BCT hype up

Shipping soon and I keep reading all these negative and depressing posts. I stopped reading them but like, do you guys have anything good to say? I was always excited and couldn’t wait to ship. Now that I read all this stuff I’m a little weirded out.

Going into basic skinny as hell

I (17F, 5'6, 120lbs) am shipping off to basic within the next few months. I am not athletic or muscular and it is extremely hard for me to gain weight no matter how much I eat/work out. Will I be able to pass basic if I get double rats? How does the process of getting double rats work? Am I cooked? I want to get to 150lbs by the end of basic/AIT (42R). Is that realistic?

The MBCT Transition From ABCT

Hi, folks. I was taking some time yesterday to reflect on the National Guard's Armored Brigades (The 278th and the 30th are top of mind), and was sort of stopping to morn their loss due to the planned transition of those units from armored unit to "Mobile Brigade Combat Teams." I'm still not sure what an MBCT is really supposed to be doing except for cosplaying as the Marines in the Pacific, or relearning lessons in the next Middle Eastern war that we learned in the last round of Middle Eastern wars. Nor do I understand why ABCTs, and the associated institutional knowledge built up through dozens of expensive and mentally exhausting rotations of being f-ed from behind at NTC or JMRC, are the key candidates for a light infantry unit based around a vehicle that makes the original tent-doored HMMWVs look like an MRAP. Nor do I understand how golf-carts address the threat of FPVs and Lancets. But I suppose that this is all part of the grand-plan to make our war-fighters even more lethal-er.

Seriously though, the point of this post isn't for a middle-aged man to rant about the new-fangled infantry unit, I actually have questions. From the looks of things, the transition hasn't started yet for either of the three ABCTs that are supposed to transition. Is there a chance it just... doesn't happen? I've heard rumblings that congress was going to say no to this whole idea, any truth to that? Have armor crews been given an off-ramp, or are they going to have to re-class or just leave the force? Also, from an active-duty ABCT perspective, doesn't this just make the already prohibitively insane work-load and schedule... worse? Like, sorry 1st Armored, we're gonna need you to rotate into Adazi again! Also, why is this a good idea, from your POV?

Off Peak Bonus - I need more information.

On the flyer my recruiter gave me, it said I can get an off peak bonus of $7,500 if I enlist after October 1st and ship before May 15th. I know there's a catch to this. What is the catch?

The only "catch" I see is you must have an ASVAB score of 31 or higher, but i'm sure there's more stipulations.

What Will Happen To My Accrued Leave Days After I Graduate AIT?

Good evening to everyone reading this. I am a month away from graduating from AIT and am very curious about what will happen to my leave days after graduating. My recruiter told me that I will be "paid out" for my leave days, and my Drill Sergeants are telling me that they either don't know for national guard or that "I'll keep them until needed". Whatever that means. All of the research I've tried to do on the matter has led me nowhere, so I figured I'd ask about it in this subreddit. Thank you for your time.

I have several consecutive months of FTNGDOS Orders prior to 2022, am I eligible for the GWOTSM?

Basically what is stated above. I have heard conflicting answers from multiple leaders on this issue and have several folks in the same boat as me. Even looked at 600-8-22 prior to 2022 and don’t have a solid answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated

National Defense Award

Friend of mine went into the Air Force in 2020 but did not graduate BMT. Same friend of mine is now in the National Guard and has graduated BCT and AIT.

Are they able to wear the National Defense ribbon due to their “service” back in 2020? It’s not currently listed on the DD214, but would filling out a DD215 add that ribbon to his record?

Ukraine’s All-Robot Assault Force Just Won Its First Battle

As of April 2026, Ukrainian forces achieved a significant milestone in modern warfare, using a squad of ground-based robotic platforms to seize a Russian-occupied position without human Soldiers on the ground. This, first, all-robot operation involved, among others, the NC13 unit, enabling the capture of "surviving" Soldiers.

So here’s the real question…

If robots begin taking terrain, scouting, breaching, and surviving where humans used to die…

What becomes the true value of tomorrow’s leader?

Advice?

Hello! I’m looking for some advice on an important decision. I’ll be finishing my training and becoming a licensed clinical psychologist within the next year, and I’ve been considering joining the National Guard.

My plan would be to maintain a civilian career while serving part-time, unless I’m able to secure a full-time position within the Guard. For those with experience, would you recommend this path? How manageable is it to balance both, and do you feel it’s been worth it?

I’d really appreciate any insight or personal experiences. Thank you!

