt to create. Correct me if I am wrong, but from my current perception, i always thought it may be harder to identify because it doesn’t have a specific sound (I’ve heard it be defined as a fluid genre instead of an essentialist genre (genre characterized by very specific sound)), and that it’s seen by the way it interacts with other sounds or by making experimental music accesible (and vice versa). please let me know your thoughts, and if you’ve ever had a hard time identifying it; and if you did, what has allowed you to be able to? similar confusion goes for progressive pop/rock and art rock.

What's an effectively dead/stale genre you'd want to see have a revival of some sorts? Whether it be with younger generations or with a change in sound.

I.e. Space Rock Revival, Emo Revival, Post-Punk Revival, Garage Rock Revival

Why has Nirvana's "Nevermind" seen both massive score drops and rises in the same decade?

This kind of rating trend is pretty unprecedented on the website – once albums start trending downward they usually stay going downward! How did Nevermind recover so well, and even best its old score by a lot?

difference between rymcore and aotycore music

now, 90% of the time, music that is considered one of them, is also the other, however, I have seen some people try to mark a difference between the slight difference of music taste style of both websites (within the parameters of both being quite similar), what do you think is the difference between both of them?

I made a "Top 100" ranking list: Top 100 Highest Rated Songs from Low Rated Albums (anything with a 2.50 average or less) from RYM!

The list consists of the ranking of each song, the date, the album its linked to alongside some data, the average, the amount of ratings for the song, and a formula result.

Some notes/criteria of the list:

  1. The album must have a 2.50 average or less. Even albums with a 2.51 were not included on this list.

  2. The song must have at least 100 or more ratings

  3. All the data for the songs were based on their song page, which also determined its relation to the album. (This is why a song like witchblades is connected to the EVERYBODY'S EVERYTHING album despite technically being released earlier in a different project, which has a different page. This is also how a song like Kiss Me Thru The Phone wasn't eligible since it's connected to the single page, not to the "iSouljaBoyTellEm" project.)

  4. I used a formula made from a user on RYM to sort out the rankings. Basically it takes into account the popularity/ratings of a song more than just the average.

  5. This was made through the process of using the Popular filter on the charts and looking through every album with a 2.50 or less average and seeing if any songs had at least a 3.5 or above average. I stopped by the time I was looking through albums with 300 ratings where I figured there weren't gonna be any more songs with the necessary rating amount. Yes, that was a huge process and I'm sure there was probably an easier way to do this, but alas here we are lol.

Finally, some songs that barely missed the cut due to not being eligible to make it:

DJ Khaled - Nas Album Done (Song had a 3.78/5.00 average but only had 99 ratings)

Jennifer Lopez - Love Don't Cost a Thing (Song had a 3.69/5.00 but only had 98 ratings)

Nickelback - Feed the Machine (Song had a 3.59/5.00 with 119 ratings, but the album had a 2.51. I know, I was stingy about this lol)

Is there any way to see the top 5,000-10,000 albums by user ratings?

On the website you are unable to see past album #5000. Whenever I’m looking to discover more albums, I will pick a random number between 1 and 5,000 and listen to whichever album, but I don’t want to be limited to just the top 5,000.

Back in 2024 a user posted a collage of all 10,000 albums at the time, but they never got back to other users asking how they accessed them.

AN ALTERNATIVE:

Alternatively, I would like to know if there is a way to go directly to the page of any album in the top 10,000. Like a tool where you can put the number in and it takes you straight to the page of the album.

Any info helps. Thanks!

Bloodhound Gang appreciation (kind of)

I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen them being discussed on a website such as rym. Being kind of a novelty act might explain this but you can‘t the deny they (at least in Europe) had a string of pretty big hits. Fire Water Burn, The Bad Touch & Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo all got a lot of exposure and are in their way pretty great tunes I think. Also shoutouts to Along Comes Mary, The Ballad of Chasey Lain & Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss Uhn Thiss.

That‘s quite an impressive run of big hits. How is their reputation in your country? What are other artists with a similiar status? Imo they hold a really unique place and are one of those acts I really kind of forget exists sometimes.
