Flip top (and thumb) Alpha Direct Mittens

I’m smitten with Alpha Direct, and my fingers are often cold. Thus the Alpha Mittens. I haven’t seen any made of this material, though maybe they’re out there.

I was nervous to sew Alpha, since it’s delicate and pricey, but found it to be very forgiving. Used a walking foot, 2.5 thread tension, with an overcast stitch to capture the edges.

Touch screen compatible even without folding back the flip top! Little flaps cover the slits in the palms and thumbs.

This design works well with my Komperdel trekking poles that have gloves that clip into the poles. The slits allow for the poles to connect with the mittens on.

Will try thinner cord for the pull loops on the next pair.

Last pic has paper in the slits just to highlight where they are. It’s hard photographing black fabric!

My first time making bike bags!

Haven’t used a sewing machine since I was a kid, but got inspired by this subreddit! Put in the time over the past month and really like how they came out. Xpac materials with a sew in interface on the sides of the frame bags for added structure. The dry bags might be my favorite. Seam sealed with seam tape.

Heavy duty bunker gear bag

I needed a bag to pack my bunker gear to make it easier going anytime I’m travelling somewhere for training. I may have gone a little overkill in all aspects, but I quite like the end result. I still need to add some D rings on the end for a shoulder strap, but it works great for now. 18oz 1000D coated pvc vinyl, #10 ykk brass zippers, and seatbelt handle straps. It may not be pretty, but at least it should hold up to a lot of abuse eh?

Jeans

Just finished this pair of jeans using the Quadra pattern by Thread Theory. Great pattern, good directions. No sew-along video, but they have a pretty detailed series of blog posts that helped me through the tricky parts. I'm really excited to wear these to the office tomorrow!

please help me with dyeing my backpack

Hey,

I own this backpack which I really love in terms of comfort and features, but I'm slowly starting to hate the orange accents. Is there a way to neutralize or dye the orange straps and zippers?

Thanks very much for any tips! <3

Canvas Sleeping mat/bed roll

Before you mention 'there's lighter materials out there this is dumb' go away thats not the mission.

I have a 10'x12' 12oz material canvas tarp i want to cut down sew and wax with the endstate hopefully being a bedroll/sleeping mat

I'm going with the standard dimensions of a pad seeing as I'm roughly the avg. Sized person.

It looks great in my head and I have a *rough* plan of execution.

Get the material measured and drawn out, cut the top and bottom pieces get goin.

My hang-up questions are three bits

●should I cut individual strips for the side walls and make a zipper access? Or should I cut either the top or bottom wider and fold and stitch to fit?

Ideally it will be a thin hallow pad which would allow me to fill

with fluff or other materials to give some cushion/insulation or even just throw my blanket in there if the weather is nice enough.

●should I wax the canvas in stages of completion, everything NOT in the work area first then seams, or once completed hit it with the wax?

●I have a singer machine they released for their 160 celebration that boast it can do a dozen of layers of denim, how can I best utilize that for reinforcing my seams appropriately on the canvas?

On the face this does seem like a kinda big undertaking but, there's no way better to get it done with out starting it first.

I have no idea how to get a job in gear/apparel design, so my idea was just to keep making until I figure it out

(Haven't figured it out yet, but I'm proud of the stuff I've made)

Custom backpack I designed

Created this backpack in ClO and rendered in Gemini. What you guys think of this style bag as a EDC bag?

Hook & loop tapes are way more critical to a build than I thought

I usually treat hook & loop tapes like a throwaway detail…I mean just something you add at the end of a project when you don’t feel like dealing with snaps or buckles. But after a few MYOG builds, I’ve realized they can make or completely ruin the final result. It’s not actually all hook and loop tapes that are created equally. Some have that satisfying, aggressive grip that feels bombproof, while others barely hold after a few uses. One time, I made the mistake of using a cheaper strip on a gear pouch, and within a week it started peeling and losing bite. I had to rip it out and redo the whole thing again. Learned my lesson tho.

And there’s this stiffness factor. Some tapes are too rigid and mess with how fabric drapes, especially on lighter materials. Others are softer but sacrifice holding power. Finding that balance is weirdly one of the hardest parts of dialing in a clean build.

I ended up finding info, trying to get cleaner installs, looking into hot cutters, edge sealing methods, and even the kind of machines used to bond hook and loop at scale. That somehow led me to checking some on alibaba, and even aliexpress, and it made me realize how much process goes into something we usually treat as an afterthought.

Now I treat hook and loop as a core material choice, not an afterthought. Kinda makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

25L Prickly Gorse Pack

My second bag. Previously, I've made a mountain flyer as well as some non-bag projects like a quilt, tarp, bivy, and hoodie. Started sewing last year.

