The Secret World of Roald Dahl

Has anyone here listened to The Secret World of Roald Dahl? I just binged it and had some mixed feelings, and wanted to hear what others thoughts.

First off, IMO, cheers to the producer. I was very engaged, appreciated the research and writing, and it’s clear he had a lot of passion for the topic. Definite talent there, no question. I’m curious to hear more of his work.

But…I also feel like the podcast promised one thing and broke its initial agreement with the audience as episodes passed. As the show went on, the producer kept fitting in little personal reflections and anecdotes, and suddenly the biography became sort of a bio-opinion, which wasn’t what I personally wanted. Eventually the series gets to the topic of Dahl’s antisemitism. And while that’s important to address, the show abandons the narrative it set in favor of what felt like a type of cultural commentary you get on social media or on a different type of show altogether. I really wish the producer had considered those segments as bonus episodes and stuck with the format he’d established.

Lastly, I know we’re all negotiating with AI in ways, but hiring an AI voice artist to read Dahl - which seemed to be cleverly worded so that some listeners wouldn’t realize it - was a bit disappointing. I’m sure a network show like this could afford $250 to get a decent actor for the day. The irony stings when the producer bemoans AI replacing his craft (writing) in the final episode.

So yeah…a lot I appreciated, some stuff I didn’t. I think I feel strongly because the show had a lot going for it, which can sometimes cut a little deeper than stuff you don’t care for at all.

Need a political/current affairs debate podcast with actually intelligent arguments from both sides

The majority of political discourse I see online usually is just propaganda for one side making the other look bad. Are there any that actually provide meaningful takes from both sides of the spectrum?

Really niche, but any podcasts to support family members through my incurable cancer

As the title suggests, I am looking for any podcast recommendations to help support my family as I am getting progressively worse. Please, I am begging for anything that you have come across. So far I myself have been fine with the whole ordeal, but my usual dark humour is no longer cutting it as things get worse. I have only been able to find podcasts related to helping the patient themselves, but we are an exceptionally close fandamily, and they are my WORLD. Absolutely anything that can help me help them would be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Advice Column Podcast?

I’m looking for funny advice column podcasts where the content revolves around people submitting various questions/problems and the host either gives them real or ridiculous advice. I don’t care as long as it’s funny. I’m either looking for a podcast that has a recurring segment like this, or a podcast that is entirely built on this concept!

Excessive audio use?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/home/2026/04/19/excessive-audio-use-addictive-screen-time/

After reading the article* at the link, I realize I don't really sit in silence anymore. I listen to podcasts while walking my dog, driving, exercising, folding laundry, cleaning, and also, sadly, going to sleep. I 100% use podcasts as a way to motivate me to do anything I find even slightly boring or tedious.

It really feels like an excessive habit that's maybe addiction-adjacent. It's not overtly harmful, but I can't see how it wouldn't affect creative thinking or healthy rumination. Curious to hear the thoughts of fellow podcast listeners.

* Apologies if you hit a paywall - I couldn't post a gift link because it utilizes a URL shortener which is not allowed.

"I want to find another show like ___(fill in the blank)___."

Hi everyone! I often see people saying, "I want to find another show like ___(fill in the blank)___."

Tip: Bookmark rephonic.com/graph. If you type in a show you like, it brings up this cool map of that podcast's galaxy or neighborhood, using Apple data to show you what else listeners of that show are listening to. I use it all the time! It's free.

(I don't work for them or anything, just love the site.)

How many shows do people listen to?

I have 34 shows in my podcast feed that I listen to. Some are daily, some weekly, some in between ranging from 5 minutes to 3 hours for each episode. Even though I’m busy listening to 34 different shows, I’m always looking for new shows to listen to. Do I have a problem or am I normal? Is 34 a lot or not many? Just curious to see how many shows everyone listens to and what is considered normal

Best podcast on AI. News, business, developments

I'm looking for something at about a weekly cadence, an hour or so in length. Not too scripted or corporate in feel. Any suggestions?

