Some Interesting history in North Hobart

I was walking in north Hobart and saw the attached plaque for a Chinese laundry that used to exist in North Hobart, owned by a Wah Shing. I thought this has to be someone taking the piss and being racist. But no, there's a old 1940s newspaper snippet about Wah Shing being robbed at their North Hobart laundry. A funny case of nomanative determinism.

Anyways, thought that was fun and wanted to share for those that haven't seen it. I hope Wah Shing got justice for being robbed.

Shit restaurants related to immigration visas

Just venting. Had a shit meal tonight at Big Wong on Elizabeth St. Definitely not as good as the last time I ate there a couple years back. One of my work colleagues is from China and told me so many of the Asian restaurants are just run for two years after being bought by people for the business visa pathway (it's a path to permanent migration). So probably not even run by chefs. I'd be fine with this if the food was great but all we're ending up with are ghost businesses killing the inner city. Look at what happened to SWEET ENVY bakery.
Hey, I'm of Asian heritage so it's not racist, I know shit food when I eat it. Taste of Malaysia is GREAT and a rare gem. So not talking about all Asian restaurants, just the shit ones that are obviously run for migration purposes. Vent!

Breaking lease; real estate have said I'm responsible for continuing to pay for the power until a new tenant is found as there is a septic tank on the property

I've had to break my lease recently and the real estate are saying that it's my responsibility to keep the power on until a new tenant is found. They've gone back and forth between saying that it's due to the septic tank needing to have constant power, and simply saying that it's because they need to be able to show potential tenants through.

They've referred to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997, saying that it states that "if a tenant breaks a lease they are responsible for maintaining the utilities and paying rent until a new tenant is found, leaving the power on so that a new tenant can be shown through", but I can't find any information like that in the act.

I understand that I need to keep paying rent but am not sure about the electricity. Any advice?

Teen drivers in Hobart

So, I was standing by the bus stop with my wife when a car load of teens screeched to a halt in the middle of the road. One kid stuck his head out the window and yelled "Bus Wan*er". Then he ducked back in and squeaked at the driver to "Drive drive drive".

Seriously, with petrol prices what they are, these kids need a better hobby.

For people who moved to Tasmania from the mainland recently, how’s the fresh start been going?

I’ve been thinking about moving to Hobart myself, so I wanted to hear how people are finding it once the excitement of the move settles down a bit. Has it been worth it overall with work, lifestyle, meeting people, cost of living, and day-to-day life?

Did anyone notice RHH cleaners no longer exist?

I've had a stay in the RHH and, all credit to every nurse in here they are magnificent workers who have saved my life before, (as well as their ace doctors and surgeons, of course). May God bless them all.

But, during this stay I thought it odd, 48 hrs on ward and no early morning cleaning crew comes and goes, as 15 years ago was like clockwork every morning after breakfast?

Patient next to me was moved out tonight and in came a cleaner who I began ear bashing.

No, she said. I am not a cleaner. I am a nurse. We do all the cleaning now. Even vomit and poo on the regular.

Why are they forced to do this?

The Mockery never reported it and nurses won't strike, because their job commitment to you and I will not permit it.

Another shameful Tasmanian Liberals job description alteration. I'll bet Rockliff and company all have private cleaners.

Where to buy PC components locally?

With MSY now online only, my googling failed to find another bricks and mortar store around Hobart that keeps PC components.

I know margins are tight, prices are volatile and holding stock comes at a cost but surely Hobart has enough nerds to support a parts vendor?

What’s your reaction if you walked out your door or roller door and seen this?

I drive a similar truck that is 12m long and I’m trying to be a better person when making a delivery to suburban renovations. Not my house, not the builder, just a driver for a supply company.

After discussing in another group, my actions in order will be as follows.

  1. If at all possible don’t block any driveway or street access
  2. If there is no answer, leave the sign in their driveway, set up and start delivering.
  3. Be prepared to move the truck once made safe, to allow neighbour to exit before continuing to unload.

If I have attempted to knock but you haven’t heard me, would the sign allow you to calmly walk over as it explains, I’m willing to move.

Is there something else I can do to diffuse a situation before it starts?

Edit : thanks all for your thoughtful comments. The actions will be implemented by me. If you see my sign in your Greater Hobart area driveway it’s me. Thanks for your understanding. I’ll get you moving as soon as I can. If it’s not me, call the driver over and ask him nicely if he can make the truck safe to move and let you out. If you see a builder next door, introduce yourself and see if there might be complications for your parking situation. If they are likely, building a rapport may help you or he may suggest moving your car from the driveway before 7am while deliveries are expected. They’re not the enemy.

See you on the roads of Hobart. 👍

Hey everyone,

My partner and I are at our wits' end with the Hobart rental market. We’ve been searching for nearly two months now and every single application comes back rejected.

The Stats:

Income: $7,000+ combined monthly (both working).

Reliability: Stable employment (IT and Hospitality).

The "Offer": We’ve been telling agents we are happy to pay 10 weeks' rent in advance just to get a foot in the door.

We aren't looking for a mansion—just a standard place to live. We have references, we show up to every inspection, and we apply within an hour of the viewing.

Is there a "shadow market" we’re missing? Are there specific agencies that are better to deal with, or is Hobart just actually impossible right now? If anyone has advice on how to make an application stand out (or knows of a lead), we’d appreciate it more than you know.

Cheers.

Edit: monthly income is $7000 and closer to $9000 with side hustles

Moving to Tas (maybe)

Hi all,

Im applying for a job in Tas that I think I might get. Im still studying, and so is my partner, but the job pays well and it would be beneficial for my career after I graduate.

I was wondering how the rental market is down there, and what some good suburbs to look at are? The job is in Hobart so looking for some suburbs that have accessible public transport into the city and are otherwise nice but not too expensive :)

Im currently in Brisbane and it took me several months to find my current rental, so concerned how long it might take to find a place in Tassie, especially not being able to view them.

Also, my partner is studying secondary education and currently works as a teacher aid & OSHC supervisor. Are jobs like that in high demand/easy to come by?

Otherwise I used to have family down there and its such a beautiful place so very excited to take this next step :)

Need recommendations for Subaru Expert

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding my Subaru (around 127k km). Recently I started getting multiple warning lights/messages including:

- Check Engine Light

- Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) warning

- Hill Assist warning

The car still drives completely fine with no major noticeable issues.

Previously, when scanned, it showed “System Too Lean”. The MAF sensor appears normal, but the O2 sensor graph seems irregular/erratic.

I’m trying to understand whether anyone in Hobart/Tas has experienced similar Subaru issues before. Some people suggested:

- O2 sensor

- ECU

I’d also really appreciate recommendations for:

- honest Subaru mechanics in Hobart

- reasonably priced diagnostic places

- auto electricians familiar with Subaru sensor issues

Trying to avoid getting overcharged or replacing unnecessary parts as I’m currently on a budget.

Thanks a lot everyone

Update: O2 sensor replaced and it is showing the issue has been solved.
