Squad Up-Split the Night (feedback)

At its core, Squad Up is a social utility app designed to kill the "awkward money talk" that happens after a night out. It’s built specifically for college students and friend groups who are tired of losing track of who paid for what.

Think of it as the "Nightlife Version" of a bill splitter—it’s designed to be used while you’re moving between Ubers and bars, not sitting at a desk

How It Works (The 3-Step Flow)

  1. Start the Night: One person creates a "Squad" for the night. Everyone else joins via a quick link or code.
  2. Track as You Go: Whenever someone pays for an Uber, a round of drinks, or a late-night pizza, they log it in the app. The UI is high-contrast and "drunk-friendly" with big buttons so you can do it in 5 seconds at a loud bar.
  3. The "Morning After" Payout: At the end of the night (or the next morning), the app does the "Drunk Math." It shows exactly who owes what.
    • The Killer Feature: It has integrated Venmo links. You don't have to search for your friend's username; you just tap their name in Squad Up, and it launches your Venmo app directly to their profile to pay.

How to keep kids entertained at a birthday party without screens (what actually works by age)

I recently went down a rabbit hole of child development research to figure out how to actually pull off screen-free activities without the screens and maximum entertainment for the kids. Here is what the data suggests works best.

The Math: 2 to 5 minutes per year of age The biggest factor is attention span. A standard rule of thumb in child development is about 2–5 minutes per year of age. So a 6-year-old is realistically good for maybe 12–18 minutes before they check out. Most party activities fail because they try to stretch way past that. The fix is breaking things into shorter chunks and rotating.

Ages 3–5: Keep it moving Anything that requires everyone to sit and follow along is hit or miss. Setting up a couple of simple stations and letting them move between them works much better. Coloring pages are surprisingly effective—studies actually highlight them for providing a calming effect that helps settle a younger group down.

Ages 6–8: Structure with choices Structure helps, but they still get bored quickly. Having a mix of simple printables (coloring, mazes, word searches) and then alternating with something active like freeze dance is the sweet spot. The key is giving them options so if they lose interest in one thing, they can switch without needing an adult's help.

Ages 9–10: Give them a challenge The dynamic flips completely here. Older kids are way more engaged when things feel like a challenge. Harder puzzles and small team competitions keep them focused a lot longer.

The "Station" Setup The most reliable setup overall is utilizing activity stations. That alone solves most of the “what do we do next?” chaos:

  • Station 1: Printables (coloring, puzzles, mazes)
  • Station 2: Hands-on (cookie decorating, play-doh, etc.)
  • Station 3: Active (obstacle course, bean bag toss)

Honestly, the most annoying part of this approach isn't managing the kids, it's putting the materials together. Finding decent printable activities that actually match a specific theme takes way too long.

Curious what’s worked for other people, especially with mixed age groups!

I'll share the full blog post with sources in the comments for anyone interested.

28th Birthday Slumber Dance Party

Hi All!

I'm hosting a party at my apartment for the first time and I wanted to get some advice and ideas! The space is medium/ feels small at 950 sqft(i think???): two bedroom, one smaller than the other, one small bathroom, and a narrow kitchen with a small dining space, and the living room is right at the front door. Kitchen dining and living room are basically all the same space, there is just a half wall where the sink/counterspace is between the kitchen and living room. My apartment can feel crowded with only three people lol so I was thinking I would have all of the rooms available with different things to do.

The theme is Slumber Party so everyone will be in pjs and my friend is gonna DJ. I was thinking either my living room or the smaller room straight back would be where he's got his dj and speaker set up. I was thinking maybe having him in the living room would be too overwhelming by the entrance/kitchen/food? but the living room was supposed to be the dance floor so idk? Maybe it still can be but the DJ is in the back? What do you think?

I'll have drinks in the kitchen, and push the lil breakfast table back to make more room for chairs and standing. My friend is gonna make a signature drink. I'm thinking food will either be on the table or in the kitchen? My friend is going to do face paint and maybe stick & poke tattoos so they may want the table. Or they could be the one in the back room with crafts and games?

To make more space I can put a blanket over my bed so people can sit on it, create cozy seating on the floor, maybe even have a blow up mattress somewhere since it matches the theme?? or if that takes up too much room I could use the pull out couch in the back room as another cozy bed (kinda like that Bed Club in one episode of sex & the city! S6, E7)

Some other ideas for things to do: I'll have a projector in my bedroom playing a movie, an area with crafts/games, some temporary tattoos people can use.

