Parked Cycle got stolen in Tottenham station

Parked Cycle got stolen in Tottenham station

Hey guys, I locked my bike at the bike parking space on the station platform around noon today. When I returned at about 9:00 PM, the bike was gone and only my helmet was left on the ground.

There is a security camera directly above the bike parking area. I looked for station staff but couldn’t find anyone.

Who can I report this? What do I do now? Is it like gone?

Thanks for listening

"Shriveled" option for Wellington St passes council

The result will be a slight improvement for Wellington St, as you can see in the motion text, but nothing like the original visionary proposal. Neither modal filters nor protected bike lanes will be installed.

Last chance to support Wellington Street upgrades

After an officer report which refutes the objections from the anti change campaign and demonstrates a majority in favour of change, council officers have nevertheless proceeded to recommend that no meaningful change be undertaken.

Councillors can still vote for change, however, and if you're a Yarra resident in favour of the changes please sign up to speak for a couple of minutes at the council meeting tomorrow night.

Details of what's proposed, why it's bad, and how to register to speak on the site.

Are there any rail trails around Melbourne where you can do a one-way ride and catch a train back to Melbourne afterwards?

Looking for routes where I can start from a V/Line or Metro station, ride mostly on trails, and finish somewhere with another train station.

Wellington Street upgrade ‘descoped’

The next Yarra Council agenda is out and it appears the administration will recommend a vote towards a “descoped” upgrade that rules out anything impacting traffic volumes and keeps parking removals to a minimum.

So we’re not likely to see the modal filtering the community was being consulted on, which seems to have drawn a negative backlash. Not that surprising after the Elizabeth Street palaver in Richmond.

Worth noting that dozens of crashes and incidents involving cyclists and vehicles have been reported along this stretch, and that 88% of traffic along Wellington Street is passing through without stopping in the local area.

How do you not die when the bike lane ends?

I’ve been bike commuting for about 6 months now. My trip home involves a bike lane that abruptly ends. It’s a busy road so I usually mount the gutter and pop down a path that leads to quiet side streets.

While I do this, I commonly have a Ford Ranger/Bus/other heavy vehicle floor it past me, mirror to ear, in a way that would lead to my death if I pulled out.

I’d prefer to just keep on cruising up the road (but not die). How do you navigate this? Do you stop and wait for a gap? Pull out while reciting the Lord’s Prayer? Is there any legal obligation for vehicles to not squish me?

PSA: it's getting dark early, wear reflective gear!

Probably preaching to the choir here, but reflective gear makes identifying fellow path users so much easier.

I've posted some examples from a recent evening commute:

First picture, a cyclist in reflective gear is being passed by a cyclist not in reflective gear.

Second picture, oncoming cyclists are easy to make out. Compare this to the third picture, where a single bright light shrouds everything in darkness behind it.

Night Cycling Options

With sun setting so early, are there any reasonably safe night-cycling options in or near the CBD area?

Was desperate for a ride last night so I did the capital city trail section between Docklands and Parkville. Seemed ok, but some sections are pitch black. I had good lights and took it slow, but just didn't feel great riding through the pitch black sections with no one else around.

Thought Brunswick Velodrome might be a reasonable option, but that was pitch black too when I checked it out a week or two ago.

Very scary moment riding home from work today. Tesla SUV had pulled up behind a long tram at the lights, the tram doors were shut but they stayed behind the tram. I cycled past and up to the lights. There were parked cars in the left lane ahead so I wasn’t worried about cars trying to pass the tram. Took off on the green light and the tram starts dinging like crazy, all of sudden the Tesla shoots past trying to beat the tram and misses me by centimetres. So fast and so silent. A second later another car tries to make it through, clips me with the side mirror then slams on the brakes because there is no room between the tram and the parked cars, they missed the tram by a millimetre. Just terrifyingly stupid driving by both cars and a big reminder to me to just take the whole fucking lane.

Why do our bike lanes just disappear when things get actually dangerous?

Does anyone else find it mental that the "protected" lanes in Melbourne always end exactly where the intersections get the most congested? It’s like the planners think we just stop existing once the white paint stops. How are you guys handling those gaps without getting squeezed into the gutter by utes?

Crashed in day 1 with new bike

Got back into cycling recently, riding almost every day after picking up a new road bike. Felt amazing… until today.

Was on a shared path, coming up to a woman walking her dog. She moved the dog in, I gave a heads up, all good. Then right as I’m about to pass, she lets the dog wander straight back into my line.

No time to react properly, swerved hard, lost control, and slid about 10m along the pavement.

Bike’s scraped, I’m scraped, ego definitely worse off.

Anyone else had close calls like this on shared paths? Starting to feel like they’re more dangerous than the road sometimes.

Melbourne’s Pop-Up Bike Lanes: Genius or Chaos?

Melbourne is trialing a temporary bike lane method in order to make biking around the city much safer. I find that this is a genuinely transformative project for my city.

Mt Pleasant info

I’m thinking of trying out the Saturday Birrarung Cycling Club ride to Mt Pleasant. I’m a bit nervous because I don’t have too much experience with hills (although I’m generally pretty fit and can do 50km rides well).

I was hoping to try and practice the Mt Pleasant route on a weekday. Any info what it’s like cycling it solo? Is it safe enough when in your own?

So, a few years ago, my wonderful stepdad Arthur was driving home one night when he nearly ran into a couple of people out cycling. They didn’t have lights or reflectors, it was night, and it was a dark road. They were invisible.

Thankfully Arthur saw them at the last second and swerved; everyone was fine, at least physically. But it left Arthur horrified, and determined to prevent it happening again.

He spent the next 5 years designing, prototyping and locally manufacturing a solution. But then Covid hit, and as an older gent, his health hasn’t been the same since.

He’s asked me to finish what he started. Only problem is, I don’t know a damn thing about what cyclists want. So I’m posting here because I'd rather hear from real cyclists than guess.

I genuinely see why he’s passionate about his reflectors.

- They’re flexible, so you’re visible from any angle.

- They’re easy to use, just stick em on using their hardcore adhesive backing. Peel, stick; shine; done. No fuss.

- They don’t need charging, and can’t be stolen.

- They’re indestructible.

- They’re cheap.

The problem he was solving: standard reflectors only work when a car is directly behind you. If you're turning, or a car is approaching from the side, you're basically invisible.

His product is specially designed flexible adhesive reflective tape you stick directly to your frame, fork, wheels, or anywhere else. Because it conforms to the shape of the bike, you get close to 360° visibility without any brackets, charging, or maintenance.

He’s got 1,000 units manufactured and ready to go.

So if anyone's keen to try a (free) set and give honest feedback, or just curious, drop a comment or DM me.

I’m not here to spam or sell. I’m genuinely trying to figure out the best way to get a useful product in front of people who might actually want it. I appreciate any feedback.

Attached are some photos he took. The contrast between a black bike with Arthur’s reflectors, vs a white bike without, is kinda nuts.

traumatic fall

Sorry for the negativity but I need to vent. I’m new to commuter cycling and just had such a scary experience on Sydney Rd in Brunswick. While in the bike lane a Hilux swerved towards me as I suspect he didn’t check his blind spot, I nearly was pushed into a parked car to avoid him. I was so rattled that when I rode right to take the next turn, I went parallel into the tram track and got thrown off my bike about 3 metres and smacked my head hard on the road. Had I not been wearing a helmet or if there had been a car stopped in front of me I would’ve been KO’d or possibly died. Now that I’m home the adrenaline has worn off and the tears have set in. I am so grateful not to be injured but also so angry and upset. Should I go to emergency or just monitor for concussion symptoms?