Why are Podcasts and Podcasting so popular among Republicans and Conservatives?

One of the top most listened podcast on Spotify Podcast Chart is a republican podcast (The Tucker Carlson Show) and there's also so many republican podcasters like Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro. The Joe Rogan Experience (I know he's not fully republican politics podcast) is popular among conservatives and republicans. Why is this?

podcasts to really laugh at out loud

i always need podcasts on while i'm getting chores done, and would really like more that make me laugh. it seems like a lot of "comedy" podcasts now rely more on vibes and repeated catchphrases than jokes with a setup and payoff, and i would like to find more where they're making actual observations and jokes.

i last lol'd at the maintenance phase/if books could kill crossover episode (so i'm aware of all the hosts' related podcasts). i always appreciate punching up, especially when it comes to grifters.

i like parody true crime when it's done well - i really liked this sounds serious & murder on sex island. wasn't too keen on valley heat. i'm subscribed to scam goddess, though not as into it as i used to be. i like how did this get made, though i skip episodes where i'm not interested in the movie.

things i'd prefer to avoid: poor sound quality, live episodes, yelling, bigoted jokes, 3 bros talking over each other, real true crime, "horrible history" (eg BTB, this guy sucks), improv, video content, excessive ad breaks. no mcelroys, please.

thanks for any suggestions!!

Anyone else rely heavily on the jump ahead/skip feature for podcasts?

So this might be a weird thing to fixate on but hear me out.

I've been a YouTube Premium subscriber for like 3 years now, and honestly one of the features i use most isn't the ad-free stuff (though that's nice obviously), it's the jump forward button. You know how some episodes have that 10-15 minute intro, or they go on a tangent about their sponsor's mattress for the fifth time? Being able to just skip ahead to the actual content has genuinely changed how i consume stuff. I didn't realize how much i relied on it until i tried going back to regular podcast apps.

The thing is, most dedicated podcast players don't really have anything like this? Like yeah you get the 15 second skip button but that's not what i mean. I'm talking about intelligently jumping to the next topic or segment, not just scrubbing forward blindly and hoping you land somewhere good.

I've been messing around with different apps trying to find something that does jump ahead for podcasts the way YouTube handles it for video, and honestly most of them just... don't. Pocket Casts, Overcast, even Spotif, they all have the basic skip but nothing smart about it.

Then last week i stumbled on this app called Podtastic that actually does topic highlighting, so you can see what segments are in an episode and jump between them. First time i've found something that scratches that same itch as the YouTube feature. It's not perfect, sometimes the topic detection is a little off, especially on more conversational pods where they jump around a lot, but it's the closest thing i've found.

Am i the only one who cares about this? Like i feel like for longer episodes (2+ hours, looking at you JRE and Huberman) being able to skip to specific topics is almost essential. I genuinely don't understand why more apps haven't figured this out yet.

What do you all use for navigating longer episodes? Do you just suffer through or do you have a system?

Any good podcasts for news that isn't just politics or one hr of bitching about trump?

I am sadly lacking in keeping up on news but I am picky and dont have the patience or gut to handle a one hour daily take on everything trump does.

I need to get in and learn the cogs that are turning and whoes turning them besides trump and I want it in like bullet point format. A car ride, not an hour+.

I did cnn5 things but even they turned into what felt like a daily 'this is what trump did' and its scope and breadth wasn't wide enough. There were more and other things going on than that.

Ideally it'd be cool to get some business news with some general news and some smooshing of politics in there on the bigger gears turning. Like someplace that has views of the bigger picture than just reactionary news reporting.

I dont know if such a thing exists but if anyone has suggestions I am open to hearing them.

Thank you.

how do creators research true crime cases?

i have been a true crime podcast listener for the last 5-6 years and although i’ve listened to and watched multiple podcasts, creators and documentaries, i still don’t understand how they research their cases in such depth.

although i do agree, a part of it comes from requesting the police directly for the original court documents and that there’s usually a whole team of researchers, where are other places to get information from? just googling? finding the public case records?
