Confused on whether or not to go to jury duty (reposted to add location).

Reposting this to say I live on the coast in Mississippi. I received a summons recently, and I sent in a letter and doctors note to be excused from it. But since I was only able to send that off a week before the case (which starts tomorrow), I called the circuit clerks office twice. I can’t remember why I called the first time, but the second was to confirm that they got my note. I’m still not quite sure that they got my note, but throughout those two calls, during which I spoke to two different women, they both pretty much told me if I sent in the letter I don’t need to show up. And I remember being told I didn’t need to receive confirmation of that. Basically no news is good news in this case.

When I spoke to the second woman, she told me the previous woman had “checked off” my name. She told me I didn’t need to show up, and that I didn’t need to call the number the night before. She also told me they literally do nothing to people who don’t show up, and she giggled when I said I didn’t want to be fined or arrested.

That was two days ago, but I did call tonight and the recording told me to go. It didn’t ask for my name, juror number, voter ID or anything personal at all. It just said something like if you’ve received a summons for the week of April 20, report in the morning. But here’s the thing: my husband called as well and it turns out everyone who calls hears that recording whether they received a summons or not. He didn’t receive one, and yet heard the same recording.

I am so confused on whether or not I need to go. The people I spoke with this past week told me don’t go, but the recording did (and apparently would tell everyone who called it).

Rename the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi

The Stennis Space Center is one of Mississippi's most important scientific institutions. But it's named after Senator John C. Stennis, a longtime segregationist who fought against civil rights. That disconnect doesn't sit right.

I started a petition asking decision-makers to to rename the space center to something that actually reflects what it stands for: innovation, progress, and the future. A place this important should carry a name that inspires people from all backgrounds.

Thank you for your support.

Mississippi park with waterfall?

Hello! I am an avid hiker who currently lives and works in the Silicon Valley. My mom grew up in Northern Mississippi (near Corinth).

When I was an undergraduate student, I took a road trip with my girlfriend (now my wife) and a friend from college with my oldest sister's young kids.

We volunteered to drop them off at a half-way point between my sister's house (outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee) and their grandparents' home in South Texas. This half-way point happened to be Meridian, Mississippi.

On the way to Meridian, we found a park that was just off the highway somewhere in Mississippi. It was a really beautiful park too. It had a stream and a steep hiking area. We spent a few hours there; and, everyone truly enjoyed it.

The problem is that we don't remember the name of the park. We also lost our digital photos that were inadvertently deleted from a computer that crashed during college. So, I really have no way of knowing the name or location of this park.

The only clues that I have are: It was located in a hilly location (or ravine) with a creek or small river (and, possibly, a waterfall) in the park. And, of course, it was probably located just off of Route 11 (I-59) between Slidell, LA and Meridian, MS. Or, it is possibly located off of I-55 (between Hammond and Jackson). I really don't remember the route...but those are the two options that I would have taken.

Does anyone have a clue as to which park this might have been? I'd like to return again one day. I remember it being remarkably scenic (especially when contrasted with the university town where I was attending school).

Let's change the name of the Ross R. Barnett Reservoir

The time has come to stop recognizing and exalting the names of segregationists in Mississippi. The Ross R. Barnett Reservoir, a significant body of water in our state, bears the name of a known segregationist governor who openly defied federal laws to maintain racial separation. While it has been over half a century since Barnett left office, his legacy continues to loom over our communities, reminding residents and visitors of a painful past.

Ross R. Barnett, who served as governor from 1960 to 1964, was a vocal advocate for racial segregation, defying Supreme Court orders and famously blocking African American students from entering the University of Mississippi in 1962. Such actions were not only damaging to the lives of countless Mississippians at the time but continue to symbolize a history of racial injustice.

Renaming the Ross R. Barnett Reservoir presents an opportunity for Mississippi to move forward, to reconcile with its history, and to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all its citizens.

By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a Mississippi that respects all its citizens equally and is committed to change. Let us work together to ensure that the names that grace our landmarks reflect the progress and unity we strive to achieve.

Your signature can help show the world that Mississippi is ready to move forward and embrace a brighter future. Please sign this petition to initiate the change we need.

Suggest a Hotel with Spa in MS ASAP

Hi everyone, I’m still fairly new to Mississippi (been here about a year), and I could really use some local recommendations.

I’m planning a weekend getaway for my wife’s birthday (around May 1st) and want to make it special for her. Ideally, I’m looking for a nice hotel that has a spa or easy access to spa services, along with any other relaxing or family-friendly amenities. We’ll also have our two kids with us, so a comfortable and safe environment is really important.

I’ve looked into a few options like the Westin in Jackson and the Sheraton, but unfortunately they seem to be fully booked that weekend. I also came across Quality Inn & Suites in Clinton, but I’ve heard mixed things about that area, so I’m a bit unsure.

At the end of the day, my main goal is to give my wife a relaxing and memorable birthday experience something she’ll truly enjoy while still being practical for us as a family.

If you have any recommendations for great hotels, spa spots, or even nearby cities worth considering for a weekend trip in Mississippi, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Help with Mississippi Travel Ideas & Stays

We’re planning our yearly trip to Memphis/Graceland/Tupelo, but I’m second guessing Tupelo a bit since our BNB got canceled and now second guessing. We do have one option there (we love the host), but we’re also thinking about switching it up and being a little adventurous—unless Tupelo really is the place to be?

We’re going the first week of June and looking for somewhere either near a charming downtown (a mall nearby is a bonus for my teens, not a need at all) or something more country but still close to a good town area. I’ve heard the Ole Miss area is pretty lively—would that be a good option? My girls are 15 and 13, for reference.

I’m not super familiar with this part of Mississippi, but ideally we’d stay within about an hour of Tupelo (maybe 2 if it’s really worth it 😂 would rather not go more south. I’m conflicted though ).

Any advice or must-see spots along the way to Tupelo would be so appreciated—thank you!!

Considering:

Pontotoc

Tupelo

Oxford

Starkville

Batesville (there’s a treehouse BNB 👀)

Ole Miss area

Taylor

Open to other recommendations too!

Name Ole Miss' Politcal Science Department

Ray Mabus and his friends set up an endowment for Ole Miss' Political Science department, so they named the department after him. If the department name was based on political merit instead of money, who would be most deserving? To make this interesting, let's say you can't name it after William Winter or Thad Chocran because they already have large institutes on campus.

Question about how you refer to your state in casual conversation

I live in Massachusetts and one thing I notice about people here is that in casual conversation they’ll oftentimes abbreviate the state as “Mass.” Seeing as Massachusetts and Mississippi have similar syllabic structures (owing to their shared history as indigenous words), do people in Mississippi similarly refer to the state as “Miss?”

Obviously Ole Miss is a flagship university, but is “Miss” also used in common conversation?
