1:30am wake time. How to train him to wake earlier so we can bond?
Hi 👋🏼 We're first time hamster owners and our family is desperate for some wisdom on our little Syrian hamster, Mochi, please! We're based in the UK and Mochi came from an ethical breeder. He's now 3 months old and his enclosure is a kitted out Bucatstate 3.0 120cm with 12.6" wheel, multiple sprays, hides, substrates, the best quality food and 10" of Bucatstate paper bedding. We put I'm a lot of research and love to preparing for him.
The issue is this: Mochi wakes at around 1:30am and then goes underground around 2-3 hours later. Other than that, he doesn't come above ground to say hello. I don't think he's an actual ghost ham, just not settled yet—or maybe I've not done the right things and have created an issue?
He has lived with us for 6 weeks now, he was about 8 weeks old when he arrived. His breeder handled him daily and was very affectionate with him. For the first 5 weeks we woke every night (when our hamster-cam alerted us that he'd woken) and tried training him by treat bombing with the best goodies. He was friendly and sweet but we haven't been able to shift his waking time at all. And I'm fairly sure we haven't been using the right approach because nothing has worked. I have tried feeding him at 8pm every night for a while now and he still doesn't come out when it's feeding to me. I was told it's so easy to train them... BUT HOW DO I DO THAT? He is such a gentle soul and so sweet when we do interact. He's never bitten anyone and was cuddled and kissed by his breeder so he was used to human interaction. His personality is gentle, shy, cautious. Though maybe he just needs time to build confidence?
I just don't know how to move forward with him from here in taming and getting to spend time together... We love this little sweet potato. Can you please recommend things we can at least try to help him want to hang out with us? What are your best tips? How do we get him eager to pop out and say hello when he hears us, the way yours do? He won't come up to say hi at all yet.
Thanks so much for your help in advance!