For decor I'm gonna add CLUB SLUMBER to my front door so people see it when they arrive, lay sheets on the couch and have lots of pillows. And I'm definitely on a budget so I'm gonna try to find some cheap decorations to hang up with stars and stuff like that. And I'm gonna put up poster sized paper for people to draw a doodle of themselves and maybe another one that says "28 things we love about the birthday girl:" I was thinking of having a good amount of candles but not where it would take up too much space for people.

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys had another other ideas for decorating, games, layout, etc? I'm also feeling overwhelmed about having so many people over and was wondering if you have any advise about hosting your own party in general, but also in a smaller space. And I'm going to tell my neighbors im having a party and that it will probably be loud, any have advice on how to go about this?

Thanks in advance!

Conspiracy theory brunch

Well Hello hope the picture help grab your attention! I’m hosting a conspiracy theory brunch for my 28th birthday! And I need your help to come up with ideas for food and decor cause I’m good at making up themes but never good at actually making them come alive!! This time I mean business!!!!

I have the now till the end of august to plan and buy!

So my budget can be adjusted accordingly for decor cause I can buy as I go / thrift shop/ build & craft my ideas!

Food wise I’d get a couple days before and I’d say around a 250/300$ budget as I plan to invite about 20/25 people and that seems reasonable ish to me to spend on a big party (please tell me if not)

This is the first time I’m really going all out for a party theme!

Well anyway thank you for reading if you have any suggestions, ideas, or tips for either the party itself or the theme please leave them below and I hope you enjoy your party too!!

Do you account for kids at a birthday party whose parents haven’t RSVP’d?

Backstory is, my (33 F) daughter goes to daycare 3 days a week. I drop her off and pick her up early and haven’t really formally met any other parents of the other kids. We’re having her 3rd birthday party and she wanted to invite a few girls from her class. I briefly spoke to one mom at drop off and mentioned my daughter wanted to invite her daughter and she seemed so nice and excited saying she’d love that. I left invites at school for their parents a month ahead of time just to give time for us to talk or possibly meet before they come if necessary. I was told they were picked up. I left my number on the invite to RSVP, and now a week before her party I haven’t received any word from any of the parents. Everyone is saying no one rsvps to parties, but I always do. Do I just expect them to not show up, or do I take them into account just incase they do? My thing is, I’ve never met the parents so I can see how they would be uncomfortable coming, but personally I would send a quick “sorry we can’t make it” message just to be nice. I also assumed they would text to get to know me if they did want their kids to come. Just not sure if I’m in the wrong for inviting them without meeting the parents. Do I just assume they’re not coming?

Combining baby’s 1st and husbands 40th summer birthdays?

Hi, Thinking of combining my daughters 1st + my husbands 40th birthday parties. Looking for decor and/or theme ideas that incorporate both of them?

This will be early summer, close to 4th of July but don’t want to do American theme since we’ll be attending a party with that theme the next week. We will hopefully be outside in our backyard. I plan to rent tents (my husband has wayyyy too many friends).

For my daughter - Will start late afternoon for close family (parents siblings nieces nephews) and MAYBE a few friends and their kids? TBD. Then thinking my husbands friends join early evening, we do a cake / sing to both, then baby girl goes to bed, and nieces/nephews get taken home and babysat by in laws so party can switch to fun time with friends for my husband?

Expected to rain at an outdoor party

I’m writing on behalf of my friend who is throwing a party for their bday this weekend, but it’s supposed to rain (85% chance). The party is taking place at a park and expecting close to 30-35 people. What are some alternatives or ideas that you all can share to accommodate the guests and make the party enjoyable? Is it worth keeping the party planned day of and providing shelter? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

18th Birthday for Homie

So a little about us: we’re actually not many, max 4 people, and we want to do a surprise for our friend. He’s turning 18 and we’re all still 17. My idea was to go to Prague and do a few things that teenagers usually do. It should be something he won’t easily forget in his life. One idea was also to give him a doll as a gift 😂, but yeah.

We’re open to anything, so feel free to throw out ideas.
Thanks in advance!

ShareDay - easy events

I’ve got four kids, and honestly, organising anything used to be chaos.

Between chasing RSVPs, group chats going everywhere, and trying to remember who’s actually coming… it was more stressful than the event itself.

That’s exactly why I built ShareDay.

I wanted something simple. Create an event, send a link, and have everything just work. Now I can see who’s viewed the invite, who’s replied, and send reminders without chasing people.

It’s not just RSVPs either. There’s a seating planner, QR code invitations, printable seating charts, a guestbook, and a photo gallery so all the memories are in one place.

Includes optional gift registry, event schedule, check lists, auto reminders, manual SMS/email reminders, custom RSVP questions, auto day-after guest feedback, and more. Fully customizable.

