What’s being built in the B and N parking lot? It looks like two new small stores going up?
Smells in La Crosse
Dumb question but I’ve been wondering for a while. So obviously the brewery/water treatment center makes some interesting odors closer to downtown, but I’ve noticed a distinct smell when crossing the bridge over the train tracks on Rose street. Grew up in an area without any trains, is that sort of burning rubber/metallic smell from the trains? Or is that something else?
New Construction in front of Barnes and Noble
It looks like there is a new restaurant foundation being laid in front of the Valley View mall Barnes and Noble. It appears it’ll be another starbucks? Do we really need another fn starbucks in front of a store that has a starbucks cafe, a grocery store with a starbucks in it, another starbucks location in the strip mall across from the Target that has a starbucks inside? Why can’t we get something new?
Winona Pridefest
Pridefest is coming up! I thought the location last year was decent, but having it at Unity Park makes sense. There's definitely more room there. And there's a surprisingly decent lineup of performers this year.

Contractor Not Working Out
We have a property that we purchased in 2023. We intended to do a quick flip, but we have hit major snags with high price tags throughout the process.
We finally are ready to finish the project and our contractor is not following through.
We were fined by the city for debris he didn't pick up after the demo and he didnt pay it, we did.
We have been calling to which we get a text saying he will call back and he never does. We text and no response.
We purchased all the lumber for reframing. We were told (for the hundredth time it seems) how fast it would be done; we were priority. When my husband stopped out last weekend, literally NOTHING was done. Not a single thing.
I will say we haven't pushed hard. Loss of drive and lack of motivation from the big financial hits has made it hard to deal with this property mentally. I did explain to my husband that the issue is on both parties, at first - one (the contractor) isn't following through but also the other (us) isn't setting deadlines.
Now the deadlines are trying to be set and we are getting nothing in return.
We are tens of thousands of dollars in debt. The level of stress this is causing us, and the intense stress I am dealing with with this added on to everything else life throws our way, is too much. I am over it. We need a new contractor. Now.
I looked up how to change contractors. We have no contract in place; nothing was signed. From what I understand, we just need an invoice for work and final payment. Then we can move on.
The permit is under him, so that would need to change.
Any good, affordable, and efficient contractors in the area that are good communicators, self-motivated, and have good reputations?
TIA
Rattlesnake protocol in the Hixon forest?
I was hiking in the hixon forest recently and loved it. However, I was wondering how often and what would even be the protocol if one gets bitten by a rattlesnake while 2-ish miles from the trailhead. Because I missed stepping on one by 4 feet, while being 2-ish miles from the trailhead.
Having searched for Cordells in this subreddit, I saw some posts from people that absolutely hate the car shop and I kinda wanna get it compiled into this thread. Good things to say about them, bad things to say about them. Have you done comparison shopping with the quotes they gave you and how did that go for you? Where have you taken your vehicle where you had a better experience?
Not really intending to be a hate thread, just an opinion one.

Home maintenance experts
Anyone have experience with them for work on houses?
I understand KT can sell gas for whatever they want as long as they follow minimum markups but it’s unfortunate they maintain their additional $.10/gallon profit at their stations in La Crosse when prices are so high because of the war. They’ve successfully ran 99% of their competition out of their hometown and can’t give us a break while we face ever increasing prices across the board.
