Deinfluence me please!

I am dying to paint my kitchen cabinets.

First off, I live with my husband and toddler, but they DGAF about home design and decor so they don’t get a say.

We are planning a major renovation on the main levels of our house, but that is probably five years out. We have been living in this house for five years, and I think I’m reaching my breaking point with the kitchen and don’t know if I can make it another five years. I spend so much time in the kitchen and it is such a demoralizing space.

It is the ugliest and least functional kitchen known to women. The cabinets are original to the house which was built in the 60s, but they are homemade plywood with dark stain and are finished with shellac. They are shiny, but in the worst way. They are impossible to clean, and the shellac is wearing off in some places and gummy in others.

Now, I love wood. But this house is lousy with it and it’s all orange-toned. We have pine floors and pine panelling on the walls and all of it is orange shellac. I have a lot of experience with DIY renovations and painting furniture so I know painting the kitchen cabinets will be a massive pain in the ass but they can’t get any *worse* right? Right??

Am I setting myself up for failure? I know this is a lipstick on a pig situation so I guess I’m just looking for a gut check. So Deinfluence me! Or influence me I guess. Should I paint the cabinets y/n?

How to make this tiny bathroom a little nicer

I recently started renting my first apartment and my landlord is giving me some freedom with painting. The bathroom is the last thing I have to tackle (There is no ventilation so I’m picking up a dehumidifier) I’m not sure what direction to go. Since taking this pic I’ve added just a basic clear shower curtain and temporary floor mats. I’m not sure if you can tell in these pictures but the tile above the sink is a bit uneven, I feel like it stands out and would like something to distract my eyes from it. There’s a good bit of damage around the wood near the shower(plumbing chase?) I’d appreciate any suggestions!!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻

What do you think of this coffee table?

I stumbled across this set at a showroom a few weeks ago and I can't stop thinking about it. It's two pieces, one taller and one lower, and the way they sit together has this layered effect I find really appealing. The surface caught my eye too. It's not really a pattern, more like the wood tones come together naturally in a way that has a lot of depth to it.

My living room is pretty small and my boyfriend thinks one table is enough. Would this be too much in a compact space?

has anyone tried these cheaper couches from amazon?

Hello!!! Need help getting a couch for my new space. It needs to be not too big, comfortable enough, and easy to assemble/move (since i live alone on the top floor!). So i’m thinking of getting a couch on amazon since it can be shipped to me in boxes (under 200$ 💔). I’ve been looking at these, has anyone had any experience getting similar couches on amazon? I want to make sure if I get once it’s at least comfortable enough to use.

shades or no shades?

The mix of prisms on the fixture and beads on the shades might be too much, so asking for opinions. I like the way the shades soften the light, but they're only 7.5 watts, so not too glaring. If this isn't your style, you probably don't like either one 😊, I've always been a little over the top.

What’s the one thing that makes a room stop feeling temporary to you?

Not “finished” exactly, just that moment when it finally starts feeling lived-in and settled instead of like you’re still passing through it.

I always notice it’s rarely about adding a lot more. Usually it’s one softer detail, one object with some presence, or one corner finally coming together.

Curious what that shift usually is for other people.

Small play room/dining room. How would you lay this out?

10 ft wide room pulling double duty as our only dining area + toddler play space and currently failing at both 🙃

Biggest needs:

- more open floor space for play (this is the priority)

- real storage for adult stuff (not just toy bins)

- still need a small, functional dining setup

We’re open to swapping basically everything: furniture, layout, etc. The rug especially needs to go (too thin for play), so assume that changes too.

Constraints:

- window on the back wall

- no full banquette/half wall

- narrow width makes most standard layouts feel tight

Ideas we’ve toyed with:

- smaller table shifted forward/left (not centered)

- storage flanking the window

- keeping the center/back more open for play

Also open to doing something visually distinct (like wallpaper). Since it’s a small house and you can see from one end of the house to the other, this space could handle having its own identity.

Would love:

- layout ideas that actually work in a tight footprint

- specific sizing (table, storage depth, etc.)

- visuals/mockups/floor plans if possible — I have a hard time picturing layouts from text alone

Photos + floor plan attached! Ignore the piles of clutter from moving things around (and aforementioned toddler).