Medical question (ARNG)

I’m an E-5, been in 7.5 years, I have over a year of active duty orders under my belt, and I’m now dealing with medical problems. I just got on a permanent profile for back issues which limit me from doing the 2-mile on the ACFT, as well as a lifting restriction of 120lbs (I put that because it’s the minimum requirement for the deadlift). But they told me I can’t have a lifting restriction or I face being medically discharged. I originally told them it’s just a precaution that me and my doctor agreed on, but now I realize I’d be lying if I didn’t need it. I was supposed to call and get it taken off a week or two ago and they called me the other day… I didn’t answer. The injury is back related like I said, causing sciatic pain down my left side and bilateral pain across my lower back and other stuff like joint stiffness in neck and shoulders + migraines. It’s horrible… I can’t even sweep the house for 3 minutes without having to lay down. It stemmed from my last set of orders which lasted 8 months but didn’t start hurting bad until after they ended so I don’t have an LOD. What should I do? I’ve been advised to request to go through medical board and have a nexus letter ready for my doctor to sign.

Edit: I didn’t file for an LOD during my orders but I did about a year later when PT aggravated it and I ended up at the ER for the sciatic pain down to my foot, leg, and hips. Never heard whether it actually got processed so idk if I have one or not.

Issues with taping

Alright so I'm in a weird predicament. I've been working on slimming my waist down so I can pass the taping...whatever, I managed to get to 33 inches, measuring at the belly button like how they do...but then I go into RSP and they tell me it's a 38, what am I doing wrong? Should I just...never eat food again? Or am I completely missing something, I passed the fitness test and stuff but...jeez, this is stressful because I only have till my shipdate in June...any advice will help, even laxatives.

Transfer while Failing Ht/It (lemme explain)

Hey, so I just wanted to ask and see if anyone has been in a similar situation. I'm a 29 year old male. Been in the Guard for almost 5 years. Been an 11C for the last 2. Looking to potentially move to my states band unit in the near future. Yes I recently failed Height and Weight, but, I never fail a PT Test. In fact on every test, I outscored nearly 2/3 of my company. Last AFT was 428/500. Recruiter for the band assures me as long as I'm losing weight I will be good for transfer. Regardless I've seen some BIG guys in my time. A few months back my unit retired a career SPC who was busting in his uniform. These guys never catch any flak, yet I see guys fail a few times who are clearly still in shape, and you would think they murdered one of the full timers dogs the way they get talked to.

Long story short, how worried should I be about my transfer going through even if technically I still cant meet the new weight standards. Worst comes to worst, I'm looking at moving to the Navy if band doesnt work out. Infantry Kool Aid didn't work on me and I need to do something else.

ADOS

I’ve been offered ADOS orders but I’m conflicted on whether or not I should take it. I currently am earning 55k at my civilian job. It is a management trainee program and I am 4-5 months into the program.

One of my sergeants reached out to me that a position was opening up and he recommended me for the position so I’m guaranteed if I were to accept. I would make more money with these ADOS orders. Only issue is with traffic it is an hour drive and with it being ADOS there is always a fear that they can just drop me.

Should I accept or just stay at my civilian job? I know they can’t fire me but with it being a trainee/rotational program I’m at a loss on what to do.

What is the process like to be 11b?

Im in talks with my recruiter and really considering 11b. I have good current/future plans at home at the moment but I really want to scratch the itch.

With that being said, what is after bct? I keep hearing the terms AIT and OSUT, but I’m not sure which applies. I also don’t know what either of those are. Is there any free time or is it essentially an extended bct? if anyone can explain more that would be awesome.

On top of that Im worried about the fitness side of things. Im fit, but I’m not sure if it’ll be good enough. I’ll list some stats below if anyone cares to comment

7 min - 1 mile

15 min - 2 mile

I struggle with rucking and Im not sure the pace/distance needed

70 push-ups

20 pull ups

3:00 plank

I would really appreciate any help, especially since I know nothing about the service in general let alone the process I’d go through in the Guard

Little late to the party but I just hit 3 years in

Just hit three years in the Army National Guard. Missing a state medal on here and qual is wrong but could not be more proud of this in only three short years. Have one deployment under my belt so far.

Injured at AIT

I'm currently at FSH for 68W. I've been injured since Basic, but I can tell that both of my knees have deeper, structural injuries. I haven't had any imaging done, but at this point, I'm thinking of going to sick call and pushing for it.

In the case that my injuries are severe and require intense PT or even surgery, am I allowed to request con leave or REFRAD? As a National Guardsman, will receiving a REFRAD be easier than for my Active Duty folks? My only concern is being stuck here as a medical holdover for months. If I will be, I will try pushing through it but if I can get a con leave or REFRAD, I would feel more comfortable going to sick call and pushing for imaging…

Thank you all.

Going Active Duty after joining the guard.

I made a previous post on here asking about the guard. I want to go Active Duty Army and pursue Army Ranger. The thing is I have one 4 year old son, and another baby on the way, due this September. Both are with different women so it makes it hard for sure. I’m still working on joining the NG as of right now. I’ve also been told I need to almost have my kids moms “permission” to join the NG. Not totally sure how it works exactly, and still learning the process. I’ve already gone and taken, my ASVAB and scored an 80. I’m choosing 11B with the hopes of going SF eventually. I’m 28 years old. After I get into the NG can I switch to Active Duty fairly easily? Or can my kids moms stop me? And can they stop me from joining Active Duty Army right now?
