Returned to Florence after 50 years!

I did my junior year abroad in Florence 50 years ago and after that year, I made a Wwww on the train as it pulled out of Florence that I would return again one day before I left this world. I kept my promise to myself and finally returned I feel so fulfilled. I closed the circle. I got to see the beautiful Duomo and Botticelli Primavera engages down the Arno and wonder aimlessly through the streets for weeks oh and of course, overindulged in all the goodies and to top it all off I designed a tattoo and got a tattoo there my very first one it’s a floor delay with a rose at the top, which has a special significance for me. My advice is don’t wait 50 years to return to the place you love if you can help it.⚜️🩵⚜️🩵⚜️🩵⚜️

One Day in Florence and would like some advice

I’ll have one full day in Florence with my wife and parents, and I’d like to make the most of it. I understand that the Florence Cathedral (Duomo) is a must-see, but since my father has a heart condition, I think it’s best to avoid the climb. We’ll definitely admire it from the outside instead.

I’m considering starting the day after breakfast with a visit to the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David. What’s the best way to purchase tickets, and how much time should we plan to fully experience it?

In the afternoon, we’ll likely have time for one more major attraction, and I was thinking about the Uffizi Gallery. I’d appreciate the same advice—what’s the best way to get tickets, and how long should we plan to spend there?

I’m also open to any suggestions you might have if there are better options or alternatives to what I’ve outlined.

Piazzale Michelangelo Picnic Today

Piazzale Michelangelo...planning to do sunset today. Curious what the best strategy would be to have a picnic of some sort?

Bring your own wine and maybe go to a supermarket?

Or do they sell wine/beer/drinks and food up there?

Or is that frowned upon?

Thanks

Anyone know what all this military activity that’s been going on since yesterday is about?

Yesterday there were fighter jets buzzing in the air, breaching the sound barrier and now we have helicopters flying around.

Need advice, pre-purchase tickets?

We are going to Florence in mid May. I want to see the Duomo museum and the Vecchio palace. Do we need pre-purchase tickets, or can we buy them same day.

Thanks.

Brunelleschi Pass

I am visiting Florence for a few days in May and it looks like the Brunelleschi Passes are sold out. Is there any other way to see the Duomo or have I missed the opportunity?

Staying outside Florence

Hello, I will be visiting Florence soon. The only accommodation I found within my budget is quite far from the city. I was wondering how the bus system is in Florence and whether staying there is a good idea or not. To access the city center, I need to use the bus (8km)

Unfortunately, it’s too late to change, as everything has already been booked.

Food recommendations without beef and pork

My wife and I are traveling to Florence for 5 days at the end of May. I’ve been doing some research and I am excited about steak Florentine, tortellini en brodo, lampredotto, and other Tuscan and Florentine foods.

However, my wife doesn’t eat pork or beef. She loves seafood and chicken, so my question is, are most restaurants going to have options for her that are non vegetarian? Most restaurants seem to an option or two, but chicken especially sees to be on less menus.

Any favorite wine windows in Florence?

I know there are quite a few, but I’d rather find a couple of good ones than try to see them all.

Would love to hear your favourites.

Can't decide on a steakhouse -- Buca Lapi, I'Tuscani, Dall'Oste, Bisteccheria Santa Croce, other... Help choosing?

Never been to Italy, but we are visiting Florence soon and hoping for a great authentic steak night dinner. Currently feeling stuck on the options and hoping locals or those experienced can help me out. I am trying to balance two factors:

  1. Our group really appreciates quality in technique and is not easily pleased with steak - in my experience it's been hard to find a place that really nails it, even among high end steakhouses. So craftsmanship that is near the top of the distribution curve is important.

  2. Simultaneously, we are also here for more than just "steak" - the night is an experience to be in Florence, to feel the authenticity of Tuscany, and have a great environment to spend several hours in.

I am not sure exactly where to draw that line and I'm finding myself unable to decide. It is hard to sort out from such diverse online reviews, especially when things change with time (a 5-7 year old review may not represent the current quality or tone of a place today).

Anything clearly stand out here (or anything to avoid)? Any guidance is most appreciated!

Pisa & Florence airports seeing delays due to new EU border system (EES)

If you’re flying in or out of Europe right now, in Tuacany especially from Pisa or Florence, it’s worth planning extra time at the airport.

Since 10–11 April, the EU has started rolling out the new Entry/Exit System (EES) across Schengen. It replaces passport stamps for non-EU travellers with a digital system that collects biometric data (fingerprints + facial image) and logs entries/exits in a central database.

In theory it should make things smoother long-term, but right now it’s causing delays—mainly for first-time users.

What’s happening in practice:

- First registration can take 2–5 minutes per passenger

- Staff often need to guide people through the process

- When multiple non-Schengen flights land at once (especially in Pisa), queues build up quickly

There have already been reports across Italy of long lines and even missed flights in these first days.

What to expect locally:

- Pisa Airport: longer queues for non-Schengen arrivals/departures

- Florence Airport: fewer long-haul flights, but still possible delays at peak times

Biggest slowdowns affect first-time users of the system.

Tips if you’re travelling:

Get to the airport earlier than usual

Expect longer passport control times

Follow signs for biometric registration points.

Curious if anyone here has already gone through EES in Pisa or Florence, how bad were the queues?

recommendations on where to stay in italy - small quiet village?

My partner and I (20 years old) are heading to Europe in June/July. Due to plans changing, we now have 4 nights free in Italy. We are landing in Rome (2 nights), then we have the free 4 nights. Afterwards, we are heading to Florence (3 nights), which was going to include a day trip to Siena and San Gimignano, Cinque Terre (3 nights) before moving onto Switzerland. It is my partners 21st birthday during these free dates so would be great to be in a nice spot!

For reference the remainder of our trip includes:

- Interlaken (4), Amsterdam (4), Paris (3), Nice (4) and then Prague (4).

So, my question is where should we spend those 4 nights?? I was thinking instead of the day trip to Siena, we could just stay there instead? Or, a quiet Italian town would be perfect.

Also open to switching the other places around if there is somewhere else highly recommended.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
