Fun classes for new(ish) players

New ish cause ive played a tiny bit of Deadfire and the OG. Far enough to get a full squad in each to remain spoiler free in post. I want to come back to it, I just dont know what character I want.

I know a little. I'm planning on being an Orlan and will be a "good guy" or as good as I can. I was thinking about rogue because I remember lacking one in my party but I did a little searching on here and it seemd like rogues are not best for new players.

I dont know if it matters, I dont know how many companions/followers there are in game. But im interested in Edèr, Durance, and a certain Dwarf Ranger ive never actually met but her character art is cool and so I'd like her in the party. Again dont know if that matters but figured I'd throw it out there.

[PoE1] Does turn based make Dexterity speed bonus less impactful?

Looking to jump back into the game and try out turn based mode. But I'm wondering if turn based has a diminishing impact on the importance of Dexterity for the Action Speed bonus. I understand it results in a higher initiative at the start of combat, but if I'm now limited to a single action per round, is there any point in taking Dex for speed? Will I get more turns in a combat encounter?

Thanks for any clarification you can provide.

Deadfire stuttering

I've been getting pretty bad stutters while playing the game, like it freezes for less than half a sec pretty frequently (10-15ish seconds?), it occurs even when there's nothing going on in the game. It was at it's worst in fort deadlight.

I've tried quite a few proposed fixes: reduced core usage to 4 via task manager, fiddled with nvidia panel settings and game settings, disabled msaa in registry, tried launch commands like -force-d3d11 -window-mode exclusive, capped fps, stopped using in-game 2x speed, stopped alt-tabbing, and probably way more, but nothing seems to help. Game's also installed on nvme.

I've got a pretty good pc (3070ti, 9800x3d, 32gb 6000mhz ram) and every other game works perfectly fine, so it's probably not a hardware issue.

I'd appreciate any tips.

Combat Tips for noobie?

Hello community. About a month ago I made a post here asking for advice on building a spellsword. Ive since started my playthrough and found i am having a really hard time grasping the combat.

Last night I hit my breaking point on the Cail the Silent boss fight. In disgrace, I could not even best him on easy and had to change the game to story mode so I could finish and get some sleep.

This has been only one of the myriad of challenges ive had with combat thus far. On easy mode to boot, the drakes leading up to this all gave me a run for my money.

I just want to know what am i not getting? Im still pretty nooby with crpgs. Have only finished BG3, DOS2, and Rogue trader and faired pretty decently on the normal modes.

Its just with this I don't really understand, everything feels like it ends up in a clusterf*** no matter how I try to position. If someone gets in my face I dont know a safe way to disengage my character without the enemy just auto following me to hit more. Against Cail the Silent I had no way to know when he was gonna do his fireball and even when I could see the visual icon trying to move my characters to dodge was pointless and they were instakilled one by one.

As for my character build I thought I did pretty okay. I didnt use a guide but I went with melee wizard and figured id be pretty squishy by default so ive been focusing on self buffs. Im level 7. Primarily use spirit shield, infuse with vital essence, arcane veil, parasitic staff, and some various touch damage spells along with whatever ome hand weapon looks cool with a small shield for flavor.

Long story short I think I need some advice. Maybe a guide video someone can reference? I'm just not sure what I'm missing, or is this game supposed to be this brutal even on easy?

Tldr; I suck at this games combat, how do I get good?

Recently started Avowed and I really like it

I'm a big POE and Deadfire fan, bought both games at launch and did the same with Avowed even though I was a bit skeptical of it being an FRPG, like many others. My PC died right after getting it though and replacing it was a low priority so I didn't get a chance to play it until the past month. I've played for around 40 hours now and I've enjoyed it a lot. Yes it's not POE or Deadfire but it's a fun game, has a good story, and I love getting a chance to be in Eora again. Feels like it only got hated on because it wasn't a different game.

It looks like it mostly impacts turn based mode but im really happy about these updates:

•Free action abilities will now indicate when the free action has already been used for the turn.

•Traps with ticking behavior should now work properly in TBM.

•Fixed an issue where firearm reload animation would trigger after using a free action, instead of waiting until end of turn.

Just in time for my 3rd playthrough.

I don't want to pick attack every turn, I don't want to press a bumper for every time i attack, I don't want to hold attack then reload then attack for 100hrs. Loved avowed, liked outer worlds 2 and turn based dead fire. I just want my characters to swing their swords by themselves so I can focus on what makes the game unique.

Wish obsidian would double down (against all market research and evidence) on real time with pause.

It would mean giving up on the kind of multiplayer experience that makes larian games world leading but there are other unique ways players could interact with each other with RTwP. Would have loved an option for players to create bandit, pirate or goldpact groups with their own automation to appear semi-randomly in other players games as part of a trial of Magran. Would be the trial of Hylea as it would encourage creativity.

I've bonded with the sidekicks more than the main party members in PoE2 just because of how the game makes you recruit them out of the blue

Konstanten is the best example here, at first he looks like a random ass NPC in a brothel you can pay for services but when you delve into his personal feelings about the job you find out he's just really bored and wants more excitement.

That's reason enough for you to recruit him into the team but what got me was you're not putting him in the crew to work on your ship. You're putting him on the front lines as a full fledged party member. My jaw literally dropped when I found this out and he's been one of my favorites on the team since then.

(Had a similar experience with Grieving Mother in the previous game. "Oh, this grieving mother might have a quest for me. Wait, why is her backstory so detailed? Why is she asking to join my pa--SHE'S A PLAYABLE CHARACTER!?!?")

I don't know why but I absolutely love this about the game. Also Konstanten is best bro

Could do with help on how to approach deadfire

I'm just wondering what to do to get the most enjoyment out of the game. Should I make a char with a specific faction in mind (or none at all) and ONLY do quests for that faction? Should I do everything I can, or really limit myself based on choices? Like there's an island you have to visit (was it tikawara?) and you're greeted by a VTC guy (right?). If I was really leaning Into the principi side of things could I just walk away from him and not bother with what he has to say?

What I struggle with (perhaps my brain is too smooth) is the length of the main quest, and feeling railroaded into it. Is it better to approach the game like a sandbox and put the MQ off until much later? Even after the dlcs? I haven't got a clue.

I'm pretty sure the answer will be "NO". but hear me out.

So, I'm back into this game after 10+ years and I'm finding combat overwhelmingly frustrating. Let me explain.

On one hand, the Cleric-style Durance has amazing buffs, but most fights end up too fast to really matter. In the end, I never know when to cast and when not to. If I cast Armor of faith to the group, it would probably have just end up sooner if I just stright hit with a staff or something... and I end up eating my spell slots way too fast. But also, I don't see an easy, safe and useful auto attack as for having him do something else instead.

On the other hand, both my own character as well as Aloth are wizard and have amazing spells (mostly AOE), but the delay in between casting mens almos always one of two things: There will be no one in the AOE when the spell is finally cast, or my wizard will be targeted and killed before he's able to cast it.

On the other hand, fighters seem to be super reliable.

Also, most debuffs (beside being very hard to land) seem to last very few (aka: only one) turns.

Yeah, sure, I'm still low-level, but I don't forsee the AOE issue to improve in the future.

Note that I'm playing turn-based mode, on Normal difficulty, and I have still to see other classes.

Any advice will be appreciated.
