The wedding reception centerpieces featured betta fish. The bride and groom planned to flush them alive.

Years ago, my coworker attended a wedding at which the reception dinner tables featured live betta fish in small bowls as part of the centerpiece. While chatting with the bride at the end of the evening, my coworker asked what they were going to do with all the fish. The plan was to flush them all down the toilet alive. My coworker immediately said no need for that and insisted on taking them all home.

That Monday she came to work and asked who wanted to adopt a betta fish. That was my first betta who I jokingly called my “rescue betta.” She lived for almost five years.

The wine glass was only her home for less than a day before I got her five gallon tank set up so please no betta lovers yell at me! I'm one of you!

Make it stop, please

We have had way too many people come in today wanting comets as specially party favors today. 1 person managed to get 20 that she put in a vase that didn't even look like 1 gallon, and some already died off. She wanted to exchange them and got really mad when I told her the feeder policy. That's when she said they were party favors.... I don't know who sold her those fish, but I'm literally going to start crying if one more person comes in wanting "party favor fish"

Long line at the till

Gotta absolutely love when the line is getting long and I call for backup, but nobody comes up even though I called 3 fucking times, until someone finally came up! Stop chitchatting and do your fucking job! They were right there when I said it over the headset too. Call that incompetent. This job continues to test my patience every shift.

Absolutely ridiculous. Petsmart really wants people to quit.

I will be rescheduling any online bookings. You can take the $6.65 for a groomer before tax and shove it

Nail trims

Aren't managers in the store also supposed to do nail trims and baths? Our managers lately have been telling people they can come whenever they want and won't have to wait to get a nail trim. Even on days when we all have 6+ dogs and already have nail trims booked.

I'm lucky if I get a break and often have to stay an hour past my shift to get everything done. We have 2 full time stylists, 2 SITs which we are responsible for watching and one part time bather all booked out 2 weeks. No salon lead.

God I'm getting tired of this place.

the result of overworked and undertrained associates...

had this SFS returned to our store. customer received it with decor broken, bag of sand ripped, multiple items missing, and absolutely no packing paper included.

i know it's not our store because we don't even carry that bag of sand, so my initial thought was, "wow, whatever petsmart this came from needs to do better."

and yeah, adding a little packing paper wouldn't have hurt. but upon reflection, i can only imagine the negligence is directly because of a lack of time, a lack of training, and a blissful ignorance that the items would arrive safely. i wish i could say "do better" without feeling a bit of guilt behind it.

Breaks

What is the break schedule past 5 hours? I should've taken a screen shot or wrote it down when I did my onboarding but I didn't and now I've forgotten. Thanks.

Autoship

So recently my mangers has told me to start doing autoship in addition to activations (ugh 😒), and I don’t do it mainly because I know people are going to get annoyed with or won’t care enough to do it.

What are some tips to tell people about autoship/how to get more numbers? (my manager is making me get 500 in one day, which is insanely CRAZY)

Lights on all night?

I hate that our new store leader leaves on the floor lights all night. I feel bad for the pets on the sales floor. Our old leader would cut off the lights at the end of the day. Is there a way to submit a request for the lights to be off at night?

Only a small portion of a shipping order arrived?

Hello! A ship-to-me order arrived last night (9am, I wake up at 6am so didn't have time to open it before bed) and only one of the 8 lights I ordered, and none of the hides, arrived? There aren't any other boxes.

Just trying to see how common this is, I've never ordered online before and this is honestly ridiculous. I'll be calling customer service when I have a chance, but come on lol

Make it stop!!

I wanted to punch my mother so hard tonight.

While I was making dinner, she asked "Is it Pet Smart? Or Pets Mart?"

Imagine someone shooting laser beams from their eyes. That was me.

I showed her *that* video. She may have peed a little, lol.

Bathers/groomers- How long did it take for you to feel competent?

I just started as a bather and have worked 4 five hour shifts in the salon. I did the computer training but was kind of thrown onto the floor because we are short-staffed. My lead and the other groomers have been super helpful and pretty patient with me, but I’m already getting booked my own dogs and I feel like I never really got trained.

I’m struggling pretty badly with nails, both the clipping and the grinding. I’m really scared of hurting a dog so it takes me forever to do the clipping. With the dremel, I’m mostly struggling with figuring out how to hold it correctly and keep it steady on the nails. I had a nail grind today and the dog got really impatient with me so I had to get someone to help me finish it :( I feel really stupid because I haven’t figured it out yet!

Bathing and drying have both been fine since they’re pretty self-explanatory. I enjoy my coworkers and the dogs so I really want to keep trying, but I’m feeling pretty discouraged about nails especially.

How long did it take you guys to feel confident and like you knew what you were doing? Especially with nails

It feels like a humiliation ritual at this point

Despite rampant understaffing, the expectations keep becoming more absurd and out of touch.

Everyone knows about the sign ups, activations, puppy guides, autoship, ATS, and more. Now we are supposed to COLD CALL customers and beg them to come to our events. The same customers we harass in store are now getting what are essentially spam calls from us too.

It reeks of desparation and honestly if they start regularly expecting us to cold call customers to beg them to come in, i wouldnt blame people for wanting their account/information deleted and not giving us their business. Not a single customer called today was interested and a couple were very irritated by the call.

Information needed

I had a negative experience with a co-worker the other day and I'm seriously considering reporting them to my SL.

If y'all can help with contacts, phone numbers, emails, etc. for HR or anyone else at the corporate level I should report this to should this not go against me and I end up fired, I would very grateful.

Thanks!

Fur matting

As a groomer, what do you consider excessive matting, minimal or minor matting and when do you refuse service for matting?

Fish count

I’m curious, who handles your fish count? I've been going for two years. I’m not a manager, but because I work the day after the fish truck, my SL usually has me doing it, while also generally expecting me to open Petcare, still answer Petcare requests, do deep cleans, and so on. Usually, while she’s off doing some reset, barely answering the walkie sometimes. I’m starting to plan to do half at most and leave the other half for the night manager, but it’s been making me think since it feels more like a management task versus a petcare associates task, especially given how long it takes.

Accidentally dropped a bag of 30 large crickets today (it stayed closed thankfully), I still felt really bad though.

How bad of a mess up is this? It's only my second week and this was probably my second time bagging crickets for a customer. As soon as I was handing off the bag to a customer, and it seemed like they had the bag in their possession it just fell to the floor. Luckily none of the crickets escaped but they are still living creatures and I felt bad having dropped them, and one of the managers saw it happen. I think the customer might have been a doordasher who is antsy around the crickets maybe? But it was still my fault for letting go if the bag wasn't securely in their grip. How bad of a mess up is this you think?
