Macbook Neo is an incredibly bad deal in Europe

>NOTE: using Spain prices, in Germany they are ~45-50 euro lower across the board which means that percentage wise, the same differences apply between models

Base Neo model: 700 euro

M4 Air 13" base: +200 euro (+28.6%)

 • +2x RAM
 • +M4 chip
 • +TouchID
 • +bigger & better screen (DCI-P3 colorspace) with true tone
 • +magsafe with fast charge
 • +2 thunderbolt ports
 • +better camera with center stage
 • +faster SSD
 • +illuminated keyboard
 • +much larger battery capacity and higher autonomy
 • thinner
 • basically same weight

M4 Air 13" 512gb SSD: +324 euro (+46.3% vs Neo)

 • everything from base M4 air
 • +2 core GPU
 • +2x SSD with higher transfer speeds -> significant future proofing

You get so much more for just 200 euro -> less than 30% increase. You get significant future proofing for 324 euro extra.

Even with education discount it can be difficult to justify it, especially as a long term investment (min 4-5 years). Maybe for people with VERY tight budgets who also happen to be HUGE Apple (MacOS) fans (I personally can't stand it).

An underrated feature of MacBook Neo: Very colour accurate display! Neo vs Apple Studio Display

When people discuss the displays on laptops, it’s always the refresh rate and LCD vs OLED. I understand that high refresh rates and true blacks are appealing for gaming and media consumption, but when it comes to colour grading for video and photo, those are almost irrelevant. Instead, things like colour accuracy and IPS matter tremendously, and that’s what I want to highlight here as a photographer and video editor.

For reference, Neo’s display has a ΔE of 1.45, which is slightly better than a nearly $800 Dell UltraSharp U2725QE, which has a ΔE of < 1.5 (the lower the better), and better than the the MacBook Air M4 (ΔE 1.54). While ΔE isn’t the only factor that matters regarding colour accuracy, it goes to show the quality of Neo’s display.

Regardless of what you think of Apple/macOS/MacBooks, it’s undeniable that the MacBook Neo is now the most affordable laptop if you want a decent level of colour accuracy to get into photo/video/graphic work (in sRGB/Rec709 at least)—you will not find any other laptop with similar colour accuracy in this price range.

I’ve included a comparison of a series of photos I took displaying on the Apple Studio Display (2022) and the MacBook Neo display. I’m not attempting to make a scientific comparison with these sets of photos, but you can see that the colours and contrast in the photos on Neo’s display look almost identical to those on the ASD.

While the Apple Studio Display is not the same as “real” reference monitors costing 5 figures and more, it has remarkable colour accuracy right out of the box (based on objective tests), and it’s why many media professionals—including myself—use it for our professional work.

In my real-life experience, photos I edited on the Neo look exactly the same when I view them on the ASD. This even makes the Neo an extremely portable photo editing laptop to take with you on a trip, for example.

Yes, Neo can only display sRGB, but again, remember the target audience for the Neo. A student just starting to dabble into photography has a lot of other fundamentals to learn before they get to proper colour management, and I’d argue that unless you have a proper understanding of colour management, it’s better to stick to sRGB to begin with—most budding photographers share their photos digitally rather than printing them anyway.

I’m genuinely excited about this for students and those on a budget because I was once a broke student trying to get into photography. At the time, I learned about the importance of using a colour accurate display for photo editing, and because my $600 Windows laptop had horrendous colour accuracy, I ended up stretching my budget to buy a dedicated monitor for it (it was a BenQ PD2500Q, which actually had a ΔE of ≤3 so it still wasn’t a very good one). If I had the Neo back then, I would already have a very colour accurate display ready for photo editing.

Help me understand 🤭

I’m trying to become more computer literate. Based on this image, does this mean that my Mac is really only using a bit over 3gb of RAM?

From what I have learned, cached files are “cached” for easier/faster access, and don’t really have any effect on the machines performance.. right?

Would love for you all to explain all this further for me in simple terms.

I appreciate you!

