Here are my thoughts on a very popular push to repeal Prop 13. Help give me some thoughtful reasons why this doomsday thinking is incorrect.

It would forces thousands of businesses to either raise prices or shut down.

It would force millions of homeowners to sell their homes and most likely leave the state.

This would cause a mega-stagflation type of event and would torpedo the California economy.

The local dive bar that’s been around for 40 years, will now have to charge $20 for a drink that currently costs $6 to make up for paying property taxes.

Flower shops, local grocery and hardware stores, the same thing…

Many businesses will need to sell or close.

Rent will increase substantially on both businesses and residential properties.

Grandma that bought a home in 1975, will now need to move (most likely out of state). Young buyers from 2010, will either need to sell and move, or restrict many discretionary purchases so that they can pay taxes.

Both selling and moving, or eliminating spending on anything but utilities, mortgage, and taxes, along with essential needs will damage the economy immensely.

This is a bad combo of items becoming more expensive, housing prices dropping off a cliff for a short period of time, until out of staters or foreign investors begin to scoop up property at an extreme discount.

This sounds good on paper to some, but the property taxes will then follow the lower values back to a level that won’t be near as beneficial as projected current levels.

Due to millions of residents leaving, businesses that can afford to stay open, increasing prices, workers leaving the state because they can’t afford rent or buy products or services, and second home buyers from out of state or foreign investors gobbling up cheap property in a fire sale and not contributing to the local economy or provide and additional labor to their area, I don’t see how this could be a good thing?

Be careful out there folks!

Found a baby rattlesnake yesterday just off our front porch, about 20ft from our front door. I barely saw it loosely wrapped up near the base of a large ceramic pot. We live in Chicago Park, and relocated it as far away from people as possible.

If you order doordash or instacart, Juan may be the one delivering your food, so keep that in mind.

Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park

A friend asked about a place to explore within reach of Burney. Ahjumawi Lava Springs was the first thing to come to mind. .

It is only reachable by shallow boat. A few years ago, we kayaked there in early May. We had the park to ourselves, without mosquitoes. Time your visit but visit.

Every time I go to Salt Point on the Sonoma coast I start to plan our next visit. Thus week we saw beautiful wildflowers, rhododendrons, redwood groves, seals, ocean movement, and so much more.

But the stars will always be the tafoni and coastal formations.

A driver made a left turn and didn't see my friend Stacey Johnson on her motorcycle. She was killed on July 4, 2020. I was struck in an almost identical crash a few months ago—a driver failed to yield, and my life changed in seconds.

These aren't freak accidents. Motorcyclists are about 28 times more likely to die in a crash than car drivers, and a huge portion involves drivers simply not seeing motorcycles or understanding how to share the road safely.

I started a petition asking California to require motorcycle safety education in all driver's ed programs. We're talking about teaching new drivers to recognize motorcycles, understand lane splitting (which is legal here), and know how to avoid the exact scenarios that nearly killed me and did kill Stacey.

California has the most registered motorcycles in the country. It's time our DMV and driver education courses reflected that reality. A dedicated module on motorcycle awareness, left-turn failures to yield, and safe road-sharing could prevent tragedies before they happen.

If this matters to you—whether you ride, drive, or just care about road safety—consider signing and sharing.

This is an occupied bat house on the back side of my garage probably 15 feet up and it's been slowly falling off the wall for the past three years now. Is it safe for me to fix this at night, after they leave? Does every bat leave every night, typically? Because of the angle it's at, I'm not able to look up inside of it with a flashlight. And one i do fix it, will my smell on it cause them to abandon it? I love having bats and don't want to scare them off or hurt any.

I'm in northern California

Hi! :) I am looking to get away this weekend given that I am going to have a 4 day weekend. I live in Los Angeles but want to explore more of Northern California. I am wondering if there are any recommendations for spots in California I should visit?

Howdy, howdy!

So my partner and I will be stopping in NorCal for Memorial Day. We already have camping reservations for a few nights and plan to hit up one of the Redwood parks on Memorial Day, but we are looking to do some dispersal camping in that area on the 23rd and 24th. We are from Colorado and have experience with dispersal camping in BLM/National Forest land. I know very well that Memorial Weekend is almost a no go in Colorado near RMNP. Wondering if it’s the same up in NorCal.

Is that too lofty a goal considering the bad timing (Memorial Day Weekend) and area? Should we call it and find a shitty hotel?

A security guard purposely looked away while homeless people took thrown-out food from the dumpster. He turned his back. Let them do it.

They came late - after 1am. Stayed quiet. Left no mess. This clearly happens all the time.

With how hard life is right now money-wise, watching someone pick being a decent human over following corporate rules? That actually meant something.

I know not everyone will agree. Some will say rules are rules. But throwing away good food every night while people sleep outside is straight-up crazy. This one small act cut through that crazy.

Shout out to that guard. Shout out to Trader Joe’s Chico if the managers know and let it happen.

Just really needed to see something humane for once. Chico came through for its less fortunate.