It’s made for busy parents like me who just want things to run smoothly without the admin headache. Mainly aimed at Kiwi parents. She’s been running for a few months now.

Plan it once. Let ShareDay handle the rest.

Try it at ShareDay.nz - free.

I can see there are a few similar apps around, all unique.

I’d be keen to hear your feedback.

Ideas for a pirate themed barhop bingo.

Hello :)

I'm hosting a pirate themed barhop for my birthday in a few weeks. Bouncing around town through my favorite bars all dressed as pirates! I want to create a bingo with a $75 prize, but I'm struggling to fill all the squares. I would like each square to be either pirate themed or things you could typically encounter during a bar excursion.

Some examples I have so far: Sing a shanty; Get a number; Win an arm wrestle; Buy me a drink. Please give me suggestions! Thanks.

Party games for my party (34F) that maybe hit the theme (light and color), if possible!

I just need ideas. My birthday party is Saturday, April 11, and food and decor is planned and awesome, but I'm struggling with party game ideas.

It'll be a small gathering, about 20-24 people, all adults. No alcohol involved (unless people BYOB, which I don't care about).

The theme is "light and color," so food will be light colorful foods (charcuterie, sushi, fruit skewers, sandwiches).

We're going to have a disco ball, lots of colorful decoration, glow-in-the-dark and iridescent decorations, uranium glass and other UV-reactive decor, bubbles, lava lamps. Just lots of ways light and color will be represented throughout the decor and food that is aligned to the theme. Music videos will be playing on a projector for the music, so the light/color element is present in every portion of the party.

Guests are asked to dress colorful and come ready to shine.

Now where I'm stuck is with games. I don't really know what we should do. I don't know if I should make it very close to the theme or not.
I helped plan/emcee my sister's 30th birthday party that was emo-themed, and the games were "Finish the Emo Lyrics," "Is it a tumblr post or emo song?" image guessing game, and a "Myspace top 8" where they voted on different guests most likely to do different things.

Open to any suggestions, and all are greatly appreciated!

I'm building an app that replaces your chaotic group chat when making plans with friends

Hey everyone — I've been working on something called Beach Day and wanted to share it here to see if this resonates with anyone.

The problem:
Every time my friends and I try to plan a day out, it turns into 30+ texts, lost reservation links, and someone always asking "wait what's the plan?" right before we leave. Then afterward, you're chasing people on Venmo for two weeks.

What Beach Day does:
It's one app that handles the entire flow of planning a day with your crew:

  • Full day itineraries — plan every stop from brunch to sunset, not just one event
  • One invite link — friends see the plan, RSVP, and they're in
  • Book restaurants in-app — no more switching to OpenTable or Resy
  • Snap & split the bill — photo the receipt, split it, send payment requests right there
  • Gentle nudges — reminders before each stop so nobody's the late friend

Think of it as if Google Calendar, Splitwise, and OpenTable had a baby designed for friend groups.

Where we're at:
We're launching this summer and currently building our waitlist. Over 1,400 people have signed up so far.

I'd love to hear:

  1. Does this solve a real problem for you?
  2. What features would make you actually switch from group chats?
  3. Would you pay for something like this, or does it need to be free?

Last-minute cupcake topper ideas for an 8-year-old birthday (DIY or store options)

Hi everyone,

I thought I had everything planned for my daughter’s 8th birthday, but somehow cupcakes turned into a last-minute addition. Her birthday is in two days, so now I’m trying to pull something together quickly that still feels fun and special for her.

I’m keeping the cupcakes simple, but I’d really like to make them look a bit more exciting with cute toppers. I’m open to anything that’s quick and easy, whether that’s something I can make at home with basic supplies, print out and cut, or just grab from a nearby store like Target, Walmart, or Michaels. If there are any themes that tend to be a hit with kids around this age, I’d love to hear those too.

I’m in North Carolina, so anything easy to find locally would really help. Just trying to make them look nice without spending hours on it at the last minute. Thanks so much!

Looking for activity ideas for a home birthday party

I'm pregnant, so I won't be drinking any alcohol or allowing any weed use at my place (just because I want to keep it smoke free)

What are some activities my friends and I could do (youngest is 19, eldest is 22) that is actually entertaining and doesn't cost a human soul?

Things like kahoot with a prize, or something. If it's something that involves a prize, what are some ideas for those as well?

The general theme of the party is cookies, i'm addicted to baking cookies and everyone loves eating cookies - so it's a cookie party.

My birthday is in 6 days and the party in 5 so haha.. very last minute