Screen marks after 2 months

Is this even possible. Have a MacBook Pro since January. Use it a little as my work has nothing to do with computers. So it’s always at a desk or only to a sleeve to carry it between places. I always clean the keyboard and use it carefully. This week I noticed this… the space key is above of the rest and already did this. Can I report to apple?

Even apple employers couldn’t help me about Neo

I went to the Apple Store recently to check out my options, and I’m still torn. I’m deciding between a cheaper MacBook (Neo, 8GB RAM) and a MacBook Air (16GB RAM).

Here’s my situation:

•	I use my (windows at the moment) laptop every single day (for work no music)

•	Mostly for: browsing, email, Google Chrome, general work

•	Music production: FL Studio with plugins like Nexus and Serum

•	I also want to try Logic Pro, but I probably won’t use it 24/7—more for experimenting

•	I have 2 external monitors I’d like to use

•	My projects are not huge (no 20+ track songs), but I want things to run smoothly

At the Apple Store:

•	One person told me the Neo would be fine, that it can handle my use case

•	Another person said the Neo is risky, might hang or get slow with plugins and multitasking

I’ve looked at forums and there’s a lot of conflicting advice.

What would you do?

MacBook Air 2015 -> MacBook Air M1

I recently made the upgrade (long overdue) and bought myself a brand new M1 Air 8GB RAM/256GB SSD for $485 which is cheaper in my country than a base Neo that goes for $685.

The early 2015 air has served me well during college years for office apps, light coding and simulation. Now I will be using the M1 for basically YT, browsing and watching movies.

Already miss MagSafe and the extra ports, especially USB-A, and the far superior launch pad :( but the performance difference makes up for it big time!

(Bonus pics for nostalgia)

Tingling while charging

This was happening when I first got my Macbook and I read that using the three prong extension cable from Apple fixes it and it did for a week. Last night I was using my Macbook connected to the same socket, used it for one hour and the tingling suddenly came back. It gets worse if I put my feet on the floor.

It doesn't hurt or anything but it annoys me so much, did the power adapter break internally for this to happen? The macbook charges just fine with it, but I genuinely can't understand why it didn't do it for a week and now it suddenly came back even with the three prong plug.

From a Windows user to the Mac users

To all the MacBook users here, this is out of curiosity, and I come here in peace.

What is it about MacOS and MacBooks in general that you feel like a Windows PC simply cannot do for you (for example, great speakers, large touchpad, etc)?
And on a completely different topic, what are your opinions on the MacBook Neo for a middle-schooler who will only be using it for learning, watching online educational videos and the occasional Minecraft? Asking for a friend's family member. They don't use any other Apple products.

[CAD] Is this 16" M4 Pro (24GB RAM) for $2,850 a good deal? [Upgrading from a 14" M2 Pro]

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on whether or not this is worth it. I work in graphic design and my current setup struggles sometimes performance wise.

My Current Setup: 14" MacBook Pro (M2 Pro), 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (refurbished from apple)

One pictured above: 16" MacBook Pro (M4 Pro), 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD

Found it on clearance at Staples for $2,849.97 CAD (Regular $3,299.99).

I’m looking to upgrade but I honestly don’t know much about computers, so any advice as to what would be the next best step from my current setup would be greatly appreciated :)

Safari keeps glitching

This probably is the most stupidest question ever.

Just got back from a trip, Mac book was working fine.

Now I’m home, my google chrome won’t open, and my safari page keeps glitching. So no page will actually stay.

I’ve tried everything. Literally.

What do I do?

¿Me espero al Back to School o compro ya una MacBook Neo? (no quiero cagarla 🫪)

MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for Logic Pro?

Hi everyone,

I'm finally going to buy a MacBook. I'm trying to decide between the Air and the Pro.

It will mainly be for everyday tasks (browsing, Netflix, word processing, and creating teaching materials). I also want to use it for Logic Pro, and I'm wondering if the fanless MacBook Air is sufficient? I don't want it constantly running at high temperatures. Gaming is very rare, and when I do, it's usually just Diablo 3🤟🤟

What would you recommend?
