Take the L on 6.101, pre-law?

I’m a sophomore who will end B or C in 6.101 (6.1010) this sem, but had an A in 6.120 (6.1200) last sem. Haven’t taken 6.121 (6.1210) yet, may need to flex PNR that class down the road if it’s similar to 6.101.

I’m 6-4, not sure if the other classes I take will be harder to get an A in but I’m pre-law that’s why I care lmao. The other classes I’ll take seem to be rated higher on the subject evals, at least in terms of grade fairness and how much people enjoyed those classes. Ofc they could be skewed, I recognize that I’d need to work hard in all classes and I’m not tryna pretend like they’re a piece of cake. I’ve never flex-PNR’ed anything and mainly spent my freshman year on GIRs so my soph year classes have been more intense.

Do you think I’ll ever need the rest of my flex-PNR if I’m saving 24 credits for 6.101 and 6.121? I don’t think I’d flex PNR a humanities class but I’m also not sure. I js don’t wanna miss the deadline and become ineligible to flex PNR it later. Sorry for the long message but yea I’m just not sure if I should take the L or not on this one. Im def better at math than programming

Master thesis MIT vs JHU

Hey everyone

I am a Master Student in Europe and i have to decide between two options for doing my master thesis abroad. I have a offer a 12 month stay at a MIT/Harvard lab and for a 9 month stay at Johns Hopkings University.

The first project would be a project on medical devices and the second one on medical robotics.

I preferre the JHU option because i find the project more interesting, fell more comfortable with the work i would need to do, and for personal reasons but on the other hand if feels stupid to pass a MIT/Harvard offer.

Does anyone has a opinion or advice?

mit vs scholarship in-state (not passionate abt mit rn)

hi all, stressing out bc i have to commit in less than 2 weeks

at mit, id have to pay about 5k a year out of pocket, so 20k by graduation. i would work a UROP initially and hopefully develop into better jobs/internships by the end of my mit career, but i would definitely be in debt by the end of it (5k is just housing, i still need to pay my personal expenses)

at my cheap in-state (where i have years of dual enrollment) i would graduate with over 30k dollars saved JUST from the school. id graduate w at least 2 minors (i just need one more semester to get them) and i could even finish my masters in potentially 4 years bc of the 5year masters they have. Working internships during the semester would be extremely easy bc rigor isnt as high as MIT and i would be living at home. I'd easily graduate with $60k (i know ppl who have done it).

mit had never been my DREAM school (i wouldnt DIE to get in), but its always been the onetop school i would want to go to. i literally cried out of happiness and relief when i got in!! ive visited a couple times now, and honestly, thanks to my recent visit, im not in love with it. dorm life seems like it sucks (bathrooms and kitchens are dirty), stuff like the banana lounge (which is very hyped) has sofas that look older than my great-grandma's, and i could name more stuff if needed. it does have the major i want tho, which my instate school doesnt offer (yet i could just specialize in my area of interest in my instate)

I like it, dont get me wrong -- way more than my in state school. i just dont know if its worth the years away from family, years with financial insecurity, and years with depressing winters.

Pls help!!!!!!!! this is not a troll im genuinely stressing

Who pays Lex Fridman's salary? His official title is Research Scientist, but he doesn't publish and doesn't even live in MA

One thing I've wondered for a long time is how Lex Fridman can remain a research scientist. The bare minimum for a PI to fund someone out of grants is that they must work on the grant at least a little bit, but it's hard to see how this can be the case for Fridman. He lives in Texas and seemingly does no research. There are titles like Research Associate that allow someone to retain and email and are unpaid, but Research Scientist carries an implication of actively doing research and being paid from a grant.

Someone is paying him every month and is periodically certifying that he does research on the project that funds him. Who? The whole thing seems very sketchy to me.

CPW is amazing.

Seriously. It was the most fun I've had in years. I'm already sad that I have to fly back in a few hours. I really appreciate everyone who made it possible and all current students who dedicated their precious time for this. So excited for August ! cant wait

Looking for a summer sublease in Cambridge (early June to early Sept)

Hi all,

I’m a UC San Diego grad student coming to Boston for a summer internship, and I’m looking for a sublease in Cambridge from early June to early September.

I figured there’s a decent chance some grad students here might be away for internships too, so I thought I’d give this a shot. I’d especially love to rent from grad housing, since I live in grad housing myself at UC San Diego, but I’m open to other options too.

I’m tidy, chill, and respectful of the space. If you have a place, know someone who does, or can point me to good websites/groups for finding housing, I’d really appreciate it. Feel free to DM me.

Thanks!

8.04, 8.041 and 8.033

I’m a freshman course 8 taking 8.03 this semester. Since 8.04 is only offered in the spring, I was planning on taking 8.033 next semester and then taking 8.04 sophomore spring.

However, I just heard about 8.041 and I’m considering taking that next fall and then 8.051 next spring. Note that if I do this, I probably won’t have space in my schedule for 8.033 next semester.

So I have a couple questions for physics upperclassmen and alumni:

- What are 8.041 and 8.051 like? What are their pros and cons compared to 8.04 and 8.05?

- What is 8.033 like? I want to go to grad school for astrophysics, so is 8.033 something I should take if I want to go down that route? Or would 8.20 be sufficient?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best units at Graduate Junction to avoid train noise?

Hi everyone,

I’m applying to Graduate Junction and they’re asking me to list my preferred units/locations.

For those who have stayed there: which units or buildings are best to avoid facing the train line tracks (noise, etc.)?

Any specific blocks, floors, or directions I should request or avoid?

Thanks!

Flex-PNR a B or C? (6.1010)

I am a freshman in 6.1010 and I know I can’t get an A in it anymore - should I flex PNR it at the end of the semester? GPA matters bc I am pre-med. I’m worried other classes be even harder to get an A in, I still have to take 6.3900 and some other higher level course 6 classes. I guess I don’t know if it’s worth using since flex-PNR is so limited. I just declared curse 6-7 (literally) if that helps. It’s just the midterm that really killed me, but that means the final might be bad for me too.

Physics grad classes without prereqs?

I am a non physics major that is enrolling in the physics PhD program in the fall. Tbh I have never taken an undergraduate upper level physics class in my life.

These are the core requirements to pass the doctoral program:

  • Classical Mechanics (8.309)
  • Electricity & Magnetism (8.311)
  • Quantum Mechanics (8.321)
  • Statistical Mechanics (8.333)

Would these be doable without taking the prereqs? Any advice? Lmk if I can dm anyone.

(before you ask, idk how i was admitted either)