For this bag, I wanted a 25L bag for use on shorter backpacking trips, as a daypack, and as a personal item for air travel. I also wanted to try making solid side pockets and shoulder strap pockets as my previous bag had neither of those. I used mostly venom gridstop with venom HPU for the back and bottom panels, and venom mesh for the front pocket. Took the bag on a weekend trip to UT/AZ and did some day hikes and it worked great, very comfortable and even fit my laptop for the flight.

I found the pattern to be very comprehensive and easy to follow, with lots of options for customizations. Would definitely recommend!

Tried to improvise simple snowshoes inspired by traditional Japanese designs - rough but functional

Had to improvise a pair of snowshoes recently and thought this community might appreciate the roughness of the result.

I was traveling through the Balkans on my way to Greece and had packed some winter camping gear, but didn’t expect to run into this much snow in the mountains of Montenegro.

To be able to move at all in deeper snow, I ended up quickly rigging a very simple pair of snowshoes from branches, zip ties and a bit of paracord I had in my repair kit.

The idea was loosely inspired by traditional Japanese snowshoes (kanjiki-style), which I always found interesting because of how simple and minimal they are. With cold fingers and limited time the result definitely turned out a bit rougher than intended.

Surprisingly though, they worked well enough to cover a few kilometers and made the trip possible in the first place.

Now that I’m back home with access to proper tools, I’m tempted to try building a cleaner version, possibly closer to the traditional Japanese approach.

Curious if anyone here has experimented with similar minimal snowshoe designs or has experience with kanjiki-style setups?

I included one reference photo of the traditional design that inspired the idea.

Challenge UltraTenX Stuff Sacks

I have been making stuff sacks and zip bags etc from the brand new fabric from Challenge Outdoor, UltraTenX. Its a 100% UHMWPE weave. It has a stiffer handfeel, but with use it becomes a little more "supple". It has a really cool look. It is not available retail that I'm aware of, so thought you guys would be interested to see it in use. 🙂

I attached the data sheet for your pleasure. 🙌

Feel free to ask any questions about it. Just to be clear, I am not associated with Challenge in any way.

Bike Bags and Rack

Sewed up a new frame bag for a White Rim trip this coming weekend. I swear I saw someone in this group use this interior lace idea to maintain the width of the bag, also providing some separation of the space. Whoever you are, great idea! I put two rows of tabs so I could play with the spacing/placement of the laces.

I also put together the handlebar/stem bags which are effectively an homage/rip off of Yeah Nah Threadworks, I don't like water bottles on my bars so these more streamlined bags are great for snacks and tools.

Last thing is the rack I designed a little while ago, I've got probably 300 miles of mixed surface riding (including singletrack) and it's working great. It's just a dry-bag holder effectively, I like it to be as low to the wheel as possible and this puts it like 1.5cm above the wheel.

Backpacking rectangular fry pan

I wanted a reasonably ultralight oblong or rectangular frying pan for small mountain trout.

Most of the pans I’ve seen are round or they’re not very long and the 8+ inch round ones tend to be heavy-ish.

I made this one out of a Nordicware aluminum bread pan. I cut the top off and used a strip of the remaining top to create a handle with a small wood rod that I had laying around. The entire thing weighs about 4 1/2 ounces with the handle.

It is 8 1/2 inches long and 5 inches wide. The handle is removable.

New Juki 1541...weird sound after set up

I posted this in r/sewing as well. I just got a new Juki 1541. There is a weird sound during slower speed but goes away as I press down more on the pedal. Will this go away over time or should I be concerned?

Simple pillow strap

I switched to a quilt last year and have been meaning to make a simple strap for my Nemo Filo pillow (Greta pillow if you like lower and wide) to keep it from sliding around.

This is simply some shock cord looped through the hang loop already sewn to the pillow case, and a cord lock sewn to the tag on the opposite side.

Not the most impressive MYOG but should work well!

What material for a "chew proof" dog bed?

A buddy of mine has a fairly large pig as an indoor pet and has asked me to make a dog bed for it. Probelm is this pig has destroyed every dog bed they have gotten for it in the past. I'm not sure what material I should be looking for to use for the shell of this bed. My first though was 1000d Cordura but I'm not sure if that's much tougher than some of the commercially available dog beds that are already out there.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone know if a kenmore machine would be useful?

Visiting my in-laws and came across this kenmore 117-552.

https://imgur.com/a/GxfzeeF

The wood top has some water damage(sat next to open window) but the machine appears just dusty, been sitting for 20 plus years.

They want to toss it out, I'm debating if i should save the machine and take it home, its within the weight limit for a checked bag if i scrap the wood.

My use case is usually knits and other synthetics but also expanding towards leather for boot uppers and webbing for quickdraw dogs. Currently using a singer hd a friend gave me and an old serger.

I doubt this would replace the singer but could it be a good addition?

Not opposed to looking for help re-homing this either if anyone in western New Jersey is interested or knows a place to donate it. Just hate to see it go to the dump.
